Plot summary
In a launch pod en route to the Halcyon Starcuiser, Tholothian girl Cimina asks her grandfather Shorr Komrrin if they’re there yet, but he threatens to take the next shuttle back to the surface if she keeps that up. Two other members on board converse, and a woman can’t believe that she’s being taken on a cruise through the Mid Rim by a man just after the First Order bombed Tah’Nuhna in this quadrant. After the pod reaches the Halcyon, they are all greeted by a droid named D3-O9 who is the logistic droid for the ship, and was sent personally by Cruise Director Lenka Mok. Once taken aboard, Cimina asks the droid to see the lightsaber training pod, but when her grandfather Shorr thinks otherwise, D3-O9 recalls that Shorr has already had quite the adventure on the Halcyon. Briefly flashing back, a young Shorr is with Republic Senator Padmé Amidala as they watch Anakin Skywalker and Asajj Ventress fight aboard the Halcyon. In the present, an alarm suddenly sounds, and the ship’s captain, Keevan, is informed of a large ship exiting hyperspace right in their path. After learning that it is a pirate vessel, they are contacted by pirate captain Crimson Jack, who explains that he’s intercepted a transmission from the Resistance to someone on board, and the First Order would pay him for the information, so he warns Keevan that if the spy isn’t turned over, the ship won’t be around to make its historic 275th anniversary run next month. Cimina becomes afraid, but D3-O9 reassures her that they’ll be fine as the Halcyon has faced far worse over its two-and-three quarter centuries. Recalling one of these events, Cimina is asked if she’s ever heard of the ancient warriors known as the Jedi.
Flashing back 265 years, Jedi Knight Nib Assek and her Padawan Wookiee Burryaga Agaburry meditate aboard the Halcyon, and the latter is haunted by memories of the Great Hyperspace Disaster, so his master instructs him to learn to control his emotions so that they don’t control him, as his ability to feel others’ emotions through the Force causes him to feel their pain with intensity. When Burryaga questions their purpose aboard the Halcyon, Nib reasons that the Force has placed them where they need to be, and the Halcyon may be a tempting target for the Nihil. Just then, they are interrupted by D3-O9 who summons them to the bridge, and they meet with the Anzellan engineer Shug Drabor. The captain, Kel Dor Gol Ponk, informs the bridge that they’re getting readings from several ships on the other side of a nearby moon, but he believes that it’s a glitch as there aren’t any mapped hyperspace routes there. When Nib confirms with Ponk that the ships seemingly just appeared, she assures him that the readings must mean the Nihil are here. While the Halcyon attempts to take evasive action, Zeetar, a Talpini Tempest Runner for the Nihil, rallies his men and explains that the Halcyon is carrying a lot of important passengers and information that they will seize. After the Halcyon’s thrusters are taken out, Nib realizes that the rest of the ship is being left unharmed, meaning that the Nihil are after something onboard and so she comes to the conclusion that it is the ship’s hyperspace compass as the gem at its center is invaluable. Ponk wants the Jedi to send a distress call to Starlight Beacon, but with communications being jammed, Nib and Burryaga have to resort to reaching out through the Force in order to let the Jedi on Starlight Beacon feel their distress.
When the Nihil led by Zeetar in his mechanized suit breach the ship, Nib instructs Burryaga to pilot his Vector in order to keep the other fighters off of the ship while she goes to welcome the uninvited guests. Zeetar and his forces gas the Halcyon guards, and once they send a Thisspiasian through the vents to the bridge, Nib Assek arrives and vows to not let them all pass as the passengers and crew aboard the ship are under her protection. As she engages Zeetar, Halcyon forces from the bridge are motivated by Shug Drabor who convinces them to defend their ship, and they come to the aid of the Jedi and save her life before working together with her to hold the Nihil attackers back. Meanwhile, outside in space, Burryaga battles with Nihil starfighters and puts up a good fight, but soon finds himself overwhelmed by their sheer numbers. However, help arrives in the form of Jedi led by Stellan Gios who heard Burryaga’s pleas for help, and together they drive back the Nihil ships. Elsewhere aboard the bridge of the Halcyon, the Thisspiasian Nihil emerges from the vents and secures the codes for the Chandrilla Charter Company Shipyards, but after he transmits them to Zeetar, he is thanked for his service and isn’t given the chance to escape, as Zeetar kills him due to not being able to risk the Thisspiasian’s capture. Having acquired what he came for, Zeetar uses the cannons on his suit to blow a hole in the hull of the Halcyon, allowing him to escape and flee aboard a Nihil ship. The hole wreaks havoc as multiple Halcyon members are sucked out into the vacuum of space, but Nib Assek is able to use the Force to block the hole before Gol Ponk can join them.
With the threat of the Nihil gone, the Jedi help the Halcyon and its passengers recover, and in the present, D3-O9 tells Cimina that no one had ever questioned one dead Nihil on the bridge as they all thought that he was a victim of a Halcyon security officer. When D3-O9 questions how they were to know what was to come, she brushes this off as it’s not a part of the story, and continues on to say that Shug Drabor was grateful to the Jedi for saving his ship and compass, so he built a lightsaber training pod onboard as a token of appreciation. D3-O9 promises to take Cimina to this pod, assuming that they survive the current pirate attack. Meanwhile, pirate Crimson Jack becomes annoyed that the Halcyon is taking too long to respond, and to prove that he isn’t bluffing, he has his ship open fire on the starcruiser.
