- "It was never easy to tell what the Empire would care about in any given situation, just that breaking a local law would not necessarily see someone doing a long stint on Garen IV or similar prison worlds."
- ―Beaumont Kin, The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire
Garen IV was a terrestrial prison world[2] in the Garen system in the Thuldin's Grant sector of the Expansion Region, in grid square J-15 of the Standard Galactic Grid,[1] that operated during the Imperial[2] and New Republic Eras. The convicted Gamorrean criminal Chargutt Lo served a 15-year sentence on Garen IV for aggravated assault. The sentence was listed on Lo's profile, which was among a number of profiles seen by Marshal Carasynthia Dune when she searched for that of the criminal Migs Mayfeld[3] around 9 ABY.[4]
Behind the scenes
Garen IV was mentioned on a screen in "Chapter 14: The Tragedy" of Jon Favreau's Disney+ series Star Wars: The Mandalorian, directed by Robert Rodriguez[3] and released on December 4, 2020.[5] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the planet Garen IV was first mentioned in the short story "Firepower," written by Carolyn Golledge, which was published in Star Wars Adventure Journal 8 in November 1995.[6]

SWCC 2019: 9 Things We Learned from The Mandalorian Panel on StarWars.com (backup link) establishes that Star Wars: The Mandalorian is set about five years after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, which Star Wars: Galactic Atlas dates to 4 ABY. Therefore, the events of "Chapter 14: The Tragedy," including the mention of Garen IV, must have taken place around 9 ABY.
