"Firepower" is a short story written by Carolyn Golledge (with illustrations by Doug Shuler) that was originally published in Star Wars Adventure Journal 8 by West End Games in November 1995. It was later made available online at Hyperspace on May 12, 2006.
Plot summary
After suffering repeated starfighter losses while raiding Imperial convoys, X-Wing squadron leader Stevan Makintay proposes recruiting sympathetic manufacturing experts as a way to alleviate Rebel Alliance supply shortages. He undertakes a solo recruitment mission to his homeworld, Hargeeva, a planet he fled as a noble in exile. His embittered betrothed, the metallurgist Ketrian Altronel, is at first resistant to his invitation, but when she witnesses the cruelty of the Empire firsthand, she has a change of heart. She and Mak are captured by the Empire and shuttled to Coruscant for interrogation. En route, their transport is waylaid by pirates, allowing Mak and Ketrian to avoid Imperial imprisonment and rejoin the Rebellion. Ketrain brings with her a breakthrough alloy that can increase the firepower of the Rebel X-Wings – but her veins carry a toxin injected by a nefarious Imperial, Nial Pedrin, who wants her dead before she can help the Rebellion.
