The result of the debate was No consensus for Vote 1; Support Vote 2.
Hi, so per the titling of this, two things. The second thing is only tangentially tied but also no point in having two CTs and thus having unnecessary votes.
- Whether or not to rename TC
- Tagging template capitalization
Contents
1: Trash compactor naming
As first proposed on the Senate Hall and later commented further on the Consensus track, if this passes, this would rename {{Tc}} to {{VC}} and Forum:Trash compactor to [[Forum:Vote of No Confidence]].
- Some assorted arguments for keeping it include that Trash compactor is used canonically, and it's been ingrained in the site for a long time so it may be confusing to swap, among other things.
- Some assorted arguments for moving include that we recently voted to change the tagging template's quote to "I move for a vote of no confidence […]"—so this change would match the quote, and also because calling new folks' articles and/or an irl person's article, if non-notable, inherently trash, isn't always great, and then additionally that the TC is often used for not just deletions of bad articles, but also for restoring, redirecting, and merging.

- While I think the "Trash compactor" name itself isn't really rude, even though I agree with all the changes to the template, a rename does better reflect how the forum is actually used in the present and still retains a clear SW movie reference. Master Fredcerique

Oppose rename
- TC is a widely recognized Star Wars concept and I think it's just about the perfect SW name for a deletion process. VC doesn't sound nearly as natural. And TC is deeply ingrained in Wookieepedia lingo. 1358 (Talk) 23:15, 23 May 2024 (UTC)

- The SH/CT comments specified that it'd be preferred to use VC; went with the comments from the last vote.—spookywillowwtalk 23:27, 23 May 2024 (UTC)
- I think honestly any reasonable real-world person whose article was up for deletion would recognise that Trash Compactor is just the name for our deletion forum derived from what, as Ecks points out, is a well known Star Wars concept. Fan26 (Talk) 23:31, 23 May 2024 (UTC)
- I personally prefer TC, and think that it's a more useful name for starting editors. Comparing to other forums, Senate Hall and Consensus Track literally describe what the they are about (a senate-esque discussion and tracking consensus). Since Trash Compactor is generally (not always) used for deleting articles, it makes sense to use a name that represents that, metaphorically "trash compacting" the articles, while also using fun Star Wars lingo. "Vote of no confidence" just sounds like a generic vote and might be confusing for new editors when we also have a consensus track, whereas the name "trash compactor" has a logical connection to its purpose. In-universe, a vote of no confidence literally means voting to remove a Chancellor due to lack of confidence, so I don't really see the correlation to deleting/restoring articles (if anything the name fits something like the RFRUR). Anyways this is getting long but I hope this explains my reasoning to keep the name. Also per Fan. Rsand 30 (talk) 23:32, 23 May 2024 (UTC)

- The procedure's current name makes it abundantly clear what the effect of the procedure might be. Making this less clear does not make Wookieepedia a more "welcoming place for new people." Asithol (talk) 16:57, 24 May 2024 (UTC)

- Ever deleted a file on your computer? It goes to the trash folder. The term makes sense even without the in-universe context because it's used by every computer in the world. Whenever I delete a Discussions post on this very site, I click on a little icon of a trash can. There are plenty of ways to more constructively word our deletion procedures, but "trash" is wholly neutral in this context. Throwing away (even this is a trash can metaphor) the universal terminology for deleting things and instead creating less accurate language unique to this site would in fact come across as less welcoming and possibly disingenuous to new users. - Was pondering on the more formal nature of the term 'Vote of No Confidence', however I do not agree honestly. Anyone whom edits this encyclopaedia is aware that removed articles are deleted outright, not merely ousted, as the former phrase connotes, but erased. The term 'trash compactor' is concise and conveys this purpose/outcome whilst being among the clearest Star Wars references around. In contrast, the former term is less of a clear reference. Per Sarith's reasoning, in this context the concern of it being a pejorative is nullified - it is good conduct to cordially notify the creator of an article which is in TC, that it has been flagged for removal. 2: Capitalization
Per Imp's suggestion recently, shoehorning one smaller thing into this vote. If support, capitalize {{Iv}} and {{Tc}} templates to {{IV}} and {{TC}}. If vote 1 passes, the above template would instead be capitalized as {{VC}} instead of shifting to TC.—spookywillowwtalk 23:10, 23 May 2024 (UTC)
