The result of the debate was support usage of Reprint, but oppose "full" parameter. Cade
Good morning friends, it's your resident cranky wizard Cade and I have descended from my tower to offer you yet more dark magic that Imp has given me the inspiration for. Behold... Module:Reprint/data and {{Reprint}}.
So, basically, we've got a ton of Insider articles and quite a few Appearances that have received reprints in other media, like short story collections or Category:The Best of Star Wars Insider, and for the longest time we've simply been listing these reprints on their own line. However, a few years back I built the reprint parameter for Cav's {{WEGCite}}, allowing us to collapse down the reprints from the Second Editions of the various Galaxy Guides so that we can simply have a single line like so:
"The Promotion of Lieutenant Veers" — The Star Wars Sourcebook (reprinted in Second Edition)
"Dodonna's Story" — Galaxy Guide 1: A New Hope (reprinted in Second Edition and The Movie Trilogy Sourcebook)
This has become standard practice for WEGCite, and I've always wanted to expand it to other templates; and now, through the magic of Lua, I have. So, the way this works is that, for a given citation template such as {{InsiderCite}} or {{StoryCite}}, in the Appearances/Sources listing, you simply provide |reprint=1 as a parameter and bam, it will generate text listing the reprints of that story/article, just like how the audiobook parameter is a built-in version of {{Ab}}. Here's some examples:
- "Droid Dilemma" — Star Wars (2015) 25 (reprinted in Droids Unplugged 1)
- "Escape from Darth Vader" — 5-Minute Star Wars Stories (and audiobook) (reprinted in 5-Minute Star Wars Villain Stories and Star Wars Galactic Stories: 7 Stories from a Galaxy Far, Far Away....)
"Heritage of the Sith" — Star Wars Insider 88 (reprinted in Star Wars: The Official Magazine 65)
"Imperial Officers Field Guide" — Star Wars Insider 96 (reprinted in Star Wars Insider Special Edition 2010)
"Keep Calm and Carrie On!" — Star Wars Insider 136 (reprinted in Star Wars Insider Special Edition 2014 and The Best of Star Wars Insider Volume 1)
And for stuff like "The Final Trap" or Domain of Evil, which don't use citation templates for their original releases but do use templates for their reprints, you will use {{Reprint|<title>}} after the wikilink, just like {{Ab}}. I've also the {{Crp}} template directly into the Reprint module and its data, so there's no need to use it if reprint is used:
- "The Final Trap" (colorized in Classic Star Wars 20)
- "The Face of Evil" (reprinted in Tales from a Galaxy Far, Far Away: Aliens: Volume I)
- Domain of Evil (reprinted in Classic Adventures: Volume Two)
Personally, I much prefer to limit the reprint-listing to a single line, as it's cleaner for both us and the reader, but I've added the option (which we will vote on) to do {{Reprint|<title>|full=1}}, which will generate each reprint listing on its own line right after the target:
- "The Final Trap"
- "The Final Trap" — Classic Star Wars 20 (colorized reprint)
- "The Face of Evil"
- "The Face of Evil" — Tales from a Galaxy Far, Far Away: Aliens: Volume I
In the future, additional reprints can just be added to Module:Reprint/data (provided you adhere to the proper syntax) and it will automatically update any usage of Reprint sitewide, just like ArchiveAccess.
So, here's the stuff we're actually voting on:
To Wookieepedia:Layout Guide/In-universe#Appearances, I'm proposing the following lines just above the narrative chronology section, though I've got votes for each line:
- Reprints of narrative works under different titles or in further collections should not be listed separately in the "Appearances" section. Instead, such reprints should be denoted with the usage of the
reprintparameter of the currently-used citation template, or the {{Reprint}} template if the narrative work does not use a citation template. (vote #1) <vote 3 text if it passes> - Comic trade paperbacks should only be listed in the "Appearances" section if it includes a colorized reprint of the original work, such as Star Wars: A Long Time Ago... Volume 1: Doomworld. In such cases, trade paperbacks should be listed chronologically based on the events of the first comic collected, and should use the {{Crp}} template. Trade paperbacks that include new non-narrative material, such as Star Wars Omnibus: X-Wing Rogue Squadron Volume 1, should be listed in the "Sources" section. Colorized reprints should also be directly cited in references, rather than using the original citation with the reprint parameter or template. (vote #2)
And to the Sources section, this line above the Star Wars Blog post line:
- Reprints of non-fiction material in additional collections should not be listed separately in the "Sources" section, but should instead be denoted with the usage of the
reprintparameter of the currently-used citation template, or the {{Reprint}} template if the work does not use a citation template. (vote #1) <vote 4 text if it passes>
And for votes 3 & 4, if they pass, we'll add this line to the end of votes 1 & 2's lines:
- The
full=1parameter should be used with the Reprint template in order to list each reprint individually on its own line.
Please Note: This will not affect Index pages, as C4-DE tracks reprints in separate Masterlist pages and will break out the reprints onto their own individual lines with release dates when generating Indexes.

- This was a lot of mind-numbing work to sift through all those Insider Special Editions and Best of issues, but I think it turned out quite nicely in the end. Cade

- This is a bit of an odd and wordy one, but it codifies a principle that Imp and I have been
fighting with C4-DEworkshopping for a while now on; the usage of {{Crp}} to denote colorized reprints, and the express permission/directive to list new non-narrative content in Sources from TPBs. I stand by the rationale that we should not list all TPBs in Appearances, as that would be unnecessary bloat and comics are (one of?) the only narrative media type we cover that natively lends itself to that kind of collection. Every comic is almost guaranteed to get a TPB, while it's very rare for virtually every other Appearance (see Wookieepedia:Appearances/Reprint for examples). CadeCalrayn 14:35, 9 November 2024 (UTC)

- I think it's much cleaner to simply list them all one on line, like the infamous "Inbrief" which has 4 additional reprints. I can see why it might be nice to split them, but for consistently and readability's sake, we should stick to the simple option. Cade

- This one is a much easier "nope" from me, because a) it looks messy and b) it messes up the chronological-by-release-date ordering of the Sources, thereby defeating the whole purpose of the reprint template/parameter. I think listing them all on a single line is more than enough. Cade

- I assume none of this will affect listing retranslated reprints? Ie Razor-class frigate listing the original German Weapon of the Jedi comic and then the English translation on a separate line. Tommy-Macaroni (he/they) 09:23, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
