- "So what is it? Do they really trust you? Or they just think you're stupid?"
"You know I don't need an excuse to hit you." - ―Cassian Andor and Crab
Crab was a human male who was a member of the Maya Pei Brigade during the Imperial Era. In 4 BBY, the brigade was ambushed and took heavy losses, leaving Crab as part of a group of fifteen survivors that became stranded on the moon Yavin 4. There, they encountered and killed the Axis network pilot Porko then captured his ally Cassian Andor when the latter arrived in a stolen TIE Avenger.
Crab held Andor while he was questioned by the group's self-proclaimed leader, Gerdis, and was then left to guard him alone while the other brigade members discussed what to do with the prisoner and starfighter. Crab merely spat when Andor suggested the pair of them escape together but eventually revealed to the prisoner that he and the other survivors were part of the brigade, whom Andor's allies had helped supply in the past. The rest of the group was unhappy to discover that Andor had learned their identity, and when Andor still refused to reveal who he worked for, Crab became furious and had to be held back.
Later that night, the brigade continued to argue about what to do and whether their leader, Maya Pei, had been killed in the ambush. Gerdis and Crab claimed that she had, but the group's pilot, Rika, claimed that Crab could not have seen Pei die, as he had been hiding in a bunker during the fight. Crab demanded she recant the claim and eventually shot her when she refused. He was then immediately shot in return by brigade member Rowd, and the creatures of Yavin 4 later claimed Crab's corpse, leaving only a severed foot for his allies to find.
Biography
Stranded survivors
Crab was a human male[2] who served as a guerrilla[3] in the rebellious Maya Pei Brigade during the reign of the Galactic Empire. In 4 BBY, the brigade was ambushed and lost six starships and forty starfighters. Crab was part of a group of sixteen survivors who escaped the ambush alive and made it to[2] the moon Yavin 4,[1] where the brother of brigade member Bardi left them stranded when he took their starship, claiming that he was going to search for other survivors. The group then encountered the Axis network pilot Porko, whom they killed when he shot at them before trying to flee from a rendezvous point where he was waiting for fellow network member Cassian Andor. Two days after the brigade survivors had arrived at the rendezvous point, Andor arrived in a stolen TIE Avenger and landed to find Porko.[2]
Crab and the Maya Pei Brigade captured Cassian Andor on Yavin 4.
Crab and the fourteen other brigade members forced Andor to surrender to them while hiding in the undergrowth with their blasters aimed at the new arrival. Crab and brigade member Rowd then threw him in the dirt before pulling him up on his knees to be questioned by Gerdis, the self-proclaimed leader of the survivors. Instead of getting answers, Gerdis ended up bickering with Bardi until the survivors' only pilot, Rika, informed the other survivors that she had found a TIE pilot helmet that proved Andor was an Imperial test pilot.[2]
Fool me once
- "I get it. Two days, no food. Makes everyone cranky, right?"
[Crab aims his blaster at Andor] "How do you know how long we've been here? Hmmm?"
"You were not here three days ago when I left." - ―Cassian Andor and Crab
Gerdis, Bardi, and Rika then entered the TIE Avenger to inspect its cockpit, and Crab accompanied them while guarding Andor. Unfamiliar with any of the controls, Rika expressed doubts about her ability to fly the ship, and the survivors began discussing if they might need Andor to fly it. Leaving Crab to guard Andor by the Avenger, the rest of the survivors moved over to a wrecked Breon HOY-39 Dayvan nearby to further discuss their options. When Andor looked back toward the starfighter, Crab warned him that he would never make it to the ship before being shot and then spat when the prisoner suggested the pair of them escape together.[2]
Crab was left to guard Cassian Andor alone and revealed to him that he was part of the Maya Pei Brigade.
Andor then asked his lone guard whether the other survivors truly trusted him or simply thought he was stupid, so Crab threatened to hit him. When Andor sympathized with how cranky he must be after two days with no food, Crab quickly aimed his blaster rifle at Andor and demanded to know how the prisoner knew the length of time they had been stranded. After Andor revealed that he had been at the rendezvous point three days prior, Crab told him that the group was part of the Maya Pei Brigade, which the Axis network member was familiar with. Crab then brought Andor over to the rest of the survivors, who were angry that he had revealed their identity to the prisoner.[2]
Shame on you
Bardi blamed the leak on Gerdis, who questioned what Crab had said, but Crab was unconcerned as Andor could already tell they were stranded. The prisoner then revealed that he knew the brigade's leader, Maya Pei, and that his allies had previously supplied her in the past. Gerdis then claimed that Pei had perished during the ambush, but Bardi disputed the claim. When Gerdis then asked Andor which rebel group he was with, he refused to tell them and chastised them for revealing their own identity. Outraged, Crab lunged at Andor and had to be held back by Bardi, Rika, and brigade member Plug.[2]
The Maya Pei Brigade argued over what to do with Cassian Andor and his TIE Avenger.
Crab, Bardi, Gerdis, and Rika then returned to the TIE Avenger cockpit and began arguing about whether they should trust Andor while Rika tried to figure out the controls. When Crab declared that she was not making any progress, Bardi snapped at him that the lack of progress was due to Crab distracting her. Rika then accidentally activated the Avenger's weaponry, firing a salvo into the nearby treeline.[2]
An eye for an eye
- "Call me a liar."
"You're not even good at that."
[Crab shoots Rika] - ―Crab and Rika's last words
That night, all fifteen survivors and the still-imprisoned Andor gathered in the middle of the rendezvous point to further debate what to do with Andor and the TIE Avenger. Bardi questioned Gerdis's leadership, and when Gerdis claimed to have always been Maya Pei's second, the brigade member Neek dismissed it as something that[2] he[3] had never heard. Crab then blamed this on the fact that Neek never listened and called him a skug. Rowd then stated that[2] he[3] wanted to hear about leadership from Pei herself, causing Gerdis and Crab to repeat the claim that she had died in the ambush. Rika then accused Crab of having hidden in a bunker during the ambush, meaning he could not have seen Pei's fate, but Crab called her a liar. Rowd backed Rika against Crab, but Gerdis told him to be quiet, and the conversation returned to the ship, although Crab persisted and demanded that Rika take back her comment.[2]
Crab killed Rika for calling him a coward and a liar, but was immediately shot in return by Rowd.
When she told him to get stuffed, he aimed his blaster rifle at her and dared her to repeat the claim and call him a liar. Gerdis tried to calm Crab, but he pushed him away, and when Rika retorted that Crab was not even a good liar, he shot her in the chest and killed her. Rowd then immediately shot and killed Crab in return, and a blasterfight broke out among the remaining survivors, who split into two groups, one following Gerdis and the other Bardi.[2]
Legacy
The creatures of Yavin 4 left only Crab's severed foot behind.
As the groups hid in cover from one another, the creatures of Yavin 4 descended upon Crab and Rika's remains, leaving only Crab's severed foot in a boot. Later that night, both groups of survivors sent out scouts to confirm that Rika and Crab had died.[2]
Among Gerdis's group, brigade member Flek decided Crab must already be dead, as they had not heard him calling out. Their scout, Snee, then found Crab's foot and cried out in horror, dropping it and firing at the opposing faction before returning to Gerdis's group and informing them of Crab's fate. Andor eventually escaped the two factions in the TIE Avenger,[4] with his experience with the Maya Pei Brigade having shown him how far the rebellion was from acting as an organized force.[5]
Personality and traits
- "You'd never make it."
"Alone? No. No way. But the two of us, we could be out of here by now."
[Crab spits] - ―Crab and Cassian Andor
Crab had to be held back by his allies to stop him from attacking Andor when the prisoner criticized him.
Crab remained loyal to his allies and refused Andor's offer to escape with him in the TIE Avenger, casually threatening him with violence when the prisoner insulted him. He did then reveal to Andor that he was with the Maya Pei Brigade but became furious enough to try and attack Andor when the prisoner later chastised him for revealing the information. When Rika claimed that he was a liar and coward and had hidden during the ambush of the brigade, Crab demanded she take it back and would not drop the matter, eventually killing her when she taunted him. Crab had light skin, brown hair, and brown eyes.[2]
Equipment
- "You can stop right there! You got 15 blasters pointed at you right now!"
- ―Gerdis warns Andor
On Yavin 4, Crab wore a brown and gray jacket with a black bandolier and a brown bandolier, black fingerless gloves, gray pants, and brown boots. He carried a blaster rifle and a blaster pistol, wearing the latter in a holster on his right hip.[2]
Behind the scenes
Dylan Corbett-Bader portrayed Crab.
Crab was portrayed by Dylan Corbett-Bader in the live-action Disney+ television series Andor, first appearing in "One Year Later" and "Sagrona Teema," the first and second episodes of the show's second season,[2] both of which aired on April 22, 2025.[6] The Yavin jungle clearing scenes involving the Maya Pei Brigade were shot at Longcross Studios.[7]
Costume designer Michael Wilkinson and concept artist Glyn Dillon worked on the costumes for the Maya Pei Brigade, treating them as threadbare survivalists who needed to contrast from the luxury refinement of costumes on Chandrila, the sophistication of costumes on Coruscant, and the agricultural workwear of Mina-Rau, all other settings on the show.[8] Crab and the other brigade members were made to appear sweaty and grubby by[9] chief textile artist[2] Jackie Moody and her breakdown team.[9]
