"The Republic classified these creatures as protected. Because on their home planet of Bartokan V, the giant Svor Clan worship them as gods and call them barat-karabak: fierce teeth. They demanded the special designation, and the pathetic whimpering sods on Coruscant complied."
―Crufeela, to Ram Jomaram, on the Bonbrak[3]

Bartokan V was a planet located in the Bartokan system of the Outer Rim's Tamarin sector that was the homeworld of the sentient Bonbrak species. The Svor Clan that lived on Bartokan V revered the Bonbraks—known to them as "barat-karabak"—as gods, and at some point requested that the Galactic Republic classify the species as a protected species, which it complied with.

In 230 BBY, the Shani singer Crufeela told Jedi Padawan Ram Jomaram about the planet. Two years later, Bartokan V became part of the Nihil marauders' Occlusion Zone region of space after the Nihil expanded its Stormwall hyperspace barrier. Later that year, the Occlusion Zone was dissolved after the Stormwall's fall.

Description

Bartokan V was a terrestrial planet that occupied the fifth orbital position in[3] the Bartokan system within the Tamarin sector of[2] the Outer Rim Territories. It was situated in grid square N-19 of the Standard Galactic Grid.[1]

History

By 230 BBY,[4] the Svor Clan who resided on Bartokan V requested the Galactic Republic classify the Bonbrak—a sentient species native to the planet whom the clan knew as the "barat-karabak"—as a protected species. The Republic ultimately complied with the clan's request.[3] That year,[4] during the High Republic Era, the Shani singer Crufeela was to take part in the annual Finance Ball on the Core Worlds planet Corellia. As part of a plan to have Crufeela prevented from participating in the ball, Jedi Padawan Ram Jomaram—who was friends with several Bonbraks—purchased a barat-karabak to take to the Shani to eat.[3]

As he made his way to where he was to meet with Crufeela, Jomaram mentally noted that he had not heard of barat-karabaks before, believing that to be due to the fact that they were supposedly endangered, unaware that they were actually Bonbraks. After discovering he was actually taking a Bonbrak named Teetak to the Shani, the Padawan reluctantly carried on with his plan and met with Crufeela, who told him about the species' homeworld and the Svor Clan who lived there. Before the Shani could eat Teetak, however, she was arrested.[3]

Later that year, the Nihil marauder organization formed the Occlusion Zone, a region of space stranded behind a hyperspace barrier known as the Stormwall.[5] In 228 BBY,[6] the Nihil expanded the Stormwall after a failed Republic and Jedi Order assault on the barrier,[7] which resulted in Bartokan V falling within Nihil territory.[1] Later that year,[8] the Nihil surrendered to the Republic following the Stormwall's fall, which dissolved the Occlusion Zone as a territory. The worlds of the Occlusion Zone,[9] which included Bartokan V,[1] were welcomed back into the Republic if they wished. However, some opted to retain their independence, while others remained under the control of individual Nihil warlords.[9]

Inhabitants

Bartokan V was the home planet of the sentient Bonbrak species, who spoke the Bonbreez language. The giant Svor Clan also resided on Bartokan V and worshipped the Bonbraks—whom they called the "barat-karabak"—as gods. At some point, the Svor Clan requested the Bonbraks be classified as a protected species, which the Galactic Republic agreed to do.[3]

Behind the scenes

Bartokan V was first mentioned in the 2022 young-adult novel The High Republic: Midnight Horizon, written by Daniel José Older and published as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[3] Phase I.[10]

  6. Star Wars: Timelines dates Starlight Beacon's destruction to 230 BBY. The implementation of the Guardian Protocols, which Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia places in 229 BBY, took place one week after Starlight Beacon's fall according to The High Republic – Shadows of Starlight 1. As The High Republic Adventures (2023) 4 takes place one year and two weeks after the destruction of Starlight Beacon, it must be set in 228 BBY. Since the events of The High Republic Adventures (2023) 6 are set immediately following the fourth issue and depict the expansion of the Stormwall, the expansion must have taken place in the same year. Meanwhile, the events of "Tales from the Occlusion Zone: No Big Deal" include the Stormwall's expansion and also depict the start of Pikka Adren's pregnancy. A later story, "Tales from the Occlusion Zone: Sparks Fly," states that Adren is eight months pregnant during its events, indicating that it is set eight months after "No Big Deal," and therefore one year, eight months, and two weeks after the fall of Starlight Beacon. "Sparks Fly" is set during the Battle of Eriadu, an event that begins in The High Republic Adventures Phase III - The Wedding Spectacular. As StarWars.com Star Wars: The High Republic Chronological Reader's Guide on StarWars.com (article) (backup link) places The High Republic: Defy the Storm between the events of "No Big Deal" and The Wedding Spectacular, its events must also be set in 228 BBY.
