Alexandra Winger

{{imp}}

Biography

Alexandra was a Human female born to Matt Turhaya and Anii Degarienne[1] in 12 BBY.[3] In 7 BBY, when Alexandra was five years old, her mother was killed in an accident at the weapons manufacturing plant where she was employed. Her father, who had recently graduated from the Imperial Naval Academy, was determined to make a life for himself and his daughter. Taking Alexandra to live with her maternal grandparents on the planet Janara III, Turhaya began serving with the Imperial Navy aboard the Star Destroyer Relentless.[1]

Alexandra was found in the rubble by an Imperial lieutenant, Chanceller. Chanceller dug her out of the ruins of her home, and took her aboard the Judicator, an Imperial-class Star Destroyer. She was barely alive, drifting in an out of consciousness, and refused to speak. One of the vessel's Senior Lieutenants, Brandei, suggested to the captain that Alexandra be fostered with friends of his, a childless couple on Garos IV. The captain agreed, and Alexandra was sent to Garos IV, accompanied by Brandei and Chancellor. At the medical center in the city of Ariana, she was given over to her new foster parents; Tork and Sali Winger. Several months passed, and Alexandra—now known as Alexandra Winger after her adoptive family—recovered, spending time with a young man named Dair Haslip who was a friend of the family. They played card games and Haslip promised to teach the young Winger how to play sabacc, but he joined the Imperial Army and was due to leave the planet. At Haslip's leaving party, Winger sensed that he missed a friend of his, Jos Mayda, who had been killed around the same time that she had arrived on Garos IV. She also sensed that Haslip wasn't really joining the Imperial Army—in this, she was correct. Haslip was a member of the Committee of Seven for Garosian Unification, an anti-Imperial resistance movement, and was joining the Imperial Military as a spy.[7]

Tork Winger

{{imp}}

Biography

Tork Winger was a Human male born on the planet Garos IV[2] in 62 BBY[8] to a politically well-connected family.[2] Sometime between 46 BBY and 44 BBY,[10] Winger became one of the first Garosians to enter the service of the Galactic Republic, training at the Academy of Carida and joining the army. After five years of service, Winger returned to Garos IV, and entered politics, using his familial connections.[7] By the time Winger was 30, in 32 BBY, he was the top aide to Garos' highest authority.[2]

By 16 BBY, Winger was serving as the Assistant Minister of Defense. He appointed Magir Paca, the son of one of his friends, as an aide, and mentored the young man as Paca rose through the ranks of the diplomatic service.[7]

Alongside the noted Sundar engineer Tionthes Turi, Winger negotiated a truce between the warring factions, ending eighty-two years of constant violence. The city of Garan, which had been the location of the majority of the conflict, was rebuilt and Garosian and Sundar leaders entered into peace negotiations. During the process, minor violations of the truce occurred, but two incidents were remembered more than others. The first was the Whahalla Massacre. The second was the assassination of Winger's friend, businessman and peace advocate West Haslip, and his wife, Nieka, in 12 BBY. Winger was present when they were killed by the Sundar bomb, and was injured in the explosion.[7]

Winger became the leading authority on the conflict, and was respected by leaders and diplomats on both sides due to his reputation as a just individual.[7] However, Winger's inability to truly end the conflict on Garos gnawed at him.[2] In 6 BBY, the Galactic Empire began to take a greater interest in Garos IV. Winger hoped that their presence would finally ensure a lasting peace between the Garosians and the Sundars.[7] The Empire's methods of ending the war were not what Winger had hoped for, but he could not argue with the result. He accepted that sacrifices had to be made for the greater good.[2]

The same year, a friend of Winger's, Imperial Senior Lieutenant Brandei of the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Judicator, contacted him. Brandei had just arrived on Garos IV, and requested to met with Winger and his wife at the medical center in Ariana. Upon arrival, Winger was presented with a young girl, who Brandei claimed was the child of Rebels destroyed[7] on the planet Janara III.[1] Brandei knew of the Wingers inability to conceive, and had convinced the captain of the Judicator to foster the child with the Wingers. Winger and Sali accepted, and accepted the child, Alexandra, into their home.[7]

Shortly after, Winger was appointed as Garos IV's Imperial Governor[7] by Emperor Palpatine due to the high regard that he was held in by the people of Garos IV. However, Winger's popularity did not stop many Garosians believing that the new governor was a traitor for his acceptance of the Empire.[2]

Chanceller

{{imp}}

Biography

Chanceller was a Human male born on the planet Corellia[11] in 28 BBY.[12] He began serving with the Imperial Navy in 8 BBY, assigned to the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Judicator.[11] Two years later, in 6 BBY, the Judicator was part of the Imperial force that attacked the settlement of Sreina on Janara III. Officially, the assault was to uncover rebels living in Sreina, but Chanceller soon learned that there were not rebels present, and the Imperial forces had destroyed an innocent settlement. While touring the ruins of the city, Chanceller came upon a young girl in the rubble of a destroyed house. Barely conscious, Chanceller rescued her and took her aboard the Judicator. The child survived, but refused to speak, and Chanceller remained with her, appointing himself her unofficial guardian. One of the Judicator's officers, Senior Lieutenant Brandei, suggested fostering the girl with friends of his on Garos IV, the Wingers. The captain of the Judicator agreed, and sent Brandei and Chancellor on ahead with the girl.[7]

On Garos IV, Chanceller stayed with the child in the medical center in Ariana until her new foster mother, Sali Winger, arrived. She thanked Chanceller for saving the child, and during their conversation Chanceller revealed that Imperial forces had been responsible for the destruction of her home, not Rebels as officially stated. Placing the young girl's hand in Sali's, Chanceller left the room. Several days later, he deserted from the Navy,[7] unable to serve the institution that had killed thousands of innocents.[11]

During his stay on Garos IV, Chanceller fell in with the underground resistance. He was caught in the middle of raid made by the resistance on an Imperial supply convoy. He assisted the underground fighters, and joined them. Chanceller's expertise with weapons and demolitions made him a valuable asset.[11]

Magir Paca

{{imp}}

Biography

Magir Paca was a Human male from the planet Garos IV.[2] His father was good friends with Tork Winger,[7] and Paca grew up calling him "Uncle".[2] When Paca began his governmental service, it was as an aide to Winger, who was serving as the Assistant Minister of Defense. For over ten years Paca served the government with Winger as his mentor. By 6 BBY, Paca held the post of Assistant Minister of Commerce. Unlike his mentor, who saw the Galactic Empire as a positive force in the galaxy, Paca despised the Empire and saw that it was a threat to Garos IV. He was one of the original leaders of the Garosian resistance, known as the Committee of Seven for Garosian Unification. The resistance worked to end the Garosian Civil War between the native Garosians and the Sundari colonists by convincing them that the Empire was the true enemy.[7]

Paca, along with Desto Mayda and Sundari radical Camron Gelorik, convinced a young Dair Haslip to join the Imperial Army as a spy. Haslip, who had been enthusiastic about joining the Empire until seeing his friend—and Desto Mayda's son—Jos killed by Imperial scout troopers, agreed.[7]

Paca's position allowed him to covertly supply useful information and intelligence to the resistance.[2]

In 4 ABY, Imperial forces realized there was a intelligence leak and set a trap to catch the perpetrator. Evidence against Paca was compiled, and the Empire suspected he was a member of the resistance and built a case against him. Fortunately for Paca, Governor Winger's adopted daughter, Alexandra had sliced into the Imperial computer files and discovered the information pertaining to Paca. Alexandra warned him of the danger, and Paca managed to disappear before Imperial soldiers could arrest him. Going underground, Paca took a more active role in the resistance, and began to coordinate the underground's activities.[2]

Biography

Carl Barzon was a Human male[15] from the planet Sundari. He emigrated to the neighboring planet of Garos IV as a student, attending the University of Garos to conduct graduate work. Barzon remained on Garos IV, becoming a well-respected teaching professor and research scientist. In 19 BBY, Barzon began researching the ore hibridium. Only found on the western coastline of Garos IV's main continent, hibridium possessed natural cloaking properties. When the Galactic Empire established a presence on Garos IV around 5 BBY, Barzon joined the Committee of Seven for Garosian Unification, an anti-Imperial resistance movement. The professor feared that if the Empire obtained his research on hibridium, they would be able to fashion weapons capable of dominating the galaxy.[2]

Dair Haslip

{{imp}}

Biography

Dair Haslip was a Human male born on the planet Garos IV[7] in 25 BBY.[17] His family, including his parents, West and Nieka Haslip, were wealthy, and politically well-connected. Haslip's father was a well-known businessman and advocate for peace in the ongoing civil war that plagued Garos IV between the native Garosians and the Sundari colonists.[7]

Around 15 BBY, in the summer after Haslip's tenth birthday, he and his best friend, Jos Mayda, went climbing in the cliffs to the south of Mount Usca. During the climb, Haslip fell. Although uninjured, he was too scared to continue moving, and was gripping the rock face. Mayda talked Haslip into calming down and made him laugh, allowing him to continue climbing.[7]

In 12 BBY, at the age of thirteen, Haslip lost both his parents. Sundar terrorists, opposed to the truce in the civil war that had been forged by then-Assistant Minister of Defense Tork Winger and Sundari engineer Tionthes Turi, used a bomb to assassinate West Haslip. Nieka Haslip was also killed in the blast, and Tork Winger was injured. Orphaned, Haslip was raised by his paternal grandmother, Keriin Haslip. Haslip was also close to Tork Winger, and his wife Sali, referring to them as "Uncle" and "Aunt".[7]

In 6 BBY, at the completion of his education, Haslip applied to the Raithal Academy, hoping to join the ranks of the Imperial Army. He believed that Imperial influence was beneficial to Garos IV, and attending the Academy would be the culmination of a lifelong dream that he had shared with Mayda. Haslip and Mayda had dreamed of attending the Raithal Academy together, planning their future careers in their youth. However, Mayda's chance to attend the academy was shattered when his father Desto Mayda, was discovered to be a member of the Committee of Seven for Garosian Unification, an underground resistance movement opposed to the Imperial presence on Garos IV.[7]

Shortly after the revelation, Haslip escorted his grandmother to a reception, and discussed his future with the Assistant Minister of Commerce, Magir Paca. Haslip was impressed that Paca remembered who he was after the two had briefly met a year previously; Paca noted that he knew the Haslip family well, offering his condolences for the loss of Haslip's parents. Paca was also friends with Keriin Haslip, who soon joined them in conversation. Paca was soon called away by an aide, Linsa, who informed him that Imperial Senior Lieutenant Brandei had arrived on planet, and was asking to see Tork Winger at the medical center in Ariana. Haslip was disappointed at Minister Winger's impending departure, as he had promised to tell Haslip about his own days at the Academy. It was shortlived, however, when Sali Winger joined them. The Wingers had been due to give the Haslips a lift home, and Sali informed them that the offer still stood, but it would be after their trip to the medical center and that the Haslips were welcome to accompany them. Haslip was excited at the prospect of meeting an actual Imperial officer.[7]

At the medical center, Lieutenant Brandei showed the Haslips and Wingers a young girl. He claimed that she was the child of Rebels killed in a raid[7] on Janara III.[1] The captain of Brandei's vessel, the Judicator, had agreed to the lieutenant's proposition to foster her with his friends, the Wingers, as they were not able to conceive a child of their own. Haslip accompanied his grandmother and Sali Winger into the girl's hospital room where another Imperial lieutenant, Chanceller, sat with her. Chanceller had been the officer to find the girl, and informed the three that rebels had not been responsible for the raid. They had been looking for a Rebel stronghold near the girl's home, but Imperial forces had been responsible for the destruction. Haslip did not believe the lieutenant, but noticed that his grandmother did.[7]

A few nights later, Mayda convinced Haslip to go hiking in the forested hills, although Haslip felt that they would get into trouble as Imperial scout troopers were patrolling the area. They talked about Mayda's father, and how his son felt betrayed. Haslip offered to talk to Minister Winger in an effort to allow his friend to attend the Academy, but Mayda refused. Noticing two scout troopers on speeder bikes, Mayda believed that they were searching for Lieutenant Chanceller, who had deserted the Imperial Navy, and wished to get a closer look. Instead, the pair were spotted by the scout troopers who circled around toward them. Haslip ran for nearby caves, but Mayda went off in the opposite direction into the forest. The two troopers caught up to Mayda, believing that he was spying on Imperial mining operations and attempted to take him back to their headquarters. Haslip, who had heard shooting in the distance, watched from the forest as Mayda resisted, tackling one trooper and disarming him, the blaster rifle coming to rest near Haslip. As Haslip picked the weapon up, Mayda began running, and was gunned down by the second trooper. Haslip killed the armed trooper, then pleaded with the unarmed trooper not to move as he did not want to kill an unarmed man. The trooper, however, dove for his colleague's fallen weapon. Haslip killed him.[7]

Haslip confessed to his grandmother, not believing that Imperial soldiers would shoot unarmed men in the back and questioning if he would end up like them if he joined the Imperial Army. His grandmother understood, and revealed her own anti-Imperial feelings. She took Haslip to meet some of her friends; the Garosian resistance whose leadership including Magir Paca, Desto Mayda, and the Sundari radicalist Camron Gelorik. Haslip no longer wanted to serve the Empire, but the resistance convinced him to attend the Imperial Academy as an undercover operative. It would take years, but they believed that Haslip would be an invaluable asset to them. Once established, Haslip would request a transfer back to Garos IV and join their efforts. Over the next few months, Haslip prepared for his new role, and found time to enjoy weekly card games with the Wingers new adopted daughter, Alexandra. Eventually, as he was due to leave Garos IV, a party was held for him. Paca and Winger wished him well, and Alexandra questioned why he was leaving. Haslip told her that he was joining the Army; Alexandra replied that she did not believe him, but she wouldn't tell anyone.[7]

Matt Turhaya

{{imp}}

Biography

Matt Turhaya was a Human male born on the planet Corellia. His father was Arada Turhaya, a hero of the Clone Wars who had been a commander in the Grand Army of the Republic, and he had a older brother, Jamie. During his youth, Turhaya's desire was to serve in the Imperial Navy. His childhood sweetheart, Anii Degarienne, encouraged him, leading him to attend the Imperial Naval Academy. Turhaya and Degarienne married, and in 12 BBY, the union produced a daughter, Alexandra. In 7 BBY, Turhaya graduated from the Academy at the top of his class. Several weeks before graduation, an accident occurred at the weapons manufacturing facility where Anii Degarienne worked, resulting in her death. Turhaya was devastated by her loss, but resolved to make a good life for himself and their daughter.[1]

Turhaya took Alexandra to Janara III, leaving his daughter with her maternal grandparents in the city of Sreina. He then reported aboard the Star Destroyer Relentless to start his tour of duty. During his service, Turhaya quickly became disillusioned with the Galactic Empire, and despised its methods and actions. The Relentless was assigned to subdue planetary populations through the application of brutal force; appalled, Turhaya deserted. A year later, in 6 BBY, Turhaya arrived back at Janara III planning to begin a new life with Alexandra. When he arrived, he found that Sreina had been destroyed by Imperial forces[1] commanded by High Inquisitor Adalric Cessius Brandl.[20] Turhaya found no survivors of the raid; the house that Alexandra and her grandparents lived in had been levelled. Finding only a half-shredded burnt holo of his wife and daughter, Turhaya believed that Alexandra had been killed.[1] Unbeknownst to him, Alexandra had survived the attack, and had been discovered in the rubble by Lieutenant Chanceller[7] of the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Judicator.[11] She was subsequently taken to the planet Garos IV, where she was fostered with the planet's Imperial governor, Tork Winger and his wife, Sali.[7]

Turhaya turned to drink, drifting from spaceport to spaceport taking a succession of odd jobs. Eventually, three years after losing Alex, he made his way to Tatooine where his brother Jamie had established a landspeeder repair shop. Jamie gave his younger brother a job in the shop, as Turhaya was a decent mechanic. In the six months after his arrival, Jamie attempted to help his brother overcome his sadness, but Turhaya spent many nights drunk in one of the local cantinas. A drunken Turhaya would often be collected by his elder brother, who tried to understand his loss and help him through it, but Turhaya found it too hard to move on and accept they were gone.[1]

One night in the cantina, Turhaya encountered Tere Metallo, a female Riileb free-trader who captained the Star Quest. While no conversation was exchanged, the two locked gazes and Turhaya instantly felt a kinship with the female and knew that she had suffered as he had. The next day, Turhaya returned to the cantina to find Metallo immersed in a game of sabacc with a Twi'lek businessman, Cha'ba, a Chandrilan spice runner named Pira Bland, and a Corellian. The Corellian's Wookiee partner announced that their starship was ready for departure, and the Corellian left the game. Turhaya asked to join the game in progress, asking for drink from the bar while he did so. Metallo made sure that the drink was tea, insisting that she never took credits off of anyone who was drunk. During the course of the game, Turhaya wagered his brother's landspeeder repair shop against Metallo and lost. Taking Metallo to the shop, Turhaya faced his brother with the news. Jamie was angry, pointing out that Turhaya had no right to wager it. Fortunately for Jamie, Metallo overheard the conversation, and understood that Turhaya had no stake in the business. However, he still owed her 150,000 credits. It was agreed that he would work off the debt by conducting repairs on her ship, and acting as her co-pilot. As Turhaya prepared to leave, Jamie apologized to his brother for not being able to help him.[1]

A month passed, and Metallo worked Turhaya hard, driving him to do various jobs around the ship and causing Turhaya to liken her to a drill instructor he had known. At their various port stops, Metallo gave Turhaya enough money for him to indulge in a drink or two, but no more. Eventually, the Star Quest put in at Eponte Spaceport on Kabaira. While waiting for cargo bound for Ord Traga to be loaded, Turhaya visited Drayhar's Cantina, partaking in a glass of Zadarian brandy. Metallo arrived soon after, and insisted that Turhaya meet several of her contacts on the planet. As Metallo did a lot of business on Kabaira, she felt it was important that Turhaya know them. She introduced him to Menise from Dantooine, Branak from Ryloth, and two Kabairans named Treimar and Del Hunter. After playing sabacc for several hours, Metallo and Turhaya prepared to leave when an Imperial lieutenant and two stormtroopers entered the bar. As the pair passed the Imperials, the lieutenant appeared to recognize Turhaya. Turhaya, who knew the man from his class at the Imperial Academy, claimed to be "Jamie Brightstar" and that the lieutenant was confusing him with someone else. The lieutenant apparently agreed, and let them go. As they headed back to the Star Quest, Turhaya admitted he was an Imperial deserter. Metallo simply responded that he would have to stay out sight in Imperial patrolled ports.[1]

On their way back to the Star Quest, blaster fire and explosions rocked the city of Eponte as Imperial forces raided a suspected Rebel cell. Reaching their ship, Turhaya and Metallo were denied clearance to leave as the entire starport was in lockdown. Investigating a noise, the pair found a wounded Del Hunter beneath the Star Quest, and he admitted to being a Rebel agent. Metallo took him aboard the Star Quest, and hid him in a sealed compartment while stormtoopers demanded entry to the ship to search for Rebels. The lieutenant from the cantina was leading the search, and he had recognized Turhaya earlier. He placed the Corellian under arrest, and Metallo feigned ignorance of his status as an Imperial deserter. Turhaya attempted to punch the Imperial lieutenant; a blow from the butt of a stormtrooper's blaster rifle knocked him out.[1]

Turhaya awoke in a detention cell in the Imperial headquarters with two survivors of the local Rebel cell; Chaz Hunter and Blaide. Blaide was more welcoming of Turhaya, but Chaz—Del's son—was wary of him, and suspected Turhaya was an Imperial plant. Shortly after, a female voice was heard from the security station claiming that she had been summoned to the prison on a medical emergency. Chaz, taking the cue, began to groan and moan. Accompanied by a stormtrooper sergeant, a young woman in an Imperial lieutenant's uniform was ushered into the cell. At the security station, two shots rang out, and the female lieutenant pulled a weapon on the stormtrooper. Metallo entered the cell, having secured the help of the local Rebels in freeing Turhaya through Del Hunter, and Chaz greeted the female lieutenant. Blaide killed the stormtrooper sergeant, and Chaz donned the armor.[1]

Travelling aboard a skiff, the lieutenant drove them to Docking Bay 10. Encountering an Imperial checkpoint on the way, the group tried to bluff their way through but were forced to open fire on the group of stormtroopers. On route to the docking bay, Blaide revealed that he was working for the Imperials and tried to kill Metallo. Turhaya jumped in front of the blast, taking a grazing injury. Metallo killed Blaide in turn. Arriving at the Star Quest, Chaz was reunited with his father, and Metallo and Turhaya took the three surviving Rebels offworld with them. Evading a flight of Z-95 Headhunters, the Star Quest made the jump to lightspeed.[1]

Tere Metallo

{{imp}}

Biography

Tere Metallo was a female Riileb born on the planet Riileb[21] prior to 29.5 BBY.[22] She was a member of the MotherClan,[21] a family group that claimed to be direct descendants of the first Riileb. The MotherClan were the holders of the ClanRing, said to be crafted by the first Riileb, and the holder of the ClanRing was the leader of all Riileb. Traditionally, the eldest female of the MotherClan received the ClanRing after thirty local years,[23] and Metallo was the next in line. However, one of her sisters was jealous of Metallo, and arranged for her to be sold into slavery when she was twenty-five local years old.[21]

She was rescued from slavery by Bek Nataal, a Corellian smuggler. Nataal took Metallo under his wing[21] as an assistant aboard his light freighter,[1] and taught her everything he knew about starships, trade routes and smuggling. For seven years the pair worked together,[21] with Metallo proving herself to be a loyal crew member who learned quickly,[1] until they were boarded by Imperial authorities. During the inspection, Nataal was killed, and Metallo incarcerated. Metallo was tortured by the Empire,[21] resulting in a three centimeter scar on her face,[1] and was slated for imprisonment on Kessel. She managed to escape from captivity before she could be transferred.[21]

Trading work for passage, Metallo eventually arrived on Corellia. She worked as a mechanic repairing freighters, and saved up enough credits to buy her own ship, the Suwantek Systems TL-1800 freighter Star Quest. Setting out on her own, Metallo made both legal and illegal cargo runs through the Mid Rim[21] and the Outer Rim Territories over the course of several years. She avoided taking sides in the Galactic Civil War.[1]

Keriin Haslip

{{imp}}

Biography

Keriin Haslip was a Human female born on Garos IV[7] in 86 BBY.[27] The only daughter of Rees Haslip, an entrepreneur and founder of RH Mining Corporation, Haslip was raised to carry on the family business. She married her childhood sweatheart, Trenar Stilijan, and they had a son, West. The marriage was brief; Stilijan left Garos IV to serve in the army, and was killed in action. By 46 BBY, at the age of forty, Haslip took over her father's business and was a key player in Garosian politics. The civil war between the native Garosians and the Sundari colonists heavily affected her business interests, and she sought to find a peaceful settlement with Sundar businessmen and leaders.[7]

Her son, West, married a woman named Nieka, and they bore a son, Dair in 25 BBY. In 12 BBY, West and Nieka were killed by a Sundari bomb, and Haslip took over the responsibility for raising Dair. Despite the deaths of her son and daughter-in-law, Haslip still sued for peace. She began to suspect that the Galactic Empire was in some way responsible for their deaths, and she joined the Committee of Seven for Garosian Unification, an anti-Imperial resistance movement. For several years, the Empire attempted to buy her mining company, but Haslip refused at each turn. However, when Dair announced his intention to join the Imperial Army, Haslip finally agreed to sell. She came to realize that the Empire could take what it wanted, and feared that Dair's career would be stalled due to her non-compliance.[7]

  22. 22.0 22.1 According to Rendezvous with Destiny, Metallo was twenty-five years old when sold into slavery by her sister. Alien Encounters in Star Wars Adventure Journal 13 indicates that 30 local years on Riileb equates to 21 standard years, meaning that a local year lasted approximately 1.43 standard years (30 local years divided by 21 standard years equals 1.428). Using this information, we can calculate that 25 local years equates to approximately 17.5 standard years (25 local years divided by a 1.43 standard year equals 17.48). After being rescued, she spent seven standard years serving with Bek Nataal, for a total 24 and a half years. According to Passages, she then spent several years trading on her own. As "several" is loosely defined as being more than two, this means she spent a minimum of two years working independently. Passages is set in 3 BBY according to The Essential Reader's Companion, and details events after her time with Nataal and her years as an independent trader. A simple application of mathematics means that Metallo must be have been born at least 29.5 years prior to the Battle of Yavin (17.5 standard years at time of enslavement + 7 years spent with Nataal + minimum of 2 years independent + 3 years prior to the Battle of Yavin = 29.5 years).
