"Passages" is a short story written by Charlene Newcomb that was originally published in Star Wars Adventure Journal 7 by West End Games in August 1995.
Plot summary
Tere Metallo, captain of the freighter Star Quest, takes on a down-on-his-luck mechanic, Matt Turhaya, as part of her crew. During an Imperial crackdown on Rebel activity on Kabaira, an Imperial officer identifies Matt as a deserter and arrests him. Tere frees Matt, as well as several other captive Rebels, with the help of the local underground.
After Matt loses to Tere in a sabacc game in Mos Eisley, he becomes the co-pilot of the Star Quest.
Continuity
Charlene Newcomb's story connected to her larger Alex Winger series, though this tale was set many years before it. Matt mourned the loss of his wife and young daughter, the girl who would grow up to be Alex Winger after being adopted into a prominent family on Garos IV.[2]
The placement of this tale was left ambiguous on Charlene Newcomb's original timeline; however, Alex Winger's age at the time of her adoption[3][4] suggests that this tale takes place in 3 or 2 BBY. Though existence of the Alliance to Restore the Republic may seem to indicate 2 BBY, The Essential Reader's Companion places it in 3 BBY.
