An Imperial factory facility was part of the Narkina 5 Imperial Prison Complex on the remote Outer Rim moon Narkina 5 in the Narkina system. Situated in the middle of a lake, the large Imperial factory facility used hydroelectric dams to generate power for the entire factory.[2] The prison had a capacity of 5,000 prisoners, divided between 7 floors. Each floor contained several cells, split between a day and night shift. With every convict labeled "labor worthy" prior to their imprisonment, each shift was split into different tables competing to construct parts for the imperial war machine, as well as each room competing with all other rooms on the floor. While the most productive table or room received flavor in their foodstuff, the worst performing table or room received a low-energy electrical shock. To deliver these shocks, the prison's officers utilized tunqstoid steel-coated floors spread across the facility, which were also used to enforce security or to enforce compliance, or in one case, fry and kill an entire floor.[1]

In 5 BBY, inmates at the facility, along with those in other prisons, received a doubling to their sentences as part of the Public Order Resentencing Directive, a result of the Aldhani heist, a heist on an imperial payroll carried out by the Axis network. That same year, Aldhani rebel infiltration team member Cassian Jeron Andor, who was living under the alias "Keef Girgo", was sentenced to six years imprisonment and hard labor at the factory facility. Despite his connection to the Aldhani heist,[5] Andor was sentenced on unrelated and baseless suspicions of a Coastal defender stormtrooper on the planet Niamos.[1]

By the time of Andor's arrival, the prison secretly produced EP-N5 fasteners[3] for the Death Star's Mk I Superlaser dish as part of Project Stardust,[4] which was transported to the construction site in orbit over Scarif via Eta-class barges.[4] Despite the prisoners' beliefs that they would be released at the end of their sentences, in reality they were transported to another prison to continue to contribute in hard labor for the secret project. However, during Andor's imprisonment in the facility, the prison accidentally transferred a prisoner from the prison's forth level to its second level rather than another prison, leading to the floor getting fried to stop the spread of the information. However, word of an issue on level 2 still made it's way around the prison, and following the death Ulaf, of one of Cassian's fellow workers at table five, Cassian, along his shift manager Kino Loy, learned from a prison doctor of the events that transpired on level two. Armed with their new knowledge, Cassian's shift, Five-Two-D, decided to revolt against the prison during the arrival of Ulaf's replacement. Using water from pipes to the refresher to short circuit the electrocuting floors, the prisoners then climbed their way out of the room, and armed with the weapons meant for prison guars, freed nearby rooms while Kino and Cassian stormed the facility's command center. Soon, Cassian forced the command center's staff to shut down the power, Kino gave a passionate speech over the facility's intercom, encouraging the inmates to revolt, as the floors had been deactivated. Following this, prisoners continued to free themselves from their cells, and made their way to the level 8's loading bays, before jumping into the lake below to escape, with the exception of Kino, who unable to swim, watched the prisoners continue to escape the facility.[2]
