The umbraspider was a type of spider that produced silk with unusual properties, making the spider's webs virtually invisible due to how it refracted and absorbed light. The silk of the umbraspider was used by the Sakiyan species[1] of the planet Saki[2] to weave the shadowsuits that made the wearer almost invisible except in bright light. The chemists of Ayelixe/Krongbing Textiles synthesized a rival material called shadowsilk after studying the properties of the fur of the Defel species, but Sakiyans claimed that umbraspider silk was superior.[1]
Behind the scenes
In the current Star Wars canon, umbraspiders were mentioned in the 2019 Star Wars Roleplaying supplement Gadgets and Gear, which was published by Fantasy Flight Games.[1] The spiders originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where they were mentioned in Lords of Nal Hutta, a 2015 supplement for Star Wars: Edge of the Empire that was also published by Fantasy Flight Games.[3]
