- "Though the First Order undoubtedly had their own hidden shipyards—the locations of which we must now establish as quickly as possible—it also seems likely that various Centrist worlds such as Arkanis, Kuat, and Orinda must have been supplying either financial support or construction expertise."
- ―Beaumont Kin, The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire
Orinda was a planet on the Entralla Route in the Orinda system in the Irishi sector in the Mid Rim Territories and New Territories. The rebel Cloud-Riders raided a fueling depot there by 10 BBY and were joined by one of the depot's security guards, Batcha Hunaris. The 204th Imperial Fighter Wing was involved in an event known as the Orinda Massacre there during the reign of the Galactic Empire.
By 28 ABY, Orinda was represented in the Senate of the New Republic by the Centrist senator Fatil, whom fellow Centrist Ransolm Casterfo thought might want the Empire to return. When the First Order emerged from the Unknown Regions in 29 ABY, Orinda seceded from the New Republic and joined the First Order, although the state was defeated in 35 ABY.
Description
Orinda was a terrestrial[4] world[6] of the Orinda system located in the Irishi sector of the Mid Rim Territories[1] and New Territories[2] in square K-6 of the Standard Galactic Grid.[1] It was part of the hyperspace route known as the Entralla Route[3] which connected it to[1] the Bright Jewel sector planet[7] Ord Mantell and[1] the planet[8] Ardennia.[1]
History
Imperial Era
- "What about the other story? The slogan. 'Where shadows fall, all things die'?"
"That was later. After the Red Insurgency."
"The Orinda Massacre."
"I imagine some people call it that." - ―Caern Adan and Yrica Quell
The 204th Imperial Fighter Wing was involved in a massacre on Orinda.
The brutish Batcha Hunaris worked as a security guard in a fueling depot on Orinda until it was raided by the rebel Cloud-Riders, at which point Hunaris joined them and left Orinda[4] by 10 BBY.[9] During the reign of the Galactic Empire, the 204th Imperial Fighter Wing took part in an event on Orinda that they referred to as the "Red Insurgency," although others named it the Orinda Massacre, after which they took on the motto "Where shadows fall, all things die."[10]
When the former 204th pilot Yrica Quell briefed a group of her new allies in the New Republic on the fighter wing aboard the bulk freighter Buried Treasure[10] in 4 ABY,[11] she explained the origin of the wing's nickname, Shadow Wing, as being caused by its elusiveness. New Republic Intelligence agent Caern Adan then brought up an alternate story where the nickname originated from the wing's motto, but Quell dismissed the Red Insurgency on Orinda and the motto's origin as having happened after the nickname. Adan used the name Orinda Massacre instead, which Quell acknowledged. By that same time, New Republic General Hera Syndulla had felt a numbing dismay when reading about the 204th's connection to Orinda.[10]
New Republic Era
- "Each of these worlds—alongside a number of others—all wanted a return to a central dominant ruler and all of them broke with the New Republic when the First Order fully emerged."
- ―Beaumont Kin, The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire
Orinda seceded from the New Republic to join the First Order.
By 28 ABY,[12] long after the fall of the Empire, Orinda was a member of the New Republic and was represented in the New Republic Senate by Senator Fatil, a member of the Centrists faction. During a party held by fellow Centrist Ransolm Casterfo, she admired and praised every item in his collection of Imperial memorabilia, causing him to believe that she wished to bring back the Empire, take him to bed, or both.[5]
When the First Order—a successor to the Empire—emerged from the Unknown Regions[6] in 29 ABY,[13] Orinda seceded from the New Republic to join the new state.[6] In 34 ABY, the First Order destroyed the New Republic Senate and took control of the galaxy until its defeat by the Resistance in 35 ABY.[14]
Following the fall of the First Order, the Resistance historian Beaumont Kin speculated in[6] his[7] book, The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire, that Orinda and other Centrist worlds like Kuat and Arkanis must have provided either financial support or construction expertise to the First Order prior to its emergence on the galactic stage. He described the world as wishing for a return to a central dominant ruler of the galaxy, as Galactic Emperor Sheev Palpatine had been during the Empire's reign.[6]
Locations
A fueling depot was located on Orinda.[4]
Behind the scenes
In the current Star Wars canon, Orinda was first mentioned in the 2016 novel Bloodline, which was written by Claudia Gray.[5] The world originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it was first mentioned in the 1996 novel Before the Storm, which was written by Michael P. Kube-McDowell and the first entry in the Black Fleet Crisis trilogy.[15] It then appeared for the first time in the second issue of the 2011 comic book series Star Wars: Crimson Empire III: Empire Lost. The issue was written by Mike Richardson, illustrated by Paul Gulacy, and published by Dark Horse Comics[16] on November 30, 2011.[17]
