- "It's a hit!"
- ―Naytaan during the Battle of Yavin
Nozzo Naytaan was a human male Rebel pilot and lieutenant[7] who served in the Galactic Civil War. A member of Red Squadron, he flew in the Battle of Scarif with the callsign of Red Nine. Both from Corellia, Naytaan and Lieutenant Attico Wred, a fellow Rebel pilot who flew with Green Squadron as Green Four, had a friendly rivalry.[1] Just days after the Battle of Scarif, Naytaan was killed during the Battle of Yavin.[3]
During the Imperialization of the Corellian Engineering Corporation, Naytaan was a test pilot for the company. After learning that he would be assigned to test TIE fighters for the Galactic Empire, Naytaan fled and joined the Rebellion.[1]
At some point prior to 0 BBY, Naytaan was scheduled Shift Cycle 2 of an X-wing flight patrol mission accompanying fellow pilots Cdt. Harb Binli (Red Seven) and Pedrin Gaul (Red Five). Their mission was to route from Yavin to Gordian Trace Relays, perform a flyby of surrounding space, then after verifying visual and sensor all clear, perform close uplink of passive relay recordings.[7]
Behind the scenes
Nozzo Naytaan's flight helmet was similar to Attico Wred's helmet
Naytaan's voice is heard in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. His two lines of dialogue, "Red Nine standing by" and "It's a hit!" were both spoken over the comm systems of his X-wing starfighter, although his second line wasn't associated with his character until 2008. He was identified as Red Nine at the Battle of Scarif by Star Wars: Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide. In Star Wars: Rogue One, Nozzo Naytaan is portrayed by Frank Stone. The short story "Duty Roster" later re-canonized Nozzo's participation in the Battle of Yavin.
In Legends, Naytaan was stated to be born on Regellia. In canon, Star Wars: Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide changed his homeworld to Corellia.
Naytaan's helmet is similar to the design of Attico Wred's in the film. They both match the design of Luke Skywalker's blast shield helmet in A New Hope and Dorovio Bold's helmet in Return of the Jedi,[8] as well Darnell Reggs' from the Legends video game Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire.
