Happy International Women's Day!
Here's a proposal to overhaul our Deletion policy, carrying on from the relevant SH discussions here (2023) and here (2024). I had previously cleaned up the related speedy deletions maintenance page in 2022. This vote will be on whether or not to adopt my proposed text (diff).
The main goal here is for the "Deletion policy" to not just to be a list of rules but a guide that takes users and admins through what they can do in requesting or contesting deletions and undeletions.
A summary of the proposed changes:
- The introduction is rewritten to give a clear overview of deletion procedures, as documented in the rest of the page.
- A new section very briefly explains the Trash compactor process.
- New sections very explaining how to request and dispute "speedy deletions," plus reminders of resolving disputes properly and a suggestion to bring issues to the TC if there is disagreement. Resources for asking for help, such as the SH, Discord, and the Contact and Admin pages are also provided.
- A mention that users have the right to request the deletion of their own userpage(s), per our User page and profile policy, and the option of using RevisionDelete, as noted below.
- The conditions for speedy deletion are rewritten for concision and to be more comprehensive. Current practices regarding redirects, files, templates, categories, and copyright violations are also listed.
- A new section on undeletion procedures. It mentions points from the administrative autonomy policy, plus the current practice of requesting the undeletion of a file if it is intended to be used.
- A new section formalising current practices around RevisionDelete, including the conditions of its use (personal information and "grossly insulting, degrading, or offensive" Fandom Terms of Use–violating content, such as slurs) referencing our anti-discrimination policy and guidance page (which fleshes out the Terms of Use) and related guidelines on the talk page policy (which contain older rules that may need revising), following discussions with Fandom staff in March and July, 2023. It also addresses the differences between the rights of bureaucrats (whom Fandom allows to use the tool) and other admins (who may only view hidden content).
