Biography
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Neal Scanlan was the Creature Effects Supervisor for the Star Wars anthology film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.[2] When Pablo Hidalgo was writing the reference book Star Wars: Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide, he talked to Scanlan to learn what the crew's inspirations for the characters were. When Hidalgo visited the Rogue One set, he received a crash-course in the aliens from Scanlan.[3]
Andor television series

B2EMO was designed by Neal Scanlan.
Neal Scanlan was the Creature and Droid FX Creative Supervisor for the Star Wars: Andor television series. He treated working on the show the same way he would work on a film.[4] When designing the droid B2EMO, Scanlan and his team decided to design something that was rectangular and squat. They looked at the script and were able to understand what B2EMO would have to do in the show. The team considered this as well as the droid's relationship with the surrounding world, allowing them to figure out how to emote through small gestures, body language, and the motion of the head.[5] Scanlan and his creature shop built B2EMO from scratch, and they figured out every detail including his square figure and red color. The droid was entirely practical and controlled with a remote, allowing the actors to share scenes with the droid.[6] B2EMO was the first droid built by Scanlan's team that was able to do things that could be recognized emotionally, and he was capable of shrinking down.[5]
