- "Look at you. Even now…People know what you're doing. We've had reports all night. There's mining equipment being dropped all over the planet. Rigs and droids and—"
"That's a rumor!"
"Are you mad? That I'd believe that? That it's worth saying? What kind of a being are you? What's in our ground? Hmm? What is it you've been sent to steal from us?" - ―Carro Rylanz and Syril Karn
Carro Rylanz was a human male Ghorman businessman and elected official on the planet Ghorman.[3] A respected Palmo city official, he presided over town halls, discussing the Imperial occupation of the planet, and made levelheaded pleas for calm de-escalation.[2] In truth, by 3 BBY, he was the leader of an emerging rebel group known as the Ghorman Front,[3] in which his daughter Enza Rylanz was also a central figure.[2] Alongside Enza, Carro was also a member of the Twillery House of Rylanz, which had been in their family for nineteen generations.[1]
Carro and the Ghorman Front secretly placed a listening device in inside Division Chief Syril Karn's office. As a result, Rylanz and the Ghorman Front learned that Karn was an Imperial spy and was also a former Preox-Mor Authority officer on Morlana One.[1]
In 2 BBY, Carro told Enza not to stand up directly to the Empire, saying they could only be silenced if they were to be killed. Despite Carro's warning, Enza joined the mob of peaceful protestors against the Imperial occupation of Ghorman at Palmo Plaza and was killed in the carnage. During the Massacre, Carro cornered Karn, killing him as Karn pointed a blaster at Cassian Andor.[5]
Biography
Early life
Carro Rylanz was human male and a businessman and member of the Ghorman council, he ran the Twillery House of Rylanz which had been in his family for generations. He had a daughter, Enza Rylanz, who he was close too and worked at House of Rylanz with him. Rylanz advocated for peaceful protests against the Empire, and began the Ghorman Front rebellion group.
Rebellion
Carro listened to bugs planted by the Ghorman Front
In 3 BBY, Rylanz headed to where the Ghorman Front were spying on ISB member Syril Karn. He listened to the rebels, including Enza and Samm, discuss their opinions on Karn and whether he would become an informant for them. Rylanz decided to approve the mission before Karn was replaced.[3]
Rylanz later sat on the council for a town hall meeting, and listened with visible frustrations to the complaints of the Ghorman people. After the meeting dispersed, Samm, Enza, and her boyfriend Dilan introduced him officially to Karn. Rylanz attempted to gage whether Karn would report the meeting to his superiors, but Karn assured him that he was there of his own choice. Rylanz then revealed his beliefs that the Empire were concealing something in their transports, with Karn's confused answers serving to confirm these suspicions. Rylanz then explained the Tarkin Massacre and the Monument to the Fallen, to which Karn expressed sympathy. The pair shook hands, with Rylanz content in having recruited a spy in the ISB, unaware that Karn was an Imperial plant.[3]
Some days later, Enza and Dilan brought Rylanz a report of Karn's history, which revealed that he was fired from his job as a corporate cop under dishonourable circumstances. Rylanz smiled, and became more confident in Karn's position as their spy. He and Enza intercepted Karn as he walked home from work, the pair expressed sympathy for Karn over an ISB raid at his office. Karn openly speculated about corruption in the ISB and expressed frustration at their treatment of him, which caused Rylanz to smile. Rylanz revealed their belief that The Emperor was unaware of the Empire's actions and they were running a shadow government. They ultimately instructed a receptive Karn to discover the contents of the Imperial shipments.[1]
Rylanz met with rebel spy Cassian Jeron Andor, who was in disguise as a fashion designer, in House of Rylanz. Andor was frustrated as Enza had disobeyed instructions and waited for him at the cafhouse the prior night, Rylanz agreed and stated they needed more experience. They, along with Enza and Dilan, discussed Andor's superior and the Front's suspicions about a new armory being built in Palmo Plaza. Rylanz stated they had infiltrated the ISB, but Andor was suspicious of the reliability of Karn as a source, aware of their disinformation tactics. Samm joined the conversation, and Rylanz had to quieten the younger rebels.[1]
Later that night, Rylanz met with Andor alone at the cafhouse where he asked if Andor could bring reinforcements. Andor was reluctant due to their lack of experience and willingness to advertise their presence. Rylanz asked if they should allow themselves to simply be oppressed before ultimately leaving in anger.[1]
At the Ghorman Front Headquarters, Rylanz met Andor's replacement rebel operatives Vel Sartha and Cinta Kaz. Rylanz attempted to calm the Ghorman Front members, who were reluctant to take orders from the two outsiders. Rylanz ultimately chose to approve the heist with Sartha and Kaz in charge, despite the reluctance of Samm and Dreena.[6]
Destruction and Massacre
In 2 BBY, Rylanz continued to operate as the leader of the Ghorman Front, however members of the group were frustrated by his pacifistic views. Dilan and Enza chastised him for seemingly changing his mind and not taking responsibility for beginning the front, but Rylanz argued that peaceful resistance was the only thing with dignity. As the meeting devolved into an argument, Lezine interrupted and reunited the group with a reminder of their identity as the Ghor.[7]
The next morning, Rylanz was at the headquarters when he received news that the Imperials were removing the barricades around Palmo Plaza. Whilst the Front assembled weapons and prepared to protest, he became suspicious and went to the barricades to see the reconfiguration. Rylanz realized that the Imperials were protecting the Imperial office complex when he was joined by Enza. He told her that the Imperials were setting a trap, but she argued the importance of the rally and that they could no longer be silent. Rylanz stated that silence was preferable to death and rushed to stop the protest.[8]
Rylanz ran through the march of Ghorman civilians unsuccessfully shouting warnings about the trap they were walking into. He saw Syril Karn, now exposed as an Imperial spy, and angrily grabbed him. The pair briefly struggled before Rylanz shoved him into a doorframe. Rylanz denounced him for his betrayal, and demanded to know the reason for Imperial mining equipment landing in Ghorman. Karn dismissed it as rumours; a disgusted Rylanz told him to open his eyes, asking what kind of a being he was. Karn broke free and pushed Rylanz to the ground.[8]
Carro shot and killed Syril Karn
After the massacre erupted, Rylanz armed himself with a blaster and made his way through the chaos, where he saw Karn threatening Andor with a blaster. Rylanz killed Karn with a single blaster shot to the head, shocking Andor. Wilmon Paak then arrived and helped Andor away as Rylanz continued to stare grimly at Karn's body. Later, a sickly and distraught Rylanz sat despondently in a corridor listening to the screams and blaster fire outside.[8]
