Cassian Andor and K-2SO during a raid

On board the Star Herald while traveling through Wild Space, CR-8R "Crater" and BB-00 "Boo" play a game of Dejarik. Crater boasts to Boo that the smaller droid will never win against him because he is simply not programmed to. Emil Graf disagrees, so he tells Boo that even though it seems like programming gets in the way, sometimes it is best to go with the flow, which reminds him of a story about the raid of an Imperial freighter in the F'tzner system.

Several decades earlier,[4] Cassian Andor of the Rebel Alliance and his droid companion, K-2SO infiltrate this storied freighter to steal supplies needed by the Rebel Army. Andor had deployed gas to knock out the stormtroopers and to trick the Galactic Empire into thinking smugglers had stolen supplies, rather than the Rebel Alliance. K-2SO, however, believes this to be the worst idea Cassian has ever had.

When they finally breach the hold, both are surprised to find that instead of military equipment, the room contains three young Wookiees. This compromises their mission, but Andor recognizes that the Wookiees must have some value to the Empire, so he decides to liberate them. Andor and K-2SO are set to join an upcoming raid, however, so Andor decides to fly the Wookiees to the monastery moon, Charissia, a mostly deserted place known only by a few smugglers. On the surface, Andor puts K-2SO in charge of watching the Wookiees while he goes on the raid. The droid is reluctant to accept, but Andor promises to be back by sunrise and takes off.

K-2SO tries to have the Wookiees, who are named D'Koetaa, Wyhyatt, and D'Lylaa, eat a protein mixture he made. Wookiees, however, refuse to eat the unappetizing simulacrum of food. He tries to persuade the Wookiees by telling them that they will become big and strong. As K-2SO thinks of an apt comparison, he is surprised to find an apt one in the massive, gray creatures suddenly running around them. The Wookiees run away as the creatures stampede, but one of the beasts runs over K-2SO. Just before the droid gets crushed, D'Koetaa uses a black vine to lasso K2 and pull him out of harms way. When K3 recovers, he is amazed to find Wyhyatt and D'Lylaa wrangling and riding the creatures. K-2SO subsequently mounts his own creature, realizing he is equally scared and impressed. The quartet enjoy an evening by a pond snacking on local berries while surrounded by local fauna.

The next day, Cassian returns from his raid, accompanied by other rebels. He calls out for K-2SO and the Wookiees. K-2SO and the younglings soon approach. Andor confirms to K2 that his raid was a success and that he has procured a safe home for the Wookiees. K-2SO, for his part, revels in finding that Cassian was right: everybody likes the droid. He tells Cassian that anybody else would be too small and soft to deal with the tough work of "Wookiee-sitting".

Back on the Star Herald, Emil Graf tells Crater that sometimes people are blind to their own potential and that there is more to winning then just their programming. Nevertheless, Crater still believes he can win.

Development

"I wrote some of K-2SO's words in this. I know how he speaks and thinks since I spoke and thunk him in Rogue One."
―Alan Tudyk[5]

While Shannon Denton wrote the story, Alan Tudyk was brought on to write some of K-2SO's dialogue.[1]

  3. As shown in "The Lost Stories, Part 3," the events of all the Star Wars Adventures: Tales from Wild Space comics are set a relatively short time apart. "Tales from Wild Space: The Best Pet" depicts CR-8R being aware of the events following those of Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi, and "The Lost Stories, Part 1" features the First Order. Star Wars: Timelines places The Last Jedi and fall of the First Order to 34 ABY and 35 ABY, respectively. Therefore, the Star Wars Adventures: Tales from Wild Space comics must take place at some point between those years.
  4. 4.0 4.1 Tales from Wild Space: "Adventures in Wookiee-Sitting" takes place after the formation of the Rebel Alliance, but prior to the Battle of Scarif. Star Wars: Timelines dates the foundation of the Rebel Alliance to 2 BBY, and the Battle of Scarif to 1 BBY. Therefore Tales from Wild Space: "Adventures in Wookiee-Sitting" takes place some time between Between 2 and 1 BBY
