Publisher's summary
On the Outer Rim, the planet Lanteeb has no strategic value, no political power, and one enormous problem: it has been invaded by an emboldened Separatist Alliance. To find out why, Jedi Knights Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi have snuck onto Lanteeb – and now look oblivion in the eye…
Hiding their lightsabers beneath their dusty disguises, Anakin and Obi-Wan draw on their Jedi skills to stay one step ahead of Lok Durd's droid army on Lanteeb. The Jedi know that a captive scientist has given Durd the keys to a terrifying bioweapon. Durd knows that the Jedi are on his planet. With Yoda calling on the powers of the Jedi Council, with a new Separatist technology jamming the Guardians' communications, and a traitor at the heart of the Republic's government, the wheels of war are turning. But the Separatists have blockaded Lanteeb. The finishing touches are being put on a weapon to destroy whole worlds. And it will be up to the two Jedi Knights and their most trusted comrades to liberate Lanteeb or forever suffer the consequences.
Plot summary
Anakin and Obi-Wan flee into the countryside to the damotite-mining town of Torbel. Still posing as locals, they work in the mines and save the down during an intense radiation storm. Anakin’s use of the Force in doing so alerts the locals that they are Jedi. Though the townspeople are by their nature wary, the selflessness displayed by the Jedi earns their loyalty. Meanwhile, Ahsoka Tano and Jedi Knight Taria Damsin journey to Corellia to ensure the safety of Fhernan’s mother. Similar missions are carried out across the galaxy, and the Jedi secure the rest of Fhernan’s loved ones. Durd, however, continues to pressure her, using holographic illusions to make her think they are still in jeopardy. Desperate to prove the damotite weapon’s effectiveness, Durd impetuously launches and attack on Chandrila with it, killing thousands.
The Republic launches a limited task force of three vessels to Lanteeb. Senators Padmé Amidala and Bail Organa, on their own initiative bolsters this fleet with volunteer civilian ships. Taria Damsin soars past the Separatist blockade of Lanteeb to the land on the surface. She contacts Fhernan, revealing the safety of her loved ones. Fhernan destroys the samples of the bioweapon, sacrificing herself as penance for the Chandrilan massacre. Durd orders his battle droids to lay siege to Torbel. Anakin jury-rigs the town’s storm shield to deflect the enemy droids. Taria reunites with Obi-Wan, and Anakin discovers Obi-Wan has feelings for this Jedi, a close colleague he has known for most of his life. Noting this strong personal bond between them, Anakin can’t help but see hypocrisy in the Jedi strictures against romantic commitment.
The Republic overpowers the Separatist blockade, but Durd escapes with the fleeing Confederacy vessels. With the help of the villagers, the Republic is able to synthetize an antidote to the bioweapon, nullifying its threat.
Continuity
The Outer Rim sieges are mentioned in the novels. During the production of Episode III, this campaign – mentioned in the script – was at one point described as starting within six months of war’s end (20-19 BBY). The book seem to take place earlier than that, in 21 BBY, given that Ahsoka is described as only serving under Anakin for months, and she’s hesitant about repairing technology – a skill she possesses in the third season of the animated series. Furthermore, Obi-Wan is depicted as not being on the Jedi Council, though he is seen with a Council seat in the second-season episode "Senate Spy". Lok Durd is a villain from the first season episode “Defenders of Peace”.[2]
