"What are you doing?"
"We're playing."
"It's a cargo lift."
―Jod Na Nawood and Wim[1]

A cargo-lifting arm,[4] alternatively known as a cargo lift,[1] a cargo-loading claw arm,[5] or a lift claw,[6] was a claw-shaped mechanical device designed for heavy-duty lifting and grasping. A robust structure equipped with multiple joints and flexible grippers, the arm allowed for a range of motion and could easily adapt to various shapes and sizes.[1]

A cargo-lifting arm was installed in the Onyx Cinder, a starship that once belonged to the renown pirate captain Tak Rennod.[2] Abandoned on the isolated planet of At Attin, the Onyx Cinder was found by four younglings who accidentally started the vessel and embarked on a galactic journey.[7] Known the Skeleton Crew,[8] the children allied themselves with former Captain Jod Na Nawood and together with him travelled to the Observatory Moon to seek guidance from a friend of his, Kh'ymm. As the crew walked out of the Onyx Cinder, the youngling Wim mounted the cargo-lifting arm as it descended down the entry ramp, babbling to[1] himself.[4] After Jod found[1] the boy[7] playing, he reprimanded him for using the arm for unintended purposes.[1]

The Skeleton Crew younglings used the cargo-lifting arm one more time on Lanupa. Dressed as the "most wise elders", they mounted the lift claw and held on to it as it descended[2] for a more spectacular entry.[5] After the children parted ways with Jod, thier ship Onyx Cinder was intercepted by a pirate crew that had been keeping Jod prisoner. As pirate Captain Brutus walked up the entry ramp, the minors grasped him in the cargo lift, promising to release him only if their demands were satisfied. With Brutus trapped in the claw, Jod approached him and shot him dead, assuming the leadership of the pirate crew.[3]

Behind the scenes

A cargo-lifting arm appeared in the live-action television series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, with several names used for the mechanism. In "Very Interesting, As an Astrogation Problem," the audio-description voice-over artist refers to it as a cargo-lifting arm,[4] only for Jod to call it a cargo lift moments later.[1] In addition, the voice-over artist uses the names cargo-loading claw arm in "You Have a Lot to Learn About Pirates"[5] and lift claw in "We're Gonna Be In So Much Trouble".[6]
