Bran Ath'Morath was a legendary Jedi Knight of the Jedi Order. At some point between around 5000 BBY and years before 1032 BBY, the Sith Lord Darth Caldoth attacked the Jedi temple on the astronomical object Bathoris, killing many Jedi. Ath'Morath engaged Caldoth in a duel, allowing other Jedi to rally and force Caldoth to retreat. Years later, under the influence of the Nightsisters of the planet Dathomir, Caldoth attacked the city Pundith on the world Kizan to lure Ath'Morath away from Bathoris and defeat him. After a long duel on Kizan, Caldoth deliberately impaled himself on Ath'Morath's lightsaber and took advantage of his shocked reaction to behead him.

Biography

Duels with Darth Caldoth

According to legend, Bran Ath'Morath was a Jedi Knight of the Jedi Order.[2] At some point, Ath'Morath was the owner of an ancient plasma shield that had been passed between Jedi for centuries.[3] At some point between around 5000 BBY and years before 1032 BBY,[1] the Sith Lord Darth Caldoth became aware of a rare fragment of a fresco that related to the ancients and their use of the Force that had been uncovered and transferred to the Jedi temple on the astronomical object Bathoris, where Ath'Morath was stationed. In order to acquire the artifact, Caldoth launched an attack on the temple. Caldoth killed many Jedi Temple Guards and several Jedi Knights, but Ath'Morath was able to hold his ground and repel Caldoth from the temple's inner sanctum. He then kept the Sith locked in a duel until more Jedi were able to rally and force him to retreat.[2]

Following the battle, the Nightsisters, witches from[2] the planet[4] Dathomir who were enemies of Caldoth, enacted a ritual to allow the Nightsister Zeldin to influence the thoughts of Caldoth.[2] At some point by 1032 BBY,[1] after multiple failed attempts to cause Caldoth's death through manipulating his thoughts, the Nightsisters performed another ritual that granted them a vision of Ath'Morath's lightsaber being run through Caldoth, and so Zeldin inspired in him a desire to destroy Ath'Morath. Caldoth soon created a plan to attack the world Kizan to lure Ath'Morath away from Bathoris.[2]

After Ath'Morath received word that Caldoth had destroyed the city Pundith on Kizan, he and three other Jedi traveled there to face him. Caldoth quickly dealt with the other three Jedi, but he was unable to defeat Ath'Morath. They fought throughout the city, dueling on rooftops, in alleys, and in the ruins of buildings. By dusk, both Ath'Morath and Caldoth had begun to tire. Realizing that the only way he could defeat Ath'Morath was to surprise him, Caldoth lowered his lightsaber and thrust himself forward, deliberately piercing himself through the shoulder with Ath'Morath's lightsaber. Ath'Morath was shocked by what Caldoth had done, which allowed the Sith, who had anticipated Ath'Morath's reaction, to behead him. Zeldin, who was watching the duel from Dathomir, screamed in frustration upon seeing Ath'Morath's death and then attempted to fully seize control of Caldoth's mind, but Caldoth, who had been aware of her influence, instead trapped her inside his mind.[2]

Legacy

By around 379 BBY,[5] Jedi Master Silandra Sho, who had become the owner of the plasma shield once owned by Ath'Morath, told her Padawan Rooper Nitani stories of legendary Jedi who had previously possessed the shield, including Ath'Morath.[3] Around that year,[5] Nitani recalled the story she had heard of Ath'Morath fighting Caldoth while she was searching for the shield as part of her Jedi Trials.[3]

Powers and abilities

As a Jedi, Bran Ath'Morath was Force-sensitive. He was skilled in combat and was more powerful than Darth Caldoth, who was only able to defeat Ath'Morath by surprising him.[2]

Equipment

Ath'Morath wielded a yellow-bladed lightsaber[2] and at some point owned an ancient plasma shield.[3]

Behind the scenes

Bran Ath'Morath first appeared in flashbacks in the short story "The Gilded Cage," which was published in the 2020 short story collection Dark Legends, written by George Mann.[2]

Notes and references

  1. 1.0 1.1 1.2 The events of "The Gilded Cage" include Darth Caldoth as a Sith Lord known by the Jedi Order. Therefore, the events of the story must take place after the formation of the Sith and before the Jedi believed the Sith to be defeated. As Star Wars: Timelines dates those events to around 5000 BBY and 1032 BBY, respectively, the latest part of the story, which includes Ath'Morath's death on Kizan, must take place between those years, and Caldoth's attack on Bathoris, which occurs years earlier, must take place between around 5000 BBY and years before 1032 BBY.

During the events of The High Republic: Quest for Planet X, which Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia dates to 382 BBY, Nitani is fifteen years old. Therefore, "Shield of the Jedi" must take place around 379 BBY.
