Darth Caldoth was a Force-sensitive Duros male[2] Dark Lord of the Sith.[1] At one point, Darth Caldoth wrote a book titled The Bestiary of Darth Caldoth, which mentioned various Sith warbeasts such as the veergundark.[3]
Darth Caldoth eventually gained a Sith apprentice, the Twi'lek Ry Nymbis. At one point he used his own lightsaber when he traveled to Simoth and when reunited with his apprentice Ry Nymbis Caldoth killed his own apprentice with a Sith ritual that turned the young Twi'lek's body into stone.[2]
There was a legend about Caldoth coming into conflict with the Nightsisters of Dathomir after stealing a pod of a buried Nightsister. The coven member Zeldin was chosen to practice magick in order to seek revenge against Darth Caldoth. Zeldin reached out telepathically to influence the Sith Lord, however, Darth Caldoth was aware of her presence, and trapped Zeldin in a cage in his own mind.[4]
Biography
Betrayal
Darth Caldoth eventually gained a Sith apprentice named Ry Nymbis, and they were considered the two most powerful individuals in the galaxy at one point. Caldoth killed his own apprentice with a Sith ritual that turned the person's body into stone when he felt Nymbis was going to betray him. With the ritual, Nymbis was trapped in an eternal nightmare.[2]
Nightsister conflict
There was a legend about Caldoth's search for Force powers leading him into conflict with the Nightsisters of Dathomir, after stealing a pod of a buried Nightsister. The adept coven member Zeldin was chosen to practice magicks in order to seek revenge against Darth Caldoth, reaching out telepathically to influence the Sith Lord, including the encounter with his apprentice Nymbis. Later, when on her final attempt, Zeldin realized that Darth Caldoth was aware of her mental presence, and trapped the Nightsister in a cage in his own mind, occasionally remembering her presence.[4]
Battle on Kizan
According to legend, Darth Caldoth was a rival to Jedi Master Bran Ath'Morath. Darth Caldoth would lure the Jedi into a battle on the planet Kizan by destroying the key city of Pundith. While the battle remained equally matched, Caldoth purposefully allowed Ath'Morath's lightsaber to pierce himself through the shoulder, beheading the Jedi while he was still shocked at what Caldoth had done.[4]
Personality and traits
Darth Caldoth was a male Duro with green skin and yellow eyes. He wore black Sith robes with bracers and preferred to hang his lightsaber on his belt. As a Sith, he was a stern but visionary master, willing to wait several years while the seed of hatred grew in his apprentice. Furthermore, despite gaining power, Caldoth did not allow pride and arrogance to cloud his judgment and always kept his distance from his student, expecting betrayal on his part. They often recalled how he killed their own master and thus feared a similar fate for him. When Caldoth finally became convinced that Nimbis was planning to kill him, he did not reveal his emotions and continued to wait for many years, until he finally lured the student into a fatal trap. He subsequently used this incident as a reminder to those who would plot to betray him.
A master manipulator, Caldoth unraveled the Nightsisters' plot and used it to his advantage over the years. Having discovered their plan and captured Zeldin in his own mind, the Sith eventually took pleasure in her torment, smiling whenever he heard the witch's screams. In the history of the Galaxy, Caldoth remained a prominent researcher who wrote the book "The Bestiary of Darth Caldoth."
Skills and abilities
As a Sith Lord, Darth Caldoth was a formidable opponent in lightsaber combat, capable of defeating several Jedi at once, but his true danger lay in the secret knowledge that the Sith had accumulated over hundreds of years of their lives. His vast collection of artifacts and scrolls held many mysteries that only he himself had access to. Even though his student Ry Nimbis matched him in battle skills, he was afraid of his master, who always had an ace up his sleeve. Nimbis did not dare to openly attack him because he was afraid of the Sith rituals, which Caldoth mastered. Caldoth was also an excellent pilot, able to land a shuttle on the lunar surface, which was covered in storms and anomalies.
Behind the scenes
- "There's another little Easter Egg in Dooku: Jedi Lost, too. I talked to Cavan about the ancient Sith Lord I'd created for the story 'Gaze of Stone'—Darth Caldoth—and Cavan kindly put a reference to him and his work into his audio script. So there's a fair bit of cross-pollination going on there!"
- ―George Mann
Darth Caldoth was first mentioned in the 2019 canon audiobook Dooku: Jedi Lost, written by Cavan Scott.[3] The official spelling of his name was revealed in "Gaze of Stone," a story from Myths & Fables, a middle-grade novel by George Mann that was released on August 6, 2019.[2]
Caldoth's mention in Dooku: Jedi Lost was added by Scott after Mann told him about the character he had created for Myths & Fables, leading Scott to include a reference to Caldoth in his audiobook prior to his first appearance in Mann's novel.[5]
