- "My parents are bantha herders. They did not understand my interest in machines. But, they sold their most prized bantha calves so I could become a great engineer."
- ―Neeku Vozo, to Nenavakasa Nalor
Banthas were herded by bantha herders.
Bantha herders were individuals who herded banthas[2]—large furry mammals.[3] In 382 BBY,[4] the Evereni female Yana Ro mentally referred to a dockmaster at the outpost Port Haileap[5] on the Outer Rim planet Haileap[6] as a bantha herder while undertaking a job for[5] Elecia Zeveron—the Mother of the Path of the Open Hand cult.[7] During his mission on the Outer Rim planet Metagos[8] in 32 BBY,[9] Jedi Master Mace Windu called the Iotran Commander Nils Slithis a bantha herder while being chased by Slithis in a ship.[8]
The Kadas'sa'Nikto Neeku Vozo came from a long line of bantha herders,[2] which included his parents,[1] on[7] the Hutt Space planet[10] Kintan.[7] By 34 ABY,[11] they sold their most prized bantha calves so their son could become an engineer.[1] That year,[11] Vozo mentioned his parents' occupation as bantha herders and their selling of the calves to the Nikto Nenavakasa Nalor.[1]
Behind the scenes
Bantha herders were first mentioned in the current Star Wars canon in the twelfth episode of Resistance Rewind[2]—a series of short films that provided behind-the-scenes facts concerning episodes of the animated television series Star Wars Resistance[12]—which was posted on the official Star Wars YouTube channel on January 14, 2019. The short accompanied the Resistance episode "Bibo,"[2] the twelfth episode of the series' first season, which aired on January 13 of the same year.[13] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, bantha herders were first mentioned in The Star Wars Sourcebook, which was written by Bill Slavicsek and Curtis Smith and published in 1987 for use with West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game.[14]
