During the Cold War between the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire, the Jedi enclave on the planet Rhinnal was destroyed by the Red Reaper, the flagship of the xenophobic Sith Lord Darth Ikoral. The simultaneous deaths of so many Jedi affected Grand Master Satele Shan greatly, and the Republic dispatched the patrol frigate Toron Voq to Rhinnal in order to investigate when the Enclave did not respond to communications. The Toron Voq discovered the Red Reaper in the process of massacring the enclave, and it was barely able to send an image of the attacker before it was destroyed.[2]

Annihilation establishes that the Treaty of Coruscant collapsed approximately eighteen months prior, or in 3641 BBY, and as Act III occurs after the treaty's collapse, the act begins sometime between 3641 BBY and 3640 BBY.
