"And the Band Played On: The Band's Tale" is a short story by John Gregory Betancourt focusing on the Max Rebo Band picking the wrong time, place, and employer for a gig. It appears in the anthology Tales from Jabba's Palace, published by Bantam Spectra December 1995.
Plot summary
Evar Orbus and His Galactic Jizz-Wailers came to Tatooine expecting to perform in Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina. However, on their way to the cantina, they are attacked by Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes. Orbus is killed in the fight allowing Max Rebo to take over the band. After the cantina job busted, the new Max Rebo Band is desperate for a job.
Max, Sy Snootles, and Droopy McCool secure a gig at Jabba's Palace. The voraciously single-minded Max agrees to the band being paid in food. Sy agrees to spy on any conspirators plotting against Jabba. The band rides aboard the sail barge during the failed execution of Luke Skywalker and escapes the blast that consumes the floating pleasure craft. Max and Sy decide to carry on as the Max Rebo Duo, while Droopy wanders into the desert to find others of his kind.
Continuity
Because this story was published before the release of the Special Edition of Return of the Jedi (1997), the expanded Max Rebo Band was absent from the tale, and the musical ensemble was merely a trio.[2]
