Wookieepedia:Status Article Nominations Awards/2022

Hello all, and welcome to the inaugural, 2022 edition of Wookieepedia Status Article Nomination Awards!

Over the recent couple of years, Wookieepedia's status article nominations system—which includes Featured article, Good article, and Comprehensive article nominations processes—has experienced a tremendous growth, including a surge in the numbers of nominations, nominators, and reviewers, as well as the creation by Cade Calrayn of the beyond-useful JocastaBot and the various features she offers to the SAN process. All this inspired us, Dani and Imperators, to implement Status Article Nomination Awards—a fun new tradition of annually celebrating Wookieepedians' achievements and encouraging more of the friendly competition many of us have come to enjoy.

Judging the quality of status article contributions is obviously quite a difficult task :) so (for now?) we're mostly going to focus on celebrating their quantity instead—but along quite a few axes and in multiple different categories, as you'll see below!

How was all of this put together?

Starting three-to-four months ago, we set about collecting the data on the status article nominations that were started in the year 2022. First off, Plume Tray and Cade greatly helped our task by scraping the source code of archived nomination pages. After that, Imperators wrote a stellar program for converting said code into usable data that we could manage on a spreadsheet. Finally, Dani put their impressive spreadsheet wizardry skills to work in order to create a dynamic system that takes input data on nominations and in return gives us statistical data of the most various sorts on the nominators' contributions in 2022. "Input data on nominations" here refers to the aforementioned scraping of source code as well as careful monitoring of both the SAN archiving process and the management of the status article portfolios of WookieeProjects. For the record, the data that is used in this year's SAN Awards is up-to-date until January 9, 2023.

An important factor that had to be considered was that nominators who are not part of the Inquisitorius and AgriCorps status article review panels are limited to only having four active Featured article nominations and four active Good article nominations at the same time, respectively. That means that any competition in the quantity of status articles promoted between Inqs/ACs and non-Inqs/non-ACs is prone to running into issues related to objective comparison, so we had to separate these two groups of users early on when determining the most productive nominators. For the purposes of practicality, however, users promoted to membership of the review panels during the year in question (for example, Braha'tok enthusiast became an AC in 2022) were counted as panel members for that entire year instead of their contributions being separated into two parts. In addition, we also decided to disqualify from the competition any users who are blocked at this time.

5. Women (October 30, 2022)—which has the mission of both improving Wookieepedia's articles on women, both in-universe and real-world ones, and supporting the women editing Wookieepedia.

This year, the total number of first-place awards is 296.

"Most Valuable Nominator"

Just for fun :P we've also determined our two "Most Valuable Nominators" (MVN), which is a meta-award for ranking high in the above awards lists.

Every placement above is taken to have a corresponding point value: each third-place is worth 1 point, second-places give 2 points each, and 3 points are awarded for each first-place. In addition, the award for the Longest article is worth an additional 1 point.

Reviewing your own data

Interested in seeing the data for your own status article nominations? To allow nominators to review their numbers in full, we have created this tool.

In order to access it (and let others do so at the same time!), please follow the link and then in the top menu of the Google Sheets spreadsheet that appears click File > Make a copy. In the Year in Review spreadsheet, you can type in your Wookieepedia username in the yellow cell A2 and the year the data for which you wish to review in the yellow cell B2 If you leave the username field blank, the tool shows the total data for all nominators that year. Please note that for now the tool only has data from 2022, although we plan on expanding that.

Future plans, feedback, and questions

Phew! As can be imagined, putting all of this together and polishing it all in the last three-to-four months of the year was quite a challenge! Which unfortunately meant that some of the many ideas for the awards that we brainstormed had to be left on the drawing board.

• Among the most significant of those were awards for status article nomination reviewers—those sadly turned out to be just a bit more technically challenging than the ones for nominators.
• We're also interested in expanding the SAN data system not only forward in time, but backward as well, with it ideally coming to serve as a comprehensive source of statistics of Wookieepedia's status article nomination process over the years of its existence.

No worries, though—we're full of intention to keep working on these and other features and find a way to implement them in the Status Article Nomination Awards in the next and following years!

• I pitched this idea last year in June but didn't receive many reactions. I re-pitched it again on October 25 of 2022, at a more appropriate time I felt, and got a lot of positive responses. So I moved forward with the idea, creating the template award and getting my friend to help me create a “medal.” Shortly after I began bringing my dream to reality, Imperators happened upon me covered in duct tape. Imperators contained whatever chaos was manifesting around me and helped direct me to more focused goals/ideas. I mean this with 100% certainty: the scope of this endeavor would have paled in comparison to where it is now (Or the whole thing may have crashed and burned) without Imp's knowledge, guidance, mentorship, position, and friendship. Imp is truly a force of nature. My other Wook activities basically went on the back burner for this whole event, but Imp did all of his normal activities and so much more while really lifting this project on his shoulders. I am so thankful to have worked so closely with this genius of a man over the past few months. Thank you Imp for putting up with me bouncing off the walls. • Although I was aware this was in the works, I had no idea of the sheer scope of it, and I'm so proud of you both and so impressed with this whole thing!!! I hope you find a way to do reviewers in 2023 because that would be really excellent to acknowledge, I think. And I promise we will spend 2023 coming up with a good tagline for the Women award, even though Dani has forbidden it from just being a picture of Carrie Fisher flipping the bird. • Dani was telling me in DMs on Discord about it for a couple months and shared some of the data they and Imp collected, so I knew in advance that it was more than just the top nominators of each type of status article. But even having been sorta privy to the scope, I was still blown away by how thorough the two of them had been in creating award categories and ensuring that everyone was awarded appropiately. Dani was constantly DM'ing me about how hype they was before it dropped last week so I myself was getting hyped up, but I was still very impressed and surprised by how hard Dani and Imp had worked on this.
