Vergesso Prime, otherwise known as the Vergesso Asteroid or simply Vergesso, was the largest of the Vergesso Asteroids, situated in the third belt of the Lybeya system.[2]
Description
The planetoid had a rather flat shape and consisted mostly of lead and Nickel-iron, meaning that sensor scans could not penetrate to its interior. The Base installed several crater-like hangars, some of which led inside to the capital ship docking cluster of the Facility. The surface also had a network of turbolasers and laser cannons on its surface, intended to stop runners, attempting to leave without paying fees; and defend the Base against ambushes.[2]
History
The asteroid was first used by Dr. Ecile Vergesso who installed a survey base on the "western" hemisphere to study the system. After that project, the base was taken by a band of pirates.[2]
It was patrolled by squadrons of TIE/LN starfighters because of high pirate activity. The Rebel Alliance hired Han Solo to plant an EMP device in a shipment at Vergesso heading for Corulag to disable the Fleet there. The intention was to learn more about the Imperial Superweapon, but also set a chain reaction for the rescue of Admiral Gial Ackbar.
By the time of the Galactic Civil War, the Base was used by an exchange point for smugglers which grew to a shadowport of Transportation. That time, the base extended to the interior of the asteroid, impervious to casual scans. Each of the poles of the planetoid housed a sensor array. Tractor beams kept a ring formation of companion asteroids around it, hiding the Asteroid Hangars.[2]
A joint Ororo/Rebel Alliance installation, the base was wiped out by the Imperial Star Dreadnought Executor, and escorting Imperial starships.
