"You're an enemy of the First Order—"
"Yes, I am."
―Jace Rucklin and Venisa Doza while Doza escaped First Order custody[1]

Venisa Doza was a human female pilot who served in the Rebel Alliance and the Resistance, and the wife of Captain Imanuel Doza and mother of Torra Doza. After persuading her future husband to defect from the Galactic Empire during the Galactic Civil War, Venisa and her husband settled down as the owners of the refueling station Colossus on Castilon in the Mid Rim. However, at the beginning of the Cold War, when it became clear that the Imperial successor state the First Order was emerging as a serious threat to the galaxy at large, Venisa left her home and joined the Resistance, a paramilitary organization set up by Rebel hero General Leia Organa. Venisa saw her family once a year on Torra's birthday, but after war formally broke out between the First Order and Resistance, an attempted rendezvous with the Colossus, on the run in the Outer Rim, failed. Venisa was then captured by the First Order before escaping, missing her daughter's 16th birthday.

Despite missing this pivotal moment in her daughter's life, Venisa was not separated from her family for long. In command of Jade Squadron, she returned to the Colossus seeking assistance for a mission to rescue stranded Resistance recruits on Dantooine. The mission was a success despite the loss of one shuttle to enemy fire, and Jade Squadron were granted a temporary berth on the Colossus. Venisa later led the defence of the platform during a skirmish in the Barabesh system, resulting in the destruction of the Thunderer.

Biography

From Rebellion to Resistance

"Look, the future's uncertain, but we'll face whatever comes our way, no matter how far apart we are or how often we see one another. What's important is we're a family, and nothing can change that."
―Hologram recording of Venisa Doza speaking to Imanuel Doza[1]

Venisa, a human female, was a young woman during the Galactic Civil War,[5] in which she fought for the Alliance to Restore the Republic as a starfighter pilot alongside fellow human Jarek Yeager. She met an Imperial officer named Imanuel Doza,[1] with whom she fell in love. She eventually convinced Imanuel to defect from the Empire, after which the two married[2] In 18 ABY,[6] the Dozas had a daughter, Torra Doza.[1] As Torra grew, Venisa taught her daughter how to fly and affectionally referred to her as "wingmate."[3]

At some point during the First Order's rise in power, Venisa spoke with Imanuel on the threat the regime posed to the galaxy and that their family needed to be ready to combat it.[1] In 28 ABY, Leia Organa resigned from the Galactic Senate and founded the Resistance, a volunteer militia, after the New Republic refused to answer the growing threat of the First Order, a faction that worshiped the previous Empire.[7] Although Imanuel didn't want to be involved in another war, Venisa felt a responsibility to assist and left her family aboard the Colossus,[1] a refueling station on the planet Castilon,[8] to join the Resistance, something that Imanuel, Torra, and Yeager kept secret.[1] She was the Commander for Jade Squadron.[3]

Resistance missions

"Today's the one day I could always count on seeing my mom, and the three of us got to feel like a family again."
―Torra Doza on her yearly meetup with her mother.[1]

At some point during her flight career, Venisa visited the planets[9] Bakura and Lehon along with her co-pilot, the astromech droid Torch.[1] On one occasion, Doza and Torch escaped the First Order Security Bureau Agent Terex.[5] From 28 ABY to 34 ABY,[10] on Torra's birthday, Imanuel and Torra traveled away from the Colossus to an undisclosed location to meet with Venisa.[1]

Unsweet Sixteen

"We found their signal beacon, Torch... but that's definitely not the Colossus."
―Venisa Doza to Torch[1]
"Father, we can't wait for her any longer."
"All ships, fall back. Prepare to jump to hyperspace."
―Torra and Imanuel Doza[1]

On Torra's sixteenth birthday[1] in 34 ABY,[10] Imanuel Doza captained the Colossus through space as the First Order pursued the station,[1] wishing to capture the station for use in their war against the New Republic.[8] He brought the station to the Outer Rim and activated a signal beacon with the intention of meeting up with Venisa. The Resurgent-class Star Star Destroyer Thunderer, under the command of Agent Tierny and Commander Pyre, tracked the beacon however and arrived first. The Order engaged the station's defenses—the Ace Squadron[1] composed of skilled racing pilots, which included Torra[8]—in battle as Imanuel pondered where Venisa was. With shields nearly depleted and at the behest of Torra, Imanuel gave the order for the Ace Squadron to return to the Colossus and fled through hyperspace.[1]

Shortly after the Colossus jumped to hyperspace to escape the Thunderer's forces, Venisa, piloting her modified X-wing, and Torch exited hyperspace near the signal beacon, surrounded by TIE fighters. Doza engaged in combat with the First Order TIEs as she fired two ion torpedos, disabling two TIEs. Doza closed her X-wing's S-foils to flee the Star Destroyer but was caught in a tractor beam. Doza denies showing off and critiques Torch for letting the ship get caught. The human offered the droid two options, mimicing their times spent on Bakura or Lehon–the two ultimately choosing to play dead. The ship's systems were sabotaged[1] and Torch masked all signs of functionality[11] to make himself seem sabotaged as well.[1]

Once her X-wing had landed in the hangar of the Thunderer, a First Order stormtrooper shoved a portable staircase next to the X-wing, prompting Doza to threaten the trooper. The trooper trained their blaster rifle on Doza, insisting she raise her hands. Doza followed the command and exited her ship, following the stormtrooper down the stairs. Agent Tierny arrived on the scene, requesting to know who the X-wing pilot was. Doza quipped for Tierny to introduce herself first. Tierny then ordered the pilot to be arrested and her flight data recorder to be obtained and examined. A stormtrooper reported that both the ship's systems and droid had been fried, to which Doza feigned ignorance of how that happened. Tierny assured Doza they had other ways to obtain information from her and then instructed the pilot to be taken to the detention bay. A Stormtrooper officer lead Doza away, followed by another trooper. Two stormtroopers escorted Doza as they passed the two pilots Jace Rucklin and Tamara Ryvora. Ryvora thought Doza seemed familiar, which Rucklin disagreed with.[1]

Meanwhile on the Colossus

"This isn't like before, Torra. The First Order's hunting us. You saw how fast they tracked our beacon."
"But there's no answer on her comlink! I'm jumping back."
"Absolutely not. It's too dangerous."
―Imanuel and Torra Doza[1]
"Kaz, we're not looking for the entire Resistance. We're trying to find one of their pilots. My mother."
―Torra Doza[1]

Torra is >:< cause the aces suck. Torra and her father discuss Venisa's absence. Kaz barges in trying to help. Torra informs him about having a kickass mom.

Yeager removes Kaz from the room and urges him to keep a secret. Kaz questions why he never knew. Yeager talks about the Rebellion and Imanuel's defection.

Escaping the Thunderer

"Forget the lies they've filled your head with and tell me why you're really here. What is it you want? All they want is power. You know this isn't where you belong, Tamara."
"How do you know my name? Who are you?"
"My name is Venisa Doza."
―Venisa Doza and Tamara Ryvora speak while Doza is in a detention cell.[1]
"I said drop the blaster, Resistance scum. Now!"
"You didn't say please."
―Jace Rucklin and Venisa Doza[1]

Later, as Doza lounged in her cell, Ryvora visited the captured Resistance Commander. Ryvora wished to interogate Doza to discover who she was, much to Doza's surprise. Doza urged Ryvora to leave the First Order and when Ryvora refused, the Resistance pilot urged her to be wary of the First Order. She then revealed she knew who Ryvora was, and informed Ryvora of her own identity, wife and mother to Imanuel and Torra Doza respectively. Suddenly, Torch, who had stopped playing dead and sought out Doza's cell, shocked Ryvora from behind, knocking the First Order recruit out.[1]

Back on the Colossus. Torra tries to sneak to save Venisa.

Doza escaped from her cell and began escorting the now cuffed Ryvora through the halls at blasterpoint. Torch lead the others through the halls and knocked-out a Stormtrooper with by electrocuting them. Ryvora informed Doza her plan to leave the ship was futile, but Doza assured the recruit they would both be leaving the Star Destroyer, to return her to the Colossus. When Ryvora rejected the station as her home, Doza once again appealed to her, explaining her husband was once in her position before he saw the Empire for what it was. She pleaded that running away from pain did not help the pain go away.[1]

Just like that time with Terex

"You're only making things worse for yourself."
[Venisa scoffs] "I've escaped tougher spots than this. Don't worry about me."
―Tamara Ryvora and Venisa Doza[1]
"We need one of those TIEs. What do you think?"
[Sorch beeps]
"Oh, like how we escaped Terex? I like it. Go light 'em up."
―Venisa Doza and Scorch.[1]

Doza scolded Torch for the route felt too long and she was worried the First Order would soon notice she was missing. Jace Rucklin announces his presence and holds Resistance members at blasterpoint, demanding Doza drop her weapon. The pilot used Ryvora as a human shield and refused the order. Ryvora pleaded to settle things peacefully but neither Doza or Rucklin relent. Doza taunted Rucklin to shoot her through Ryvora but when the cadet showed his inability to Doza tried to convince him the First Order to defect from the First Order. While Doza distracted Rucklin, Scorch used his scomp link on a nearby panel and closed the blast door, cutting Rucklin off from the Resistance group.[1]

Doza insulted Rucklin's intelligence after alluding his capture. As alarms began to sound aboard the Thunderer, Doza and Scorch resumed their escape, with Ryvora still in cuffs. As the team avoided stormtroopers they advanced until coming upon a locked blast door to Bay 2. The Resistance pilot reminded Torch that unlocking doors was his job. Ryvora warned Doza that she was in trouble, but Doza assured her not to worry about her. When Ryvora confessed she was more worried about Torra, Venisa stated that leaving Torra was hard but her actions were to keep her daughter safe.[1]

Doza and Ryvora's conversation was interrupted by stormtroopers discovering them and engaging in blaster fire, upsetting Doza. The Resistance pilot successfully incapacitated two troopers and shielded Ryvora from fire, urging Torch to get the door open. After Torch cut the troopers off and opened the door to the hangar, the trio snuck in and hid behind some crates. Doza and Torch briefly conversed about acquiring a TIE fighter before agreeing to escape like they once did against Terex[1] of the First Order Security Bureau.[5] Then Torch went off to cause an explosion under Doza's orders.[1]

Personality and traits

"Look, leaving my daughter behind wasn't easy, but I'm doing this for her, so she can live her life in a galaxy at peace. That's something I'll never stop fighting for."
―Venisa Doza, to Tamara Ryvora[1]
"Doza refused to be part of another war, but Venisa was determined to fight back. She's as fearless as they come."
―Jarek Yeager, to Kazuda Xiono[1]
"We all make mistakes we have to live with, don't we?"
―Venisa Doza[1]

Venisa and Torch aboard their X-wing

Venisa Doza was both personally brave, fighting in two wars for the sake of the galaxy, and laid-back, showing no concern upon her capture by Agent Tierny. She was also a good judge of character, realizing that Ryvora's loyalty to the First Order was on shaky ground and that the girl could be swayed. Venisa wanted to make things better, both for people she knew — such as her eventual husband Imanuel and their daughter — and the galaxy at large, for which cause she left her family to join the Resistance. She also shared many character traits with her daughter Torra, to the extent that upon having her described to him, Kazuda Xiono, a Resistance spy who had never met Venisa, immediately commented to Yeager that she reminded him of Torra.[1]

Doza was also a capable leader and speaker who was able to motivate her subordinates. As an optimist, Doza encouraged her pilots to focus on their achievements rather than dwell on their losses.[3]

Skills and abilities

"So how do we play this? Like we did on Bakura? Or like that time on Lehon?"
―Venisa Doza making a plan with Torch[1]

Venisa was a highly skilled pilot and combatant, capable of escaping from forces of the First Order, such as Agent Tierny's Star Destroyer or the forces of the rogue Agent Terex, with only Torch to assist her. As part of this, she was good at making up plans on the fly, such as after her capture during the failed birthday rendezvous.[1]

Doza was also competent leader who was able to inspire confidence and morale in her pilots. She was also a skilled combat pilot and shot down several TIE fighters including Lieutenant Galek's fighter.[3]

Equipment

"I can't believe you're still flying around in this old rust bucket, Venisa. It has seen better days."
―Jarek Yeager critiquing Venisa Doza's X-wing.[3]

On the side of Doza's helmet was her surname, "Doza," written in a Domabesh. Her blaster was a variation of the DL-44 heavy blaster pistol.[5]

Behind the scenes

"Venisa, along with Torch and her X-wing, were designed to look like she's been using the same equipment since the Return of the Jedi era, as she was a fighter pilot at a young age. Same as Torra."
