On March 18, 2021, StarWars.com posted an article announcing a series of variant covers for the current run of Marvel Star Wars comic series for Pride Month. The variant covers were illustrated by gay and transgender artists and were a tribute to LGBTQIA+ characters in the galaxy of Star Wars. Variant covers were announced for the thirteenth issue of the 2020 comic series Star Wars: Darth Vader; the first issue of the 2021 series Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters; the thirteenth issue of the 2020 series Star Wars: Bounty Hunters; the sixth issue of the 2021 series Star Wars: The High Republic; the fourteenth issue for the 2020 series Star Wars; and the eleventh issue of the 2020 series Star Wars: Doctor Aphra.[1] The covers featured Imperial commander Rae Sloane illustrated by J.J. Kirby; archaeologist Chelli Lona Aphra by Babs Tarr; Alphabet Squadron leader Yrica Quell by Jacopo Camagni; Jedi twins Ceret and Terec by Javier Garrón; Lando Calrissian by Stephen Byrne; and smuggler Sana Starros by Jan Bazaldúa respectively.[2] The article revealed Bazaldua's cover for Doctor Aphra #11[1] while the other covers were revealed later in the year on May 7 in a follow-up article. The follow-up article also revealed the event's logo, a classic Star Wars logo accompanied by a rainbow tail, and that each comic's title would receive a rainbow burst treatment.[2]
