About Me

I enjoy Star Wars, but mainly the Expanded Universe. Nothing against the films, but they just seem bland, simplistic, and predictable when set against the EU. I could go my whole life without watch another Star Wars film, but I cannot imagine my life without the EU novels. The best thing about the films is that they gave rise to the novels. To a much lesser extent, I also like Harry Potter, The Heroes of Olympus, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Kane Chronicles, Arrowverse, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One thing I have noticed and enjoyed is that Luke and Mara are the Star Wars counterparts to Percy and Annabeth.

Oh, come now, when have I ever made anything easy for you?

"You are so not making this easy.
I am never, ever going to make things easy for you, Seaweed Brain. Get used to it.

My Thoughts After Disney

The loss of the Expanded Universe was the worst part of Disney's taking over Star Wars. In my personal opinion, the New Jedi Order series was the best part of Star Wars. After reading those books, I stopped really liking the Star Wars that came before it, because the storylines just paled and seemed simplistic compared to the storylines of the New Jedi Order series and the series that came after (Dark Nest, Star Wars: Legacy of the Force, Fate of the Jedi, et cetera).

I found Jacen Solo, Vergere, Tahiri Veila, and the Yuuzhan Vong (particularly Onimi and Nom Anor) to be the best part of the entire series, perhaps tied with Luke and Mara. That is, in and of itself, why I don't really like the Star Wars that came before anymore - for me, Jacen Solo is Star Wars. What would Star Wars be without him? He is the only Star Wars character I truly connected with it.

The greatest part of what the New Jedi Order series did to Star Wars was Jacen and Vergere's new philosophy on the Force - that there was no dark side. When the old Jedi spoke of the dark side, it only referred to the darkness within themselves. I found that to be a much better take on Star Wars than what came before. It might not have been how George Lucas viewed the Force, but it was a much better in that way. In many ways, it reminded me of the main theme from Harry Potter - that it is our choices who make us who we really are, far more than our abilities. I definitely prefer the idea that Darth Vader made his own decisions over the idea that he was corrupted by some mystical force. I agree with Vergere that saying there is a dark side is just a manner of not wanting to take responsibility for your own actions.

Furthermore, I loved the idea that the New Jedi Order series left the Sith in the past. I was actually somewhat annoyed with the fact that the Legacy of the Force brought the Sith back into the present. Non-Sith villains like the Yuuzhan Vong or Abeloth I think are so much better. I completely disagree that the New Jedi Order series felt darker; it never did for me. I liked it better than the rather boring Star Wars books and films from before. What I think got too dark for me was the Legacy of the Force - the return of the Sith, the manner in which they dealt with a great character like Jacen, and Mara Jade's death.

I had no problem with their killing off Chewbacca and Anakin; not that I had anything against their characters, I just thought that was a necessary evil for the series. The only characters I felt were off-limits were Luke, Han, and Leia, which is exactly why I cannot stand The Force Awakens. I was a little angry about Mara's death, but after reading the Fate of the Jedi series I that was something that was needed for that storyline; it helped transform Luke into a Dumbledore-like figure with Ben as his Harry Potter (his protegee), which I don't think could have been done were Mara alive.

As you can probably tell, one of the main reasons I felt Star Wars got so much better the New Jedi Order series and on is because it embodied aspects from Harry Potter. I don't usually like science fiction, and the reason I like Star Wars is because I've always considered it fantasy, and the later books felt more like fantasy than the films and the earlier books, and that was a huge plus for it.

I'm sorry if this sounded like a bit of a rant, but the point when I really fell in love with Star Wars was after I read Vestor Prime, so when I get talking about the New Jedi Order series, I get really passionate. I cannot express just how much I adore the New Jedi Order series and even the three series that came after it. They are perfection. I'm aware that the New Jedi Order is highly controversial and heavily criticized, but, in my personal opinion, I believe that is the exact point when Star Wars got really good.
