The FarStar, formerly known as the Freedom's Messenger and the Renegade, was a Corellian Engineering Corporation CR90 corvette that was operational for almost sixty years. Launched around 52 BBY, the vessel was originally known as the Freedom's Messenger, and it served the Chandrilan government as a diplomatic vessel before being converted for military duty. Severely damaged during the Battle of Ord Torenze, the ship was forced to crash-land on the planet with the loss of all hands. Several years later, during the Galactic Empire's military build-up, the wreckage of the ship was recovered and repaired. Renamed as the Renegade, the ship was assigned to the 15th Deep Core Reserve Fleet, and came under the command of a young Imperial officer called Kentor Sarne.

Around 2 BBY, the Renegade was transferred to the Kathol Sector Imperial Fleet at the request of Kentor Sarne, who had been appointed as the region's Moff. The ship participated in the subjugation of the planet Charis, and was selected by Sarne to undergo a series of extensive modifications to perform as a long-range reconnaissance and attack ship. Berthed at a secret shipyard in the Sorbiss Valley on Kal'Shebbol, the Renegade underwent a massive refit, including the installation of a hangar bay to carry starfighters.

In 8 ABY, the New Republic liberated Kal'Shebbol. Following the death of Emperor Palpatine during the Battle of Endor, Sarne had withdrawn his sector from the Empire and established himself as a warlord. During his retreat from the planet, he was forced to leave the Renegade behind since the vessel was still being modified. The New Republic discovered and commandeered the vessel, renaming it the FarStar, and immediately assigned it to follow Sarne into the Kathol sector and neutralize any threat he may have posed to the stability of the region. However, the New Republic was unaware that, as part of the modifications to the vessel, Sarne had instituted several ways to track the vessel and monitor its progress.

For several months, the FarStar tracked Sarne through the Kathol sector, across the Marcol Void and into the Kathol Outback. Several times, the vessel was called upon to engage Imperial forces loyal to the warlord, or assist local communities to gain intelligence and navigational data. The FarStar also suffered the loss of its original commander, Captain Keleman Ciro, during a mission to the planet Kolatill, and the post was subsequently taken by First Officer Kaiya Adrimetrum. The FarStar followed Sarne through the treacherous Kathol Rift, finally arriving at the planet Kathol, the home of the mysterious DarkStryder.

During the Battle of Kathol, the FarStar was aided by vessels from the Bothan Combat Response Element and the Yvarema navy against the ships of Moff Sarne's forces. The corvette took severe damage during the engagement, and was unable to maintain orbit around the planet. Snared by the gravity well of Kathol, the vessel fell to the surface, impacting close to the Imperial Garrison that Sarne had established on the planet. The resulting explosion destroyed both the corvette and the garrison, and eliminated a large amount of the Imperial forces stationed on the surface.

Description

Modifications

The FarStar underwent several modifications during its lifetime. From diplomatic vessel to warship, from symbol of peace to weapon of terror. The biggest changes to the ship were instigated by Moff Sarne during the refitting of the ship at the Sorbiss Valley dockyards.

Armor

The armor of the FarStar was increased by at least two meters throughout the ship. This modification made the FarStar able to take more punishment than a standard Corellian corvette during combat operations.[1]

Communications

Sarne outfitted the FarStar with a high-powered subspace transceiver, boosted for a broadcast range of nearly one hundred light-years. The unit was installed to allow the crew of the ship to send regular updates to the Moff. A similar transceiver was located on Kal'Shebbol to allow Sarne to monitor the ship without linking to military and civilian networks.[1]

Landing bay and docking tubes

During Sarne's refit, he decided he wanted the corvette to have an internal flight deck to carry shuttles and TIE Interceptors. By the time of the liberation of Kal'Shebbol, the main deck, airlock and magnetic field generators had been installed. However, Imperial engineers had not fitted the necessary racks to hold the TIE Interceptors. Below the flight deck was the maintenance bay that would be used to service ground vehicles and starfighters.[1]

A main airlock large enough to transfer ground vehicles and large cargoes was situated on the starboard side of the ship, and three docking tubes allowed freighters and small ships to dock with the FarStar. The engineers adjusted the corvette's hyperspace signature in the engines to accommodate the new configuration.[1]

Sensors

Sarne's technicians outfitted the corvette with an enhanced tracking suite which effectively doubled the range of the ship's sensors. The FarStar could detect ships at longer ranges and learn about them before they were aware of the existance of the ship. The downside to the system was that it took up more space and drew more power than a regular suite.[1]

Weapons

The turbolasers on the FarStar were upgraded with a new "predict and pinpoint" system to assist the gunners. However, the FarStar's gunners disliked the new system, and had trouble adjusting to the new routine. The technicians insisted that the system would improve the hit-to-miss ratio, but the gunners wanted the standard targeting system reinstated.[1]

Operating conditions under New Republic control

Forced to launch on short notice on a mission of undetermined length, the FarStar was forced to operate below the normal operating conditions expected of a New Republic ship.

Droid complement

To assist in the operation of the FarStar, the ship had over one hundred droids assigned to it. Mainly R2 and R3 series astromechs, they assisted in astrogation and external maintenance operations. An R-97 Quartermaster droid oversaw the storage facilities onboard the ship, while the droid pool was run by a DD-19 "Overseer" labor pool droid. Medical services were supplemented by three 2-1B medical droids, and six K4 security droids were assigned to critical areas of the ship, including the command center, engineering, landing bay and armory. Forty R3 astromechs assist in the running of the vessel, with ten R2 models. Eight of the R2s were permanently assigned to the FarStar's contingent of X-wings. Ten SE4 servant droids and three J9 worker drones assisted in menial operations, and maintenance operations were assisted by twelve EG-6 power droids and seven WED-15 Treadwell droids. Six viper probe droids and six Q-Signal messenger drones rounded out the ship's droid complement and were used to maintain communications with the New Republic.[1]

Duty shifts

The crew of the FarStar operated in two shifts of twelve hours. Each crew member had a twelve hour "on duty" post, and, theoretically, twelve hours off for sleep, recreation, and personal time. Most "on duty" posts were full-time positions, while others were part-time posts where crew members split their time between one or more duties. Part-time posts were generally maintenance or checking performance levels. In addition to these posts, several "alert" posts were only manned during emergency situations, such as when the ship was reverting from hyperspace, entering orbit of a new world, or about to engage the enemy.[1]

Despite the oversized crew, the FarStar still had duties that had to be performed, but could not be handled during regular duty shifts or by droids. To combat this, Captain Ciro created "off-duty" posts that were manned during a crew member's "off-duty" time. Arranged in four hour shifts, they were generally menial tasks and rotated equally among the crew. Because of this, crew members continually faced sixteen hour shifts, or a twelve hour shift, four off-duty hours followed by a four hour off-duty post, then another four hours off-duty.[1]

Engineering

Much of the FarStar's internal circuitry was jury-rigged and hardware underwent custom modification to fit. A lot of the refit had to be done by the New Republic and civilian technicians, and given the twenty-eight hour launch window, the results were far from pretty. Cables, pipes and conduits criss-crossed the corridors, and the FarStar engineers continued to string wire and conduit wherever it was convienent. Everything was located in easy to access places so the technicians could get at them in an emergency.[1]

Oversized crew

The uncertain nature of the FarStar's mission called for a large crew, which included extra engineers and technicians, as well as scientists, computer specialists, pilots, and ground troops. The crew numbered around one hundred and twenty beings. With only thirty standard crew rooms, many crew members were forced to share bunkspace, a process known as "hot-bunking". Some crew, unable to adjust to this arrangement, decided to sleep on mats on the floor.[1]

Power conservation

Due to the need to conserve resources, many of the FarStar's systems were operated at reduced capacity. Storage bays and non-vital areas were sealed off, and crew quarters were at half-lighting, and corridor lighting was reduced to utilizing every other glowpanel. Heating ducts across the ship were closed off to conserve power; the droid repair bays, service bays, and food storage bins were cold enough cause crew members to see their own breath when they breathed.[1]

Storage

Many living quarters were hastily converted to storage areas to carry the vast supplies required by the FarStar. Any suitable open area was used to stack crates. The majority of stored components were technical items, such as computer components, spare parts for the support vehicles and vessels, engine parts and weapons. Food rations were also carried, but since the FarStar could reasonably expect to replenish their food and water stores, they were given lesser priority. High technology, on the other hand, was almost impossible to replace once the ship passed out of civilized space. The supplies were organized and regulated by a dedicated quartermaster droid.[1]

The FarStar also had several cold storage bays for the preservation of meat and liquids, and several fresh water tanks. Each fresh water tank had several baffles to reduce water motion during spaceflight. Standard procedure when landing on a planet was flushing out the water tanks and refilling them with a fresh supply to ensure water didn't go stale.[1]

Support vehicles

Starfighter complement

The FarStar carried twelve starfighters, the equivalent of a full squadron. Two different types were used; eight Incom Corporation T-65B X-wings, and four Republic Engineering Corporation Defenders. The unit was commanded by Lieutenant Ranna Gorjaye. Six pilots were on duty during each twelve hour shift. Two pilots were on patrol duty - either in space, or in the hangar with their fighters. The other four pilots were in the ready room. Patrols usually consisted of a two ship element of either X-wings or Defenders. Different ships were rarely mixed for patrol duty.[1]

Shuttles and transports

The FarStar carried two support ships to assist in its mission. The New Republic supplied a Telgorn Corporation Aegis-class combat shuttle, and mechanic Brophar Tofarain supplied his own ship, the Muvon for use during the mission.[1] The Muvon would later be stolen by the treacherous Secutiry Officer, Gorak Khzam,[6] and a replacement ship, a battered YT-1300 freighter was recoved from the Q'Maere Research Facility. Tofarain restored it and named it the Muvon II.[3]

Ground vehicles

The FarStar carried several ground vehicles for reconnaissance duties and ground missions. They were usually transported to the surface using the Aegis shuttle, or deployed from the FarStar via the ship's vehicle ramp. The corvette carried six Mobquet Overracer speeder bikes, modified with sound dampeners, sensor bafflers and a light laser cannon. They were primarily used for recon and perimeter patrol of temporary bases. Two Aratech SRV-1s were used by the crew as troop transports and cargo haulers during ground missions. Finally, four ULAVs were used for limited combat missions and fire support.[1]

Sarne's secrets

Since Sarne never intended to command the ship himself, he had several "back-doors" incorporated into the ship's systems as security measures to ensure he had control over the ship at all times.

Droid programming override

A small routine was written into the astromech droid interface that was capable of rewriting a droid's basic programming. R2 and R3-series droids were the most likely affected units, and they were capable of acts of sabotage.[1]

Communications "deeplink"

Sarne knew that the delicate nature of the ship's mission would be tempting for any ship commander, and knew better than to trust any commanding officer. Consequently, Sarne added a program to the communications system to broadcast the ships' location during each and every downshift. At a random time between 2200 and 0330 hundred hours, it sent a blip of data to Sarne informing him of the ship's location and heading, allowing the Moff to track the FarStar throughout the Kathol Sector.[1]

Computer system

The FarStar's computer system was bugged with several programs designed to cause minor and major problems to the crew of the ship. The malfunctions ranged from simply turning off lighting in certain areas, to initiating a power surge in the hyperdrive engines, rendering them useless. Fearing that the ship might be used against him by a treacherous Imperial commander, he had them installed to enforce control over the vessel. The programs were designed to activate if the ship didn't receive a command code from Sarne every ten days. With the ship in New Republic hands, Sarne failed to send the code at the correct time, and the programs became active during the hunt for the Moff.[1]

History

Freedom's Messenger

Commissioned circa 52 BBY as the Freedom's Messenger, the ship served as a diplomatic vessel for the Chandrilan government. Constructed at the Corellian Engineering Corporation shipyards, it was a luxurious vessel with palatial decorations and catered to every need of its passengers. Servant droids were regularly cleaned and maintained, live professional entertainment was provided every night, and Human attendants served each and every delegation.[1]

The Freedom's Messenger became a symbol of peace for the Galactic Republic. The treaty inducting the Marzoon Confederation into the Republic was signed aboard the ship, and it transported a dozen Jedi to quell the Vaykaaris Uprising. Darker times forced the Freedom's Messenger to change roles. The corvette was extensively refitted for military service with the diplomatic suites being replaced by weapons mounts and storage bays. Recreation halls became barracks and droid bays housed weapon repair stations and recharge points. The Freedom's Messenger served the Republic admirably as a warship, and its hull bore the scars to prove it.[1]

The Freedom's Messenger was the flagship of a fleet during the Battle of Ord Torrenze. The planet was blockaded by enemy warships, and an orbital bombardment rained down on the surface. Millions tried to escape, but the escape route was blocked, and thousands of evacuation ships were helpless before the turbolasers of enemy ships. The Freedom's Messenger led its fleet into battle, driving straight for the enemy with all turbolasers blazing. The assault caused enough confusion for the evacuation ships to escape the planet. Near to the end of the battle, the Freedom's Messenger suffered a power core overload. With its crew dying of radiation poisoning, the Freedom's Messenger fell out of orbit and crashed into the planet below. It was remembered as a proud ship that had saved millions of lives.[1]

Renegade

Years after the Battle of Ord Torrenze, during the Galactic Empire's military build-up, the wreck of the Freedom's Messenger was recovered from its resting place. Renamed the Renegade and refitted for combat duty, it was assigned to the 15th Deep Core Reserve Fleet under the command of Kentor Sarne, a young Imperial officer. The ship distinguished itself in a half dozen campaigns against pirates, and hit-and-run attacks against Rebel Alliance supply depots.[1]

The Renegade continued to serve in the 15th Deep Core Reserve Fleet until 2 BBY, when it was transferred to the Kathol Sector Imperial Fleet at the request of Kentor Sarne, who had recently been installed as the sector's Moff. It played a prominent role in the subjugation of the planet Charis, and enforced Imperial control across the Kathol sector. After the death of Emperor Palpatine at the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, Sarne quietly withdrew the Kathol sector from the Empire. The Renegade was subsequently used to terrorize and intimidate the population of the sector in Sarne's name.[1]

In 7 ABY, the Renegade was transferred out of active service and sent to Sarne's private dockyard in the Sorbiss Valley on Kal'Shebbol, the sector capital. It underwent an extensive refit, intended for use as a long-range exploration vessel to retrieve powerful ancient artifacts known as DarkStryder technology from across the sector. Sarne's technicians added several modifications, including an internal flight deck for TIE Interceptors, and employed the Keiffler Brothers, experienced slicers from the planet Pembric II, to hardwire programming trapdoors into the corvette's systems for future exploitation. Sarne would later order the Brothers to be killed after their work had been completed.[7] The ship was almost completed when the New Republic liberated Kal'Shebbol in 8 ABY. Sarne was forced to retreat from the planet, and left the ship behind during the evacuation.[1]

FarStar

New Republic forces discovered the location of the ship in the wake of the liberation of Kal'Shebbol due to information provided by former Imperial officer Jessa Dajus, who claimed to be a shuttle pilot who had been on the wrong end of one of Sarne's loyalty purges. In reality, she was an Intelligence officer with the rank of colonel.[8] Lieutenant Judder Page, commander of Page's Commandos and senior New Republic figure on the planet, authorized a mission to hunt Sarne down. During the Battle of Kal'Shebbol, Page and his team had attempted to apprehend Sarne in his headquarters, but failed due to the Moff's employment of DarkStryder technology against them. Fearful that this new, exotic weaponry was a danger to the New Republic, Page convinced his commanders to allow the mission to proceed. However, due to a lack of New Republic resources, was forced to use the modified corvette as the primary mission vehicle.[8]

Renamed as the FarStar, the ship was commanded by Captain Keleman Ciro, a member of Page's Commandos who had demonstrated a degree of resistance to the effects of DarkStryder technology. Crewed with a mixture of New Republic personnel, civilians and fringers from Kal'Shebbol, they were given barely twenty-eight hours to ready the ship, and converted much of the interior space into storage bays for the long-range assignment. The biggest concern, however, was the lack of power capacitors for the ship's main guns. The ones installed on the FarStar were in bad condition, and they were in desperate need of replacing. A search of the planet turned up no spare capacitors, but, somehow, Loh'khar the Finder, a self-proclaimed procurement specialist, managed to find fifty of them, still sealed in their wrappers.[8]

With an untested ship and crew under his command, Captain Ciro ordered that the FarStar embark on a small shakedown cruise before commencing the search for Moff Sarne and his forces. While preparing in orbit of Kal'Shebbol, the vessel intercepted a distress call from the planet Kolatill. Their capital city, Domaz, had been attacked by Imperial forces and was in ruins after they had overthrown their Imperial governor in response to the New Republic's liberation of Kal'Shebbol. Captain Ciro, aware that the FarStar was the closest ship capable of rendering aid, rescinded his order regarding the shakedown cruise, and headed straight to Kolatill. While rendering emergency assistance and assisting in relief efforts, the FarStar fought the Imperial Ton-Falk-class escort carrier Kathol Protector, the ship that had perpetrated the initial assault on the planet with its large complement of starfighters. This time, however, the TIE bombers were armed with pathogenic bombs, and the FarStar, allied with the fledgling Kolatill Defense Force, worked to defend the planet. During the engagement, Captain Ciro was captured by the Kathol Protector, and First Officer Kaiya Adrimetrum assumed command of the ship.[5]

With Adrimetrum in command, the FarStar continued to track down clues as to Moff Sarne's whereabouts. Hampered by the lack of astrogation charts due to Sarne flash-clearing all Imperial computers on Kal'Shebbol, the corvette was forced to planet hop and piece together a working navigational chart from various sources including friendly planetary governments and independent traders.[8] During the early days of the mission, the FarStar responded to a distress signal from the survivors of Imperial science team MS-133 on Aaris III. Dispatching a landing party to the surface, the crew rescued two survivors; Doctor Lancer Brunou and his assistant, Solla Deremot. Although the survivors claimed to have been attacked by outside forces, an investigation revealed that the team may have turned on each other under the influence of the Plaque of Victory, a powerful alien artifact that seemed to have been the cause of the downfall of the native society on Aaris III. The crew of the FarStar narrowly avoided the same fate by throwing the artifact out of an airlock, and removing themselves from its sphere of influence.[9]

The FarStar made contact with the government of Gandle Ott, who had been pro-Imperial until Sarne had arrived shortly after the liberation of Kal'Shebbol and withdrawn the governor and the defense force. Feeling abandoned, the government of Gandle Ott negotiated with Adrimetrum, and various political factions attempted to gain the support of the New Republic in a bid to become the new planetary governor. Sarne, however, knowing that the FarStar was following him, arranged for a trap on the planet. Gandle Ott's BRT Supercomputer was reprogrammed, and took control of various computer systems and vehicles in a bid to hamper the crew of the New Republic ship. Finally, it unleashed an assassin droid that attempted to kill members of the FarStar crew at a performance of the opera Madra Teene before it was stopped.[10]

With information gained from Colonel Olaver Lansel on Gandle Ott, the FarStar headed to Shintel. Sarne, however, had arranged for another trap in the system. Lansel was actually an agent of Sarne's, posing as the Imperial representative to Gandle Ott and appeared to be of no use to Sarne since he was apparently abandoned on the planet when Sarne withdrew his personnel. Lansel was ordered to relay information to the FarStar crew that he was heading for Shintel.[10] In the system, the FarStar came across Imperial Depot 4290-1 on the planet, and discovered that the personnel on the base were considered by Sarne to be more loyal to the Empire than to him personally, and he had stranded them there. The base's commanding officer, Colonel Heget arranged to give the crew of the FarStar navigational data in return for transport to the shadowport Tanquilla Beach. Lieutenant Palme, another agent of Sarne's who had been left behind to assist in the Moff's schemes, managed to upload a doctored navigation datacard into the systems of the FarStar. When the ship tried to leave Shintel and jump to Tanquilla Beach, the programming from the datacard caused an overload in the corvette's hyperdrive engines. Qulok's Fist, a bounty hunter gang operating within the Kathol sector, had been employed by Sarne to attack the FarStar, and they engaged the corvette in a short skirmish before retreating. With no hyperdrive engines, Sergeant Lofryyhn, one of the FarStar's chief mechanics, was forced to cannibalize the hyperdrives from the corvette's X-wings in order to limp the ship to the shadowport Tanquilla Beach.[2]

The FarStar reached Tanquilla Beach, and employed the young engineer Fia to rebuild the engines. During the process, she discovered several of Sarne's programming trapdoors, but lacked the ability to remove them. Her grandfather, Spang, pointed them in the direction of Pembric II, and a man named Breslin Drake. Spang recognized the work as similar to work produced by a slicing gang that operated from the planet, and that his friend Drake was the man to ask about it. In the process of repairing the engines, Fia also managed to overhaul and upgrade them to a Class One rating.[2]

On Pembric II, the FarStar's landing party run afoul of the Bombaasa Cartel, a crime syndicate headed by Crev Bombaasa. They managed to contact Drake, a former New Republic Intelligence agent who was working as the manager of the ThrusterBurn tapcafe. Drake assisted the landing party in escaping from the Cartel, and helped them to rescue the slicer, Gaelin. Gaelin had been a member of the Keiffler Brothers organization, and had assisted with the programming modifications to the FarStar, but had not been killed like his mentors. While attempting to leave the planet, the landing party rescued several refugees who were suffering under the Cartel. Back aboard the corvette, Gaelin quickly stripped out a lot of the trapdoors implanted in the FarStar, but missed several of them because he wasn't skilled enough to recognize them.[7]

Along with Drake and the refugees, the FarStar also picked up an Imperial spy codenamed the Wraith from Pembric II. Drake had been chasing the Wraith across the Kathol sector for two years, and had unwittingly employed him as a bouncer at the ThrusterBurn under the alias of Drenn. The Wraith was in the employ of Moff Sarne, and he relayed the ship's position on Galtea to a roving fleet allied to Sarne when the corvette stopped for a maintenance layover. During the subsequent battle, the Wraith attempted to assassinate Captain Adrimetrum by using poison from the planet Sebiris which placed her in a coma. Retreating from Galtea, the crew initially believed that Adrimetrum's condition was a result of injuries sustained during an explosion on the bridge. However, her symptoms did not match the injuries, and a further investigation revealed the puncture wound from the dart used to inject the poison. Drake recognized the effects of the poison as similar to that used by the Wraith, and he suggested traveling to Sebiris, where he believed the poison originated from. Negotiating with the native Sebiri, the crew managed to locate a cure in time to save her, and uncovered the identity of the Wraith.[11]

Behind the scenes

As the Freedom's Messenger, the ship underwent an extensive refit to upgrade it to a military status. This may have been in line with the CR90 upgrade that the Tantive IV received. Although not explicitly stated, the "darker times" that caused the ship to be refitted into a military vessel was probably the Clone Wars. Far Star is the name of two ships in the Foundation Series by Isaac Asimov. FarStar is also the name of a server - or "Galaxy" - in Star Wars Galaxies.
