Biography
Unit on the run
During the Galactic Civil War between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance, Nord Kandende served as a TIE fighter pilot in the Empire's 204th Imperial Fighter Wing. Rising to the rank of lieutenant, he was eventually assigned to the 204th's Squadron Four, which was commanded by Captain Jothal Gablerone.[1] Following the Battle of Endor[3] in 4 ABY,[4] where Emperor Palpatine was killed, Sentinel messenger droids were sent in the wake of the late emperor's death with contingency orders, including the initiation of the genocidal Operation: Cinder. One of the droids reached the 204th's commanding officer, Colonel Shakara Nuress, bringing the task of destroying all life on the planet Nacronis. The fighter wing carried out the mission, but was left without orders from the Empire's higher echelons afterwards.[3]
The 204th briefly established a refueling hub for Imperial forces at the tibanna gas mining stations of the planet Pandem Nai, but were soon attacked by a battle group of the Alliance's successor, the New Republic, led by General Hera Syndulla, with the strike force Alphabet Squadron being at the forefront of the assault. The fighter wing took many losses and were driven out of the Pandem Nai system aboard the Quasar Fire-class cruiser-carriers Aerie[3] and Allegiance, with the sentinel droid escaping with them[1] after Nuress was murdered.[3]
Operation at Jarbanov
Following its losses at Pandem Nai, the 204th eventually went under the leadership of Major Soran Keize,[1] who had returned to the 204th since Pandem Nai after deserting the fighter wing in the wake of the destruction of Nacronis.[3] In the following months, the 204th carried out supply missions to sustain itself.[1] Around 5 ABY,[5] the fighter wing traveled to the planet Jarbanov at the outskirts of the junker systems to scavenge the wreckage of TIE/ln space superiority starfighters from the orbital planet's junk rings.[1]
While the Aerie was tasked with acquiring the TIE wreckage in orbit, Squadron Four was sent down to attack the Jarbanov colony while its workers were being released from their afternoon shifts. The squadron was divided into three flight groups, led by Kandende, Gablerone, and Lieutenant Palal Seedia, Gablerone's second in command, respectively. While Gablerone's flight attacked the colony's roads and bridges and Seedia's attacked the disassembly plant, Kandende's flight fired on the battery recycling plant, but did not make any significant damage.[1]
The colony deployed its own armored cloud cars against Squadron Four, which took evasive action in order to maintain distance from the enemy craft. Keize soon ordered the withdrawal of Squadron Four, which soon began ascending from Jarbanov, with the colony's cloud cars in pursuit. Seedia temporarily split off and fired on some hazard vaults, irradiating the colony. Although a New Republic corvette attempted to incept the squadron in orbit, Squadron Four was able to evade its adversary and rendezvous with the Allegiance behind Jarbanov's moon to escape into hyperspace.[1]
Bolstering resources
Not long after, the 204th went to the Pormthulis system to recapture the[1] Imperial II-class Star Destroyer[6] Edict from New Republic forces. While Squadron Five
had disrupted a welcome party for the Edict's crew. After the attack on Pandem Nai, the remnants of the 204th remained on the Aerie with a messenger droid. On one occasion, Kandende approached the messenger, unaware that the wing's commanding officer, Major Soran Keize was nearby watching. Kandende cut his own hand, allowing the blood to spill and grabbed the messenger's hand, however it did not react and Kandende left injured.[1]
During the second Operation: Cinder, Kandende participated in a battle in the Ghonoath system. He was elevated to flight commander of Squadron Four after the death of Flight Commander Garl Lykan.[2]
During a battle in the Chadawa system, he was specially selected as part of Yrica Quell's team for a mission to the Netalych system, to determine the programming of the Emperor's messenger droid. During the mission, as payment for data recovery work from the droid known as the "Surgeon", he pledged one year as a human servant. He made the sacrifice in service to the Empire and considered the sacrifice minor.[2]
Within four months after the Battle of Jakku, Kandende was recruited by Nath Tensent to work in his organization.[2]
