- "This is all we have left, and you're wasting it."
- ―Koten's reaction to Tichina mixing their water into the mushroom's spores
A species of yellow incandescent mushroom grew on[1] the planet[2] Selk. In starlight, the mushrooms emitted a golden glow and released[1] spores[3] that float into the sky. In darkness, the light of the spores faded away, and the mushroom shriveled and died. The alien Tichina collected the spores in a small jar and would stir water into the dust, creating paint.[1]
Learning from her mother, Tichina used a painting stick and blew dust over her hand to create paintings on that moved a large stone and told a story of the planet's past, including Tichina and her sister Koten's mother rebelling against the Galactic Empire's occupation of Selk. After the sisters defeated the Imperial forces at their factory, the smog in the sky retreated and allowed the stars to shine down on the planet, reviving the dead mushrooms and highlighting multiple hand prints painted on the rock.[1]
Behind the scenes
The real whale skull used as a base for the mushrooms to appear from at the end of the short
The mushrooms appeared in "In the Stars," a non-canon short film released as part of the second volume of the Star Wars: Visions series, written and directed by Gabriel Osorio. The animated short, produced by Punkrobot Studios, was released on Disney+[1] on September 22, 2021.[4] The final scene in the short involved mushrooms growing out of a real whale skull that was photographed by Punkrobot in Patagonia.[5] One of the hand prints outlined by the spores belonged to Chris Peters, art director for the short.[6]
On May 4, 2024, Punkrobot posted an animation on their official Instagram account where Tichina blew the spores over her hand on a rock. An Ewok watched her create the hand print and put their hand on the rock. Tichina then blew the spore mixture on over the Ewok's hand and they celebrated as more Ewoks appeared around them.[7]
