Biography

Having risen to the rank of field marshal, in 382 BBY Tozen was tasked with leading Bethune's military against the rival city-state of Firevale, ostensibly to recover Princess Sicatra who had been abducted by Prince Colden of Firevale.[1] In reality, the whole affair was being stage-managed by Sicatra and Colden, who had gotten married and planned to force Colden's mother, Queen Keraan, into abdicating the throne of Firevale in favor of her son. Colden would then sign a peace treaty with Bethune, allowing Bethune involvement in the baudraxite trade that Firevale had monopolized.[4] Tozen's role was to bring Firevale to its knees through the siege, while an army of mercenaries led by Abediah Viess was hired just in case Tozen needed reinforcing.[1]

Everything was proceeding according to plan when two Jedi Knights, Porter Engle and Barash Silvain, arrived in response to a distress signal that had been sent by Seleen, Firevale's envoy to Gansevor's capital, Horatio. Tozen's soldiers initially tried to prevent the Jedi from providing Firevale with supplies, but when Engle overawed the troops with his lightsaber skills they were granted an audience. Tozen initially berated the Jedi for attempting to cross the siege lines with the supplies, as well as for approaching his encampment on foot, but he was eventually persuaded by Silvain to allow the relief through and the Jedi to attempt to resolve the dispute, which he told them had arisen due to Sicatra's 'abduction.' However, after Engle and Silvain left for Firevale, Tozen quickly used his droid, Sevens, to contact Viess and ask her to begin landing her soldiers.[1]

The arrival of Viess' mercenary army led to the renewal of Tozen's bombardment of Firevale's walls.[5] Engle was quickly dispatched to prevent the onslaught, cutting his way through the Bethunians and mercenaries until he was once more confronting Tozen. Though Viess was hostile to the Jedi, Tozen agreed to pause the attack again in order to give Silvain time to locate Princess Sicatra within Firevale. Yet, as time passed, both Tozen and Viess soon decided that neither Jedi could be allowed to live, since their efforts to resolve the conflict were undermining its original purpose. Viess stated that she could kill them, but demanded time to loot Firevale as compensation for her efforts. Tozen was resistant to the idea, wanting the city to retain its important infrastructure, but eventually agreed to give the mercenaries twelve hours of pillaging.[4]

The bombardment began once more, while Viess tried and failed to bring Engle down. Angered at being bested by the expert duelist, she returned to Tozen's command tent and demanded that he begin targeting the buildings within Firevale rather than just the walls. Tozen flatly refused, reiterating the fact that he did not want to see the city itself destroyed. In response, Viess had her mercenaries blast Tozen away, before giving the command herself. Mortally wounded, Tozen used Sevens to contact Sicatra in the city, informing her of what had transpired. The information he provided served to make Sicatra realize the gravity of what she and Colden had done, leading to her making a speech that helped bring an end to the siege, albeit after much death and destruction.[4]
