Darth Sidious/Palpatine quoting

This may have been discussed before, and if so I'm sorry. When quoting him, when is it appropriate to use Darth Sidious and when Palpatine? Since it's used both ways throughout this wiki, I wondered what the standard was. Graal 22:44, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

  • Well, for pre-19 BBY Sidious quotes, then of course "Darth Sidious" would be used. Same thing for Palpatine. But after 19 BBY, he was only known as Palpatine, so that would be the name of the speaker of the quote. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 23:01, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

False Name

I get that Palpy was really Darth Sidious, but was Palpatine a false name or the name he had before Sidious? Telos 02:43, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

  • No one knows. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 13:46, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Why do Palpatine's eyes glow in Episode III, but not in ROTJ

Could it be in relation to the strength of the dark side. His eyes have a dim but present glow when Anakin defects to the dark side. The glow increases by the time Yoda attacks him in his chamber while Anakin is battling Kenobi, at this point the dark side has never been so powerful. The glow is so intense in the Senate chamber battle that his eyes look phosphoric. After Anakin/Darth Vader is badly wounded on Mustafaar, his eyes loose their intense glow. By Return of the Jedi, his eyes no longer have their glow at all, hmmm, if this theory is correct, perhaps it means that the dark side is growing weaker, due to the rise of Luke. As Palpatine puts it for Luke's abilities, "he has grown strong". Anyway, maybe his yellow eye glow is like a thermometer for how high or how low the dark side is.

Also I would like to say that I know that in the filming, it probably due to George Lucas' decision to make Palpatine "creepier" for Revenge of the Sith. But I am wondering if there is an answer to this question that is canon Star Wars. —Unsigned comment by 65.95.133.248 (talk • contribs)

  • Weird side affect of getting blasted in the face with Force lightning, perhaps? That's all I can think of.--Lord OblivionSith holocron30px 04:21, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
    • Maybe they used different contact lenses for the makeup. That's my rational answer. My other answer is this: Palpatine got fed up with scaring everyone with his glowing eyes, so he had them surgically altered. That's my non-rational answer. Unit 8311 17:53, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
      • I'm pretty sure Palpatine's eyes are glowing in RotJ. Maybe not in every single shot, but they are glowing. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 21:10, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
        • It's probably in relation to him USING the dark side, like how Storm of the X-Men uses her powers and her eyes turn completely white. But the most relevant answer for this being a talk page to a Wookieepedia article is that I don't think it has been mentioned in a canon source so there's no point speculating. Wildyoda 21:14, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
          • Well, in this case, there's really no harm speculating, providing it doesn't get out of hand. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 21:18, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
            • What of a rational explanation like this one: special effects and make-up improvement? How many times it has been constated in the new movies; the difference between the Emperor's eyes in ROTS and ROTJ musn't be explained another way that the differences between Yoda's aspect or Vader's armour between ROTS and ANH... Or so I think. --LelalMekha 13:08, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
              • Well, there are probably many OOU explanations. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 20:31, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

face???

  • I have the 1995 versions of Dark Empire and Dark Empire II. I saw the Empire's End comic at a store and saw that it had an episode II or III picture of palpatine on the cover. In Dark Empire I & II he does not look anything like that. Would he look like he did in ATOTC and ROTS when he transfered into those age bodys? I think so.

Thanks! Grand Admiral Nick Vos [Holonet] Republic Emblem

  • No. It was only the cover. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 22:57, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
    • Tsuneo Sanda created a new and beautiful image for the Dark Empire II/Empire's End rerelease, showing a RotS-era Palpatine on the cover. Presumably this was intended to attract a wider audience, since the DE Palpatine doesn't look anything like McDiarmid in RotS. But yeah, it's only a cover, so isn't canon - unfortunately, as I'd've liked to see a RotS-style Palpatine clone in DE - \\Captain Kwenn// — Ahoy! 13:12, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
      • I'd just like to know: Where is it said that covers aren't canon? Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 01:48, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
        • Since a lot of covers go against established canon.--Herbsewell 01:56, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
          • I know they do sometimes, but where exactly is that stated in the canon policy? Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 12:02, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Palpatine Cloning

I've been reading on Palpatine alot lately and I have been wondering why didn't Palpatine make a clone of Anakin's/Vader's body? Because if you think of it Vader lost His legs and arms about 4/5 of his body and was still 8/10 power of Palpatine why didn't he clone Anakin and inhabit that body it would of been alot more powerful? Lord Titze 03:19, 16 December 2006 (UTC)Predated

  • If I had to take a stab at an answer, Titze, it's this: First, Palpatine didn't yet know how to transfer his essence into other bodies; he only learned that when Ashka Boda's holocron was brought to him during the purge of Jedi who escaped Order 66. Second, cloning's not as easy as it looks. Barring the use of Spaarti cylinders, which could get you a clone quickly but were just as likely to get you a psycho clone (and he had no ysalamiri then), the most reliable form of cloning, the Kaminoan method, took ten years to get you a clone about the age Anakin was when he got deep-fried, and that's only if you adjust the clone's growth rate, and that also means Palpatine would have grown old and died twice as fast. Having just got the throne, why speed up the time when you have to give it up? Also, remember that even if he just wanted an able apprentice, rather than just a body to transfer his essence into, it had to at least be a young adult aged body. Otherwise, as Empire's End made clear, he'd just be an infant or boy, and who would care for him until he was grown? Even if he found someone to care for him, how do you explain to the populace that the new Emperor, who was supposed to be in his sixties last night, is now a kid this morning? It's bad politics to paint yourself as the savior of the galaxy and then shock the crap out of everyone by suddenly becoming incapable of governing. Anyway, that's my take! Erik Pflueger 20px 03:56, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
    • Basically what Erik said. If you were Palpatine and you suddenly entered Anakin's 19 BBY body, Palpatine's body would have had to die. This would have probably caused the same thing that happened after Endor—the Empire would split into warring factions. So, the only way to keep control would be to enter his own bodies. As for Anakin Solo, since he was a baby at the time, maybe Palpatine would be able to morph him to look like himself. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 14:33, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

                  • Ahh, I hadn't thought of that. But why does the article say he was first identified as Sidious in TPM?--Herbsewell 23:42, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

                                • This has been discussed before. Regardless of when one first realizes that Palpatine was Sidious, Sidious first appeared in Episode I, making that Palpatine's 1stID as Sidious. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 23:51, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
                                    • No that was when the named was mentioned. We never knew that palpatine was sidious.
                                      • But Palpatine was Sidious, and Sidious first appeared in Episode. Therefore, Palpatine was first ID'ed as Sidious in Episode I. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 23:54, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
                                        • Now we all know that that makes no sense! HappyTimeHarry 23:55, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

                                                • Because Palpatine and Sidious were always the same, he would have been first ID'ed as Sidious in Episode I. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 00:00, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

        • I did, but then it was reverted by Jack.--Herbsewell 00:03, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

  • Herbsewell, you didn't do what I need a name suggested. You just reverted my edits. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 00:05, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
    • Yes, because they said that he was identified in TPM.--Herbsewell 00:06, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

  • We could put "retcon" in the 1stID as Sidious template. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 00:14, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
    • It would only be a retcon if it was previously established that he was identified in TPM.--Herbsewell 00:15, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
      • I'm not sure I understood that. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 00:17, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
        • Retroactive continuity—commonly contracted to the portmanteau word retcon—refers to deliberately changing previously established facts in a work of serial fiction. It was never established that he was identified in TPM.--Herbsewell 00:19, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Speculation on the name "Sidious"

The name "Sidious" could have come from the word "insidious". The definitions are as follows:

                    1. Working or spreading in a hidden and usually injurious way;
                    2. Beguiling but harmful; alluring;
                    3. Intended to entrap; treacherous

As you all can tell all of these definitions have lots to do with Darth Sidious/Palpatine.

  • I'll bet all I have that this topic is in the archive--Herbsewell 02:33, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
  • Or it could come from the Latin "sedeo", which means "to sit", which is relative to his position as a politician and a monarch. --Master Starkeiller 20:42, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
    • That's a bit of a stretch, don't you think? Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 01:01, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
      • Not if we assume that "Insidious" also played a role in the choice of the name. --Master Starkeiller 17:20, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
        • Well, according to Leland Chee, "insidious" was the basis of the name. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 21:53, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

                                  • Verbally, yes; in spirit, sort of. In the comics, it shows how Luke finds it harder to stay in the light while maintaining the illusion of being in the dark. So, he begans to actually slip. But Leia's presence frees him long enough to complete his own mission of defeating the Emperor. Grand Admiral J. • When he gave his allegiance in the throne room did he mean it?--Herbsewell 20:44, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
                                      • No. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 20:46, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

                                          • Because the comic tells what Luke planned to do. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 20:51, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

                                              • I loaned the comic to a friend for the weekend. I won't have it until Monday. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 00:16, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

                                                    • Well why did he tell Leia that he was following his own destiny?--Herbsewell 15:31, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
  • Sorry Jack. I didn't realize this discussion was still going. Do you want the source still? If so, I'll try to find it, but I can't remember where I saw it. It might have been his blog. Anyway, Herbsewell, I think he meant exactly what he said. He was following his own path. Chack Jadson 20:15, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
    • I don't think it's needed anymore. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 20:17, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
      • Why didn't he say something like "don't worry, I'm bringing about the destruction of the reborn emperor", instead of Leia thinking that he went to the dark side.--Herbsewell 22:17, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

Sidious first revealed as Palpatine in Inside the Worlds of Star Wars Trilogy

I just realized, while looking at this book, that one of the captions actually identifies Sidious as Palpatine, making this the first time Sidious is explicitly revealed as Palpatine.--Lord OblivionSith holocron30px 15:25, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

  • Oh, yeah... I remember that. What's that on the "Emperor's Observation Tower" page? Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 21:46, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
