Quotes

A couple of the quotes make sense in the article but IU referred to vastly different things: Mace's "The Chancellor loves power" comes far after the era it serves as a header to, and "Soon I will have a new apprentice" refers to Anakin, not Dooku. Ideas?--The Erl

  • I thought the quotes were fine. I don't think they should have to adhere to the eras in which they were uttered. .... 00:44, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
    • Agreed. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 01:10, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
      • The "Soon I will have a new apprentice" quote shouldn't be in the Dooku section if it's about Anakin, unless Palpatine likes saying that a lot or something. -- I need a name (Complain here) 02:20, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
Sidious: "Soon I will have a new apprentice..."
Maul: "What?"
Sidious: "Huh? Oh, nothing...nothing at all"
―Deleted scene from The Phantom Menace
  • I don't think he said it that often. I think it should be moved to the appropriate spot. .... 05:22, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
    • Good point. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 12:24, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
  • AGGGHHH!!!! NOOOOOOOO! This article is the longest on the site and pretty much the best! And now people are screwing around with the quotes, ruining its perfectity!

How does "My master taught me everything I know, even the nature of the dark side", become the main quote after the other one!? How does that sum up Palpatine's character? (And not philisophically!) Someone revert the Yoda one, that was just fine.--Vladius Magnum

  • Unfortunately, you've been the only one thus far to voice disagreement on that. I'm going to revert it back to Anakin's quote. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 12:07, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
    • I don't like the Anakin one either; it seems too localized in "he's been trained to use the dark side". Of course! Thousands of people have been at one time! But Palpatine is quite possibly the most important one. We need a quote like the Yoda one, or something character-wise. I don't like it when people put obscure quotes in that don't really describe the article subject. That's why I fixed the Empire one. How does "Fear will keep the local systems in line" apply to anything except the LOCAL SYSTEMS IN RELATIONSHIP TO THE DEATH STAR AND NOT THE WHOLE FRICKIN' EMPIRE OR ITS IDEALS IN ALL OF HISTORY!? It works for the Tarkin Doctrine, however, and it should be there. It might help in a section or something, but it doesn't describe it as a whole. The Bail Organa one on Naboo would be great for Palpatine, but it applies too much affiliation with politics. However, I would rather have the Naboo one there instead of many other things.--Quote Lord Magnum
      • The truth is, Yoda's quote doesn't say what kind of powers Palpatine has. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 20:54, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
        • That's irrelevant - it has gravity behind it. All Anakin is saying is practically "He's a bad guy". Yup. .... 21:52, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
          • It is plenty relevant. Of course he's a bad guy. He's the baddest guy, though. That's what I'm saying. The Anakin one might as well be used for "Dark Jedi" if it weren't talking specifically about Palpatine. He needs a quote telling us what KIND of bad guy he is. Although, I do agree that the Yoda one is a little vague. Don't we have any all-encomp asing quotes about him? Ah, whatever. I need to finish my book report.--The Lord of Quotitity
            • I sorta felt that way too when I added it, but looking back at it I think it's really the only line that defines Palpatine. Sure we knew him as this really, really evil guy, but when our heroes find out he's the mastermind behind it all, it just comes out to one plain and simple quote - lalala_la

Oh, wait a minute. I'm sorry, Thefourdotelipsis. I didn't realize you were agreeing with me. My 13-year-old redhead is not on straight right now. My apologies.--The Quotester

  • Yes, we redheads usually do get riled up about the most minor things. .... 23:46, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
    • This is also a prime case of Lucas vs Kasdan. Banality vs Memorability. .... 23:48, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
      • "Yes, we redheads usually do get riled up about the most minor things." Figures. I'm a redhead, too. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 00:59, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
        • Makes sense. I suppose we can look forward to many heated debates in the future. It is unavoidable. By default, two redheads cannot get along. .... 01:02, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
          • Let's hope that only talks about a few debates. ;) Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 01:08, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
            • Hey, at least we make talk pages interesting. .... 01:11, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
              • Unfortunately, we're off-topic. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 01:15, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Right, well, I was on-topic. About the Yoda vs Anakin thing. Really, Yoda's is best, because it's got more gravity, more weight behind it. If I was going to have a ROTS quote, I'd have the one from the novel
"Palpatine is Sidious. The Chancellor is the Sith Lord"
―Mace Windu's thoughts

But the Yoda quote is still better. .... 01:21, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

  • There was a time when multiple quotes were allowed in the beginning of the article. Unfortunately, that time is over. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 01:22, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
    • Well, I don't know what to do. The Yoda quote was far superior, but...I'll let this one slip. .... 01:24, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
      • They definitely are both good quotes; perhaps we could get permission to use them both. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 01:27, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
        • Maybe that would work - number of quotes proportional to article length. .... 01:29, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
          • It's worth a proposal. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 01:32, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
            • I've already got that many proposals and junk up in the Senate - I'll wait a while. .... 01:33, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
              • Whatever. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 01:34, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
                • It still needs to be fixed. But I had no idea that there were so many Red Head Wookieepedians! We need our own userbox!(I have my own, but it sucks.) sorry for going off topic. But still, I don't like the Anakin one. Its a quote from Hayden Christensen for Pete's sake! He delivers the lines all corny and I hate people who blame it on George Lucas' directing. Yoda's is a classic, and will be more remembered. They are his dying words. And Anakin's doesn't really say what kind of powers he has, either. The quote should sum up the character, actually. The Yoda one maybe shouldn't be used either. We need a good one. I obsess over quotes. My family obsesses over quotes. Get it right, or my forehead will ignite my already flaming red hair!--Voting for Quoting(Clan Magnum)
                  • First, keep opinions off of talk pages. Second, Anakin's quote actually shows that Palpatine can use the dark side. Yoda's quote doesn't come near that. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 20:37, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
                    • Yeah, but the thing is, the quote doesn't need to tell us everything. It should just be a memorable quote that sums up his character. And the Yoda one does that far better than the Anakin one. .... 21:54, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
                      • Well, like Vladius said, we should probably find another one. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 23:13, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
                        • I always thought "I will make it legal" was a very good summing up of Palpatine's character - the political manipulator, the man without qualms, a guy who's really in control. I think that would be suitable. Thoughts? .... 23:19, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
                          • I don't think that's good enough to be a main quote. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 23:21, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
  • And why not? It gives you everything about Palpatine's character, and it's short, simple, memorable, and to the point. If you want, you can add context.
Nute Gunray: "My Lord...is that not...illegal?"
Darth Sidious: "I will make it legal."
―Nute Gunray to Darth Sidious

.... 23:24, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

  • The only reason I think it wouldn't work is because he's talking about a blockade, not him being a Sith Lord or ruler of the Galaxy like the Anakin and Yoda quotes. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 23:30, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
    • You're missing the point. This isn't about when or why the quote was made, it's about how it sums up his character. This quote is Palpatine to a T. .... 23:32, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
      • Except it doesn't sum up that he is a Sith Lord and a ruler of the Galaxy, the two greatest character traits he has. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 23:33, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
        • Yes it does. That maliciousness, that callousness, can be applied to any time frame that he exsisted in. He was a ruler of the Galaxy because he played hard-ball, because he manipulated events to best serve his purposes. .... 23:35, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
          • Thefourdot, I'm just saying that he wasn't yet the ruler of the Galaxy. Yes, he had control over a large portion of the Galaxy, but still, I remember reading better quotes. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 23:38, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
            • I think he already knew he was going to be ruler of the galaxy. As I say, it doesn't matter when it was said, it's just got to symbolise the character well - and that quote does. It's also memorable, as opposed to the banal Anakin line. .... 23:39, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
              • The Yoda quote is far better, though. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 23:41, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
                • Yeah, of course. But you don't want the Yoda quote up there. .... 23:44, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
                  • It depends on what other quotes are options. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 23:45, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
  • What about "The Emperor is not as forgiving as I (am?)" .... 23:46, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
    • Not bad at all. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 23:48, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
      • Well, I thought it was good, coming from the symbol of terror in the galaxy. Problem is, I don't know ROTJ verbatim - does he say "am" or not at the end of it? .... 23:50, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
        • Yeah, he says "am". Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 23:52, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
          • Right...should we put it up? .... 23:57, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
            • We should probably wait for more opinions. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 00:09, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
              • Ah, they're not going to care. If they don't like it they can come here and complain and we'll change it back to the Anakin quote. .... 00:17, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
                • We should at least get Vladius's opinion first. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 00:18, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
                  • Alright, but if he hasn't commented in 24 hours, I'm putting it up. .... 00:19, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
                    • That would be a bit rude. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 00:50, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
                      • We are dynamic. We keep moving. Be bold, remember? .... 00:53, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
                        • No. Two users do not speak for all of Wookieepedia. The quote can wait. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 00:54, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
                          • It's not as if any harm's going to come from the change. .... 00:58, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
                            • Thefourdot, just wait already. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 01:01, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
                              • But it's so exciting. :| .... 01:03, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
                                • Sorry I wasn't in the discussion for a while. I had to do...something. But I agree, it wouldn't hurt to change it. If no one has any objection. I'm sorry if I don't follow all the procedures; I'm relatively new here. But as a pragmatist, I have to say that the Quote should be changed as soon as possible. If someone doesn't object, then we change it, until someone changes it again and we question their sanity for strange reasons. Oh, and thanks for considering my opinion. I don't think that "I will make it legal" would really go well overall. But it does seem at least on par with "An extraordinary world, Naboo. I'll never understand how it spawned… our Supreme Chancellor."
   —Bail Organa

It would seem that most of the quotes would go in sections of the character, rather than the entire thing. The Yoda one is vague, but it does kind of sum up the character more than the other ones we've come up with.--Vladius(Clan Magnum)

  • What about the Darth Vader one we were talking about? .... 01:52, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
  • That one is okay, but unforgiveness is not really indicating the dark side or Palpatine's character. Just look at Borsk Fey'lya. It's kind of Darth Vader's way of saying, "You're in deep now, muthaf****." That does kind of tell you something about Palpatine's character, but its kind of like the quote I changed back on the Yoda article. "Do or do not, there is no try" is a better quote than, say "I'm looking for a great warrior." Yoda is known by fans and Star Wars characters alike as a great warrior, just like how Palps is known by Darth Vader for being notorious and unforgiving to his minions, but we need groundbreaking, strong, gravity quotes (no, Electromagnetic Quotes!)like you said. But anyway, I would go with the Yoda one.--Vladius(Clan Magnum)
    • Or we could just use his catch-phrase: "Everything is proceeeding as I have forseen it". .... 03:04, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

I kinda like that idea, actually. It implies that things always go his way, which they do, up until his death, not long after that quote. It also implies that he is strong in the force to have premonitions and be able to plan out the galaxy. Good idea mister Elipse! That's a good quote. Now it should be catchphrase versus Yoda spiel.--Vladius Magnum, Dark Lord of the Quotes(Clan Magnum)

  • Whilst I'm really partial to the Yoda quote, I think it would be nice to have his catchphrase up there. .... 03:12, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

I can't decide. Nebulax should be tiebreaker. There might be another good quote by Vader buried in ROTJ; I'll have to watch it again. However, for now, I must go to bed. Talk'atcha'later.--Vladius Magnum(Clan Magnum)

    • His catch phrase isn't that bad. Unfortunately, I'm torn between that and Vader's quote. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 11:59, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Hmmmm. I don't like Vader's that much, but after I get home from school I'll watch ROTJ and see if there's anything else or if I'm even thinking of it in the right context.--Vladius Magnum(Clan Magnum)
    • Well, I can agree that it's not a great quote, but coming from Vader, it seems like a very good main quote to me. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 12:08, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

I think I have Gold! I just finished ROTJ, and came up with this: "The Emporer will show you the true nature of the force" -Vader

Actually, it may be more like silver or copper, and I think I still prefer the catchphrase. But at least we have one more option. Tell me what you think.--Vladius Magnum(Clan Magnum)

  • Not bad at all. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 20:35, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I kinda like it. It sounds kind of like the Revan and Jedi Exile ones. ie. looking upon you etc., blah blah blah, ooh the Force. It's catchy.--Vladius Magnum(Clan Magnum)

  • It's good...I still kinda prefer the catch-phrase, though. .... 22:29, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

So, we change it to the catch phrase then? If I get permssion, I'll do that now.--Vladius Magnum(Clan Magnum)

  • Yeah, do the catch phrase. If someone doesn't like it, they can complain about it here. .... 23:51, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

Done. But I'm not sure if I got the wording right. Is it, "All is as I have forseen it"? or "All is as I have forseen", or something else?--Vladius Freakin' Magnum

  • I'm positive it's "Everything is proceeding as I have forseen". Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 00:37, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
    • Yeah, that's the one. .... 00:41, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
      • Great. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 00:45, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your help, you guys. Quotes deserve treatment like this.--Vladius Magnum(Clan Magnum)

  • No problem. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 13:54, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
    • I have a quote suggestion, from ROTJ: "Everything that has transpired here has done so according to my design." Sums up Palpy's manipulative character to a T. 71.230.21.190 00:38, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
      • Eugh, not again. That's very close to the current one, and Palpy uses the current one and variations often. He says it like, 9 times in TIE Fighter. .... 00:45, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
        • I don't have TIE Fighter, but yeah, Palpatine said this current quote a few times in various sources. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 02:43, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
          • You're a fleet junkie and you don't have TIE Fighter? Cuckoo. .... 04:23, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
            • It's a computer game, right? Well, computer games don't work well on my computer. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 14:20, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
              • Sorry to start this again, but can we get a different quote? The thing about "the emperor showing the true power of the force" to Luke was good. Maybe the one where he was talking about his mentor teaching him the dark side, or even the Yoda one. This new one is bad. Chack Jadson 22:00, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
                • The Plagueis teaching Palpatine quote and Yoda's quote aren't going in. That's been decided. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 22:03, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
                  • Well, yes I understand that, but why? I just think they show more about Palpatine than the current one. Chack Jadson 19:54, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
                    • This quote shows that he could see just about everything, and that he had power over the complete Galaxy. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 00:35, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
                      • And just a note: If anyone changes the quote without prior approval here, I'll revert it. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 00:44, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
                        • Alright, I'll stop asking. I personally don't like it, but oh whatever. And if you were adressing me, I wasn't planning on changing it without approval. Chack Jadson 01:39, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

                          • What do you people think of: "The Dark Side of the Force surrounds the chancellor" by Mace Windu. It describes very well the character and his deadly skills in the dark side. Also, in the acctual quote "Every thing is going as I have foreseen", Palpatine is talking about the preparations for the battle of Endor, and the end, every thing didn't really go as planned so Sidious was wrong in that statement. I think the quote should describe the character, not an event he prepared. So what do you people think?
                            • The problem with your quote is that Mace didn't know yet that Palpatine was a Sith Lord. As for the current quote, it's just meant to show how Palpatine had control—or thought he had control—over galactic events. Grand Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 12:16, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
                            • Good point.
