"I went in and got this myself."
"How? How's that possible? It was… It was sealed on the Imperial Naval Base in Steergard."
―Cassian Andor and Luthen Rael[6]

Steergard was an astronomical object in the Expansion Region's Woostri sector that was the site of the one of the Galactic Empire's naval bases. Some of Steergard's Imperial technology was stolen by thieves who interacted with the rebel agent Luthen Rael and his shadowy anti-Imperial network. Dedra Meero, a supervisor in the Empire's Imperial Security Bureau, had jurisdiction over Steergard's sector and began investigating a link with one of the thefts at the naval base and similar thefts of Imperial technology elsewhere.

After his capture by the Empire, a rebel pilot associated with the Neo-Separatist Anto Kreegyr was held in custody on a destroyer off of Steergard, where the torture specialist Doctor Gorst was sent to help interrogate him for Meero. In 4 BBY, a group of personnel training on Steergard were due to be transferred elsewhere. In 3 BBY, Rael collected the rebel spy Cassian Andor from Port Steergard on Steergard.

Steergard was a terrestrial astronomical object[4] located in the Steergard system of the Woostri sector, within the Expansion Region[1] and Trailing Sectors regions.[2] Situated at the coordinates M-16 of the Standard Galactic Grid, Steergard lay along the Rimma Trade Route[3] super-hyperroute[7] between the[3] Woostri[8] and Vondarc systems.[3] Steergard featured oceans.[5]

History

To steal from the Empire

"This is an Imperial Starpath unit. It was stolen from the Steergard Naval yard last year. We don't know when it was taken because Steergard was afraid to disclose its theft and thought they could hide its absence. My full report highlights the prevelance of this problem galaxy-wide."

During the reign of the Galactic Empire, an Imperial Naval Base operated in Steergard, holding valuable Imperial technology.[6] The Empire trained naval personnel there as well.[4] By 5 BBY,[10] there were multiple thefts of Imperial technology from Steergard, one in which three of its targeting deflectors were taken and eventually fell into the hands of Luthen Rael, the coordinator of a shadowy anti-Imperial network. Additionally,[9] around 6 BBY,[11] the thief Cassian Andor infiltrated the naval base dressed in Imperial uniform and carrying a toolkit, successfully stealing an Imperial N-S9 Starpath Unit sealed there without difficulty.[6]

After discovering the Starpath unit was gone, the Imperials at Steergard attempted to cover up the theft, afraid of the consequences of its disclosure. Nevertheless, the disappearance came to the attention of Dedra Meero,[9] a supervisor in the Empire's Imperial Security Bureau who oversaw Steergard's sector.[12] Andor attempted to sell the stolen Imperial Starpath unit to Rael[6] in 5 BBY,[10] but the pair were interrupted when the Pre-Mor Authority Security Forces tried to apprehend the thief over a different crime.[6] The Starpath unit was left at the scene and recovered by the Empire, soon catching the attention of Meero.[12] The supervisor was able to investigate the matter further under suspicions of the existence of Rael's network, trying to link it with thefts at locations like Kessel, Fondor, Jakku, and Base Cay.[13]

Information gathering

"And where are you stationed?"
"I've been training on Steergard, but we're all being transferred now."
"Really? Where's everyone going?"

Later in 5 BBY,[14] a rebel pilot affiliated with a rebel cell led by the Neo-Separatist Anto Kreegyr was detained at a customs check and held in custody aboard a destroyer located off of Steergard. The torture specialist Doctor Gorst was sent there to interrogate the pilot, with Meero asking questions remotely. Gorst got the rebel talking almost immediately for Meero, who extracted information from the prisoner about Kreegyr's upcoming plans for a raid.[15]

In 4 BBY, a group of personnel being trained on Steergard were set to be transferred elsewhere. One of the cadets was the son of a naval veteran. At the wedding of Chandrilans Leida Mothma and Stekan Sculdun, the naval father and son spoke to an undercover Rael, the son mentioning their training on Steergard. Rael continued the conversation by questioning where they were being transferred to next.[4] In 3 BBY,[16] Rael sent Andor, who had become one of his spies, to the planet Ghorman to assess the capabilities of the Ghorman Front rebel cell. The pair met again on Rael's Fondor Haulcraft at Port Steergard on Steergard, Andor arriving late due to a spot inspection leaving Ghorman. The haulcraft departed Steergard upon Andor's late arrival.[5]

Inhabitants

Steergard was inhabited by numerous workers[5] and Imperial personnel,[4] including humans and blutopians.[5]

Location

Steergard included the maritime[5] industrial wasteland[17] Port Steergard.[5]

Behind the scenes

Steergard was first mentioned in "Reckoning,"[6] the third episode of the first season of the live-action Disney+ series Star Wars: Andor, which aired on September 21, 2022.[18] The scene where the location is mentioned was previewed in a clip released on the official Star Wars YouTube channel on August 24 of that year.[19]

In "What a Festive Evening," the sixth episode of Andor's second season[5] that released on April 29, 2025,[20] the similarly named location Port Steergard appears but is labeled "Rimma Trade Route."[5] This contradicted the placement given by Jason Fry and Emily Shkoukani's reference book Star Wars: Complete Locations, New Edition,[21] published on March 6 of 2025[22] with map designs by Christopher Ibbitt,[23] as well as the Star Wars Galaxy Map StarWars.com article[3] and its accompanying appendix "Star Systems of the Galaxy"[1]—both of these works having been authored by Jason Fry,[24] with the map design for "The Star Wars Galaxy" being done by Ibbitt,[23] and published on June 24, 2025.[24] The second iteration of the "Star Wars Galaxy Map" and "Star Systems of the Galaxy," updated on October 13 of 2025, corrected Steergard's placement[25] to be along the Rimma Trade Route.[3] This article therefore considers this correction to be true, and that Port Steergard is resultantly connected to it, which makes "What a Festive Evening" the first appearance of Steergard.
