A cold weather assault stormtrooper wearing snowtrooper armor
Snowtrooper armor was the armor of the cold weather assault stormtroopers of the Galactic Empire.[1] It was designed to protect its wearer from extreme cold and was paired with ice boots, an insulated kama, a heated rebreather[2] and polarized snow goggles.[3]
Characteristics
Body armor
Snowtrooper chestplates were a derivative of the Officer Corps' battle armor and included controls for the heating backpack
Snowtrooper armor was one of the many variations of the standard armor worn by the troopers of the Imperial Stormtrooper Corps.[4] It was worn by cold weather assault stormtroopers operating in extreme cold and as such had many modifications focused on improving their performance in these environments, most visible of which was its white color. To allow for greater mobility and flexibility, it had neither the cuisses nor greaves that made up the leg armor of its standard counterpart, instead featuring only knee guards[1] and thick insulated pants.[2] Their body armor consisted of a single plackart[1] similar to the one used in the battle armor of the Imperial Officer Corps,[2] shoulder armor and short vambraces. A codpiece connected to their utility belt completed the standard snowtrooper armor, although modifications including hip armor could also occasionally be worn.[1]
Helmet
A snowtrooper helmet
Snowtrooper helmets were carefully designed to offer maximum protection against the cold as well as enemy fire for the individual trooper. To that end, they consisted of a helmet similar to the officer corps'[2] covering the skull and top of the head[1] as well as a protective hood covering the trooper's face.[4] Underneath the hood the troopers wore a rebreather[2] and polarized snow goggles,[3] while the entire helmet was heated using an external battery pack that could last for up to two weeks and carried on the trooper's back.[2]
Cold protection measures
To protect snowtroopers from blizzards and ice, their armor included rugged[4] ice boots, an insulated kama worn over the hips[2] and reaching all the way to their feet[1] as well as a survival backpack including a grappling gun, ion flares and a homing beacon.[3] The entire suit was heated by a heating unit powered by the batter pack next to the survival backpack, while troopers are specially trained to withstand arctic temperatures.[4]
Variations
Stormtrooper
A variant of the snowtroopers' heating backpack was designed to be integrated in a standard stormtrooper's armor. It resembled the survival backpack worn by desert stormtroopers with the addition of a longer antenna and a larger canister.[5]

Scout troopers operating on cold environments could be equipped with a variant of the snowtrooper armor including the chest armor, pauldrons and vambraces. They wore a modified helmet incorporating the macrobinocular viewplate and heavy duty rebreather of the scout troopers' helmet as well as the heating capabilities of the snowtroopers'. Cold assault scout troopers wore an insulated body suit like their stormtrooper counterparts, but their battery pack was specially designed to be detached and carried on board a 74-Z speeder bike to facilitate the operations of fast-moving scouting parties.[6]
