During his leaving from Segra Milo, Luthen Rael was involved in a skirmish above Segra Milo with the Galactic Empire when his ship engaged Imperial Captain Elk and his Cantwell-class Arrestor cruiser.[2]

Prelude

In 5 BBY, rebel spymaster Luthen Rael traveled to Segra-Milo to meet with Saw Gerrera to try convincing him to work with Anto Kreegyr for an upcoming assault on Spellhaus, but Gerrera outright refused.[5] When he returned to Coruscant, Rael was informed by his informant in the Imperial Security Bureau, Lonni Jung, that the Empire was waiting to ambush Kreegyr at Spellhaus. However, Rael refused to warn Kreegyr, knowing that if he were to call off his attack, the ISB would suspect a spy in their ranks.[1]

Rael would then travel back to Segra Milo, but by then, the Partisan leader had changed his mind and agreed to join forces with Kreegyr in exchange for the Imperial technology Rael promised, his men would get to loot the garrison and they would take orders from no one. In response, Rael tried to softly dissuade Gerrera, which confused him, leading Rael to inform him of the impending ISB ambush, though he didn't know what Gerrera would do with the information. Becoming suspicious on Rael's willingness to sacrifice Kreegyr, Gerrera began to suspect he was either ISB or had a source he was determined to protect, though Rael didn't admit to either. He left the decision to warn Kreegyr up to Gerrera, but the latter chose to avoid it by instead demanding the identity of Rael's source, suggesting they were in the ISB, with Kreegyr's group or in the Partisans. Rael falsely named Benthic as his agent, creating enough confusion to he could steal his blaster and force Gerrera to listen to reason; by sacrificing Kreegyr, the ISB would become arrogant and allow the growing Rebellion to grow in strength; if they were to warn Kreegyr, the ISB would become suspicious to the point of paranoia. Conceding to Rael's argument, Gerrera agreed to not warn Kreegyr for the sake of the war against the Galactic Empire.[2]

The skirmish

With his mission on Segra-Milo a success, Rael proceeded to depart the planet. While his Fonder Haulcraft was in high orbit, he communicated with his assistant Kleya Marki at his gallery on Coruscant. Speaking in coded phrases about art, Rael made it clear he was going to Ferrix, hoping to assist Vel Sartha and Cinta Kaz in locating Cassian Andor. Despite Marki's protests, Rael was determined to find and silence Andor before the ISB could capture him and expose his anonymity. Just as Marki promised she was preparing for every outcome, their transmission was suddenly cut as the Haulcraft was approached by a Cantwell-class Arrestor Cruiser.[2]

Captain Elk hailed Rael, identifying himself as Segra-Milo Imperial patrol and demanded Rael identify himself. Ordering his droid mod to select an active transponder ID, with the preference being Alderaanian, Rael responded to Elk's request. While Elk's crew verified the transponder ID, he declared that Rael would be standing by as his cruiser engaged a tractor beam on his Haulcraft. Determined to escape, Rael ordered his droid mod to initiate a decoy burn from his portside thruster, passing it off as an engine overheat, as he readied his vessel's countermeasures. Though Rael's transponder ID was verified, Elk decided to initiate a boarding party anyway as practise for his crew and ordered Rael to power down his engines. In response, Rael attempted to break away, forcing Elk, with his crew suspecting him to be a pirate, to order the tractor force up to Level 5, and gave him a final warning to either stand down or face full consequences.[2]

With his droid mod monitoring the tractor force and with the Imperials playing right into his hands, Rael proceeded to release a series of miniature projectiles from the Haulcraft, which rapidly impacted the RT-17 repulsor-tractor beam emitter, shattering it and freeing his vessel. Shocked, Elk ordered his air wing, composed of 3 TIE fighters and a single TIE boarding craft to deploy.[2]

Freeing of the tractor beam, Rael quickly piloted the Haulcraft around and destroyed the TIE boarding craft and then one TIE fighter. After circling around past the Arrestor cruiser's bridge, Rael deployed his Haulcraft's hidden laser cannon turrets and turned his ship into a spin, destroying the remaining TIE fighters before immediately jumping into hyperspace.[2]
