Rotgut was a type of beverage that could be stored in bottles.[1] By 3 ABY,[2] Gar Tharik, a member of the Rokana Raiders pirate group, had been caught stealing a bottle of rotgut from the raiders' supply room. Their punishment was decided by a crew vote in line with the pirates' Rokana Code, and Tharik was sentenced to not receive any shares from the pirates' following five raids. The offense and punishment were recorded on a list of punishments administered to members of the pirate group. A copy of the list was stored on a datapad in the raiders' brig while they were based at the Khepi Tomb in the Sayma Nebula[1] around 3 ABY.[2]
Around that year,[2] the thief Kay Vess read the datapad detailing Tharik's theft of the rotgut after she escaped her cell in the brig with the help of Nix, her merqaal companion.[1]
Behind the scenes
Rotgut was mentioned in the current Star Wars canon in the "A Pirate's Fortune" expansion for the video game Star Wars Outlaws, developed by Massive Entertainment, published by Ubisoft,[1] and released on May 15, 2025.[3] The beverage was originally introduced in the Star Wars Legends continuity; first being mentioned in Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game published by West End Games in 1987.[4] Rotgut then made its first appearance in Mask of the Pirate Queen, an adventure supplement written by Tim Huckelberry for use in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire roleplaying game published by Fantasy Flight Games in 2015.[5] In the real-world, rotgut is a term for cheap or inferior liquor.[6]

Per narrative director Navid Khavari's comments, the game's "A Pirate's Fortune" DLC chronologically occurs immediately after the end of Outlaws's main events, meaning the DLC must have taken place around that year.
