Merqaal

Merqaals^[4] were a rare species of small, quadrupedal^[2] manidae^[1] exhibiting a high level of intelligence. Their bodies were covered in both fur and scales, with pink exposed skin at the end of their tails and on their paws. Their heads bore three sets of articulate feelers that allowed them to sense their environment for danger or items of interest. The scales were blue-grey and covered their back and the tops of their head, tail, and top set of feelers. Their belly, face, legs, and feelers were covered in fur that varied in color from brown and dark red at the base of their tail and feelers, to light tan on their belly and face. Their "sticky" paws combined with their strong tail allowed them to traverse vertical environments and difficult terrain. This, combined with their small size and agility meant they could explore tight spaces with ease.^[2]

They were prized by collectors as exotic pets, notably catching the eyes of the Sixth Kin crime syndicate and later Jabba the Hutt, who added a member of the species, Nix, to the menagerie at his palace.^[2]

The merqaal Nix accompanied the outlaw Kay Vess^[3] after she freed him from the Sixth Kin in Canto Bight.^[2]
