"It's a Kuati Signet. Blue kyber. Sky stone. The ancient world. Celebrates the uprising against the Rakatan invaders."
Luthen Rael, to Cassian Jeron Andor[2]

The Rakatans,[3] also known as the Rakata, were an ancient amphibious humanoid species native to the planet Lehon[1] who ruled over the so-called Infinite Empire.[4] According to legend, they were the first to develop hyperspace travel.[1] Long before the Imperial Era, the Rakatans staged an invasion of the planet Kuat, but were eventually repelled by an uprising.[5] A Kuati Signet embedded with a blue kyber crystal commemorated the uprising.[2] Around 25,000 BBY, Rakatan invaders also sacked the planet Chandrila and stole the twelve Chandi Merle statues that stood in one of their temples around the same year.[6] The Rakatan species was said to have eventually gone extinct as a result of corruption from the dark side of the Force.[1] They shared their name with mystical antiquities known as Rakatan wraith boxes.[7]

Behind the scenes

Canon and origins

A Rakata in Star Wars Legends

A Rakata in Star Wars Legends

The Rakatans were first mentioned in the new Star Wars canon in the forty-fifth issue of the De Agostini magazine Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon, albeit only in its German release.[8] The species originated in Star Wars Legends in the 2003 video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The Rakata in that game were the fallen remnant of what had once been a galaxy-spanning empire that conquered, ruled, and decimated other species through the dark side of the Force.[9] The Force powered the Rakata's hyperspace technology.[10]
