- "Strong hit."
"Batted for the phaseball team back in the academy."
"With a blaster rifle?"
"First time for everything." - ―Lourna Dee and Jon Wittick
Phaseball was a team ball sport in which individuals could bat. During the High Republic Era, the human Jon Wittick batted for the phaseball team of his academy, which he recalled in 231 BBY while serving aboard the Galactic Republic prison ship Restitution. Both the clone Tech and the pirate Phee Genoa heard theories about the sport's matches being predetermined, which they noted as the latter watched a phaseball match on a holofeed on the planet Tryth around 18 BBY.
Description
Phaseball was a team ball sport in which individuals could bat.[1]
History
- "I once met a Reg who thought the outcome of all phaseball games was predetermined."
"I've heard that one."
"I used to think it was an illogical conspiracy theory. There were too many variables to execute the ruse on such a large scale."
[Genoa turns the game off.]
"I didn't intend to discourage your viewing."
"Eh. I don't like either of those teams much, anyway." - ―Tech and Phee Genoa
During his time at an academy[1] by 231 BBY,[3] during the High Republic Era, the human Jon Wittick batted for the academy's phaseball team.[1] That year,[3] while Wittick served as a Galactic Republic counselor aboard the prison ship Restitution, he hit away a scav droid with a blaster rifle during an attack on the ship. After the prisoner Sal Krost—secretly the Nihil Tempest Runner Lourna Dee—noted it had been a strong hit, the counselor informed her that he had batted for his academy's phaseball team. When Dee questioned if it had been with a blaster rifle, Wittick noted there was a first time for everything.[1]
Phee Genoa (pictured) watched a phaseball game while on Tryth.
At one point by around 18 BBY,[4] the human[5] clone Tech met another clone trooper who believed that the outcomes of all phaseball matches were predetermined, though Tech himself thought that it was an illogical conspiracy theory as there were too many variables required to execute the ruse on such a large scale. The human pirate Phee Genoa at one point also heard the same theory about the sport.[2]
Around that year,[4] during the Imperial Era, as Genoa was sat in a waiting room within a clinic on the planet Tryth, she watched a game of phaseball on the holonet. After Tech arrived into the room, he sat next to the pirate and recalled the theory the clone trooper had told him. Once Genoa told the clone she had also heard the same theory, he responded by noting his thoughts on how it was implausible. The pirate then turned the holofeed showing the match off and Tech told Genoa that he had not intended to dissuade her from watching the game. In response, the pirate stated she did not much like the teams that had been playing.[2]
Behind the scenes
Phaseball was first mentioned in the current Star Wars canon in The High Republic: Tempest Runner, a 2021 audio drama written by Cavan Scott and published as a part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[6] Phase I.[7] The spelling of the sport's name was later confirmed with the release of the audio drama's script in 2022.[1] Phaseball then appeared for the first time on a holofeed in Sanctuary: A Bad Batch Novel, a 2025 novel written by Lamar Giles.[2] The sport originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it was mentioned in Star Wars: The Old Republic, a 2011 video game developed by BioWare.[8]
