The Borstel Galactic Defense NK-7 ion cannon was a powerful ship-based ion cannon used on Imperial capital ships, especially Imperial Star Destroyers.

Description

Manufactured by Borstel Galactic Defense, the NK-7 ion cannon was a turreted starship-mounted weapon. Each turret had a single cannon which could be raised or lowered by an elevating gun plate that ran on elevation tracking rails.[1] The NK-7 had an optimum range of ten kilometers and a maximum range of eighty kilometers. The turrets were coordinated by gunnery stations to allow multiple cannons to fire at a single target; a typical volley from NK-7 ion cannons was enough to immobilize a starship for several minutes.[2]

Each emplacement featured a dedicated turbine generator and capacitor banks feeding power to the weapon via an Energy Coupler. The energy bolt travelled through an ion accu-accelerator before being fired out of the barrel. A cooling grid was located behind the Energy Coupler, and the gunnery crew stations and targeting computers were situated at the base of the turret.[1]

History

The Galactic Empire mounted sixty Borstel NK-7 ion cannons on their Imperial-class Star Destroyers.[1] The Star Destroyer Devastator used NK-7 ion cannons to disable the CR90 corvette Tantive IV over Tatooine.[2]
