"Who I am is not of any importance. What I need help with, on the other hand, may affect the future of the entire galaxy."
Obi-Wan Kenobi[6]

The mission on Mustafar saw an unidentified spacer collaborate with Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi's spirit in order to correct an imbalance in the Force on the planet Mustafar. The mission saw Kenobi task the spacer to find a shard and remove its influence in order to correct the imbalance and remove the dark side's influence on the planet. The spacer located it and attempted to return it to it's chamber but had to confront the Dark Jedi Vartonis and his hired Brotherhood Mortalis members. The spacer eliminated them and succeeded in correcting the imbalance for Kenobi.

Prelude

"The Jedi on Mustafar uncovered a magnificent crystal of unknown origin. It was as tall as a tower, and the Jedi quickly discovered that it was attuned to the Force within them. [...] As the crystal exploded, he managed to shield himself from some of the destruction. Clinging onto life, he found a large shard of the crystal in front of the dead masters. [...] He spent his remaining energy using the Force to put a protective shield around it, to make sure that no other Force wielder could sense its presence. Unfortunately, Krow, dying from his injuries, wasn't as strong as he had once been, and the power of his shield has diminished after several thousand years."
―Obi-Wan Kenobi[6]

Millennia before the Galactic Civil War, the Jedi Order had a chapter on the planet Mustafar.[6] During the Great Sith War,[8] the Jedi uncovered a large Force crystal, tall as a building. The Jedi learnt that it attuned to the Force within them individually. However, news of an impending Sith invasion prompted them to experiment on the crystal, hoping that it could help defend the chapter.[6]

During the battle, in 3996 BBY,[8] the Jedi channeled their powers through the crystal and strengthened their abilities, while significantly diminishing those of the Sith. However, while this worked at first, the crystal slowly began cracking as the power within it was being pushed to the limits. The crystal exploded and sent the planet out of orbit, while it killed all Jedi and Sith save for the remaining elder Jedi Master Erg Krow. As the crystal exploded, he managed to shield himself from some of the ensuing destruction, and though injured, found a large shard of the crystal still remained relatively intact. Krow went into hiding with the shard, spending the last ounces of power he had left to use the Force to put a protective shield around it to make sure that other Force-sensitive's could not sense its presence. Krow succumbed to his injuries shortly after.[6]

Over time, the shield put in place by Master Krow around the shard gradually diminished. After a few millennia, the shield finally vanished during the Galactic Civil War.[6] The power of the crystal shard caused a major disturbance in the Force that empowered the dark side on the surface of Mustafar.[6][9] Around the time of the Battle of Yavin, the power of the crystal drew darksiders to Mustafar, including the Dark Jedi Vartonis who hired the Brotherhood Mortalis to aid him in securing the shard so he could intensify his power in the dark side of the Force.[6]

The mission

"In my state, I can't, which is why I need you. I wish it were as easy as us just going there right now and getting it, but there are some problems. Even though the shielding is all but gone, Krow made sure that it wouldn't be easy to gain access. He made the entrance only passable by someone with great Force powers and since you don't have that, we have to cheat. [...] There's a shard of the crystal that has an unusually active soul of a Jedi trapped inside it. I'm fairly certain that we can use that shard as a key to gain entrance to Krow's chamber."

In 1 ABY,[7] Vartonis was dangerously close to found the shard of the broken Force crystal.[6] Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi visited Mustafar as a spirit to investigate how to eliminate the evil presence on Mustafar and correct the imbalance that existed.[6][9] He approached a group of adventurers and secured their assistance since he himself was unable to do so. He warned the spacers that the dark side was growing in strength and that failing to correct the imbalance would further empower the dark side more than it already was.[6]

Kenobi told the spacers that a small shard that remained from the crystal had the active soul of Jedi imprisoned within it; he was certain that this shard could be used to gain entry into the chamber containing the largest crystal shard. Kenobi asked the spacers that the small shard be recovered so that the crystal could be destroyed, so as to prevent the dark siders from claiming it as their own.[6]

The spacers found the shard in the possession of a crazed Mustafarian hermit, and the fact that his movements were erratic made it difficult for even Kenobi to locate him through the Force. The Jedi soul in the shard, according to Kenobi, was in great pain and he mused that the spirit may have been what gradually drove the hermit insane. While the spacers merely wanted the shard, the hermit grew hostile, and was killed in the ensuing confrontation. While Kenobi expressed regret at the hermit's death, the spacers was adamant that it was an unavoidable confrontation, which Kenobi conceded.[6]

The adventurers later visited several ruins of the old Jedi enclave — the northern and the southern Jedi Ruins in the Smoking Forest, the eastern Jedi Ruins in the Berken's Flow — while carrying the hermit's shard and eventually managed to locate the Lair of the Crystal.[6]

The duel

"So you defeated those worthless mercs. Very well. I will destroy you myself! Your pathetic powers are no match for me!"
"Beware, this Dark Jedi's power is significant. Although I had hoped to avoid it, you have no choice but to use the power of the crystal to be able to defeat him..."
"Hahaha! You're no match for the power of the dark side! I will crush you! Your ashen shadow on the ground is the last mark you will leave on this world!"
―Lord Vartonis and Obi-Wan Kenobi[6]

Kenobi sent the spacer ahead to locate it while he used his abilities to delay the dark siders who were hunting the crystal down. The chamber containing the evil crystal shard was located beneath the Temple Ruins, in the north of the continent in a place called the Burning Plains. When the spacer arrived, Kenobi's spirit returned. Inside the inner chamber, Vartonis and the Brotherhood Mortalis members arrived, hoping to lay claim to the crystal shard.[6]

The spacers first fought the mercenaries, successfully defeating them. They then confronted Lord Vartonis but the Dark Jedi was too powerful for them. Guided by Kenobi, the adventurers accepted to use the power of the crystal to fight the Dark Jedi. The shard soon increased the abilities of the adventurers who were able to defeat and kill Vartonis. Then, following the advice of Obi-Wan's spirit and despite the temptation to keep the Force crystal for themselves, they destroyed the shard once for all.[6]

Aftermath

"You are everything I expected and more. I understand the struggle that you had to overcome to destroy the crystal my friend and I'm grateful that you made the right choice."
―Obi-Wan Kenobi, to one of his followers[6]

The spacer's actions helped to correct the imbalance on Mustafar by destroying the shard and thereby ridding its influence on the planet for good; Kenobi expressed his gratitude to the spacer before departing.[6]

  7. 7.0 7.1 The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
