- "The Rebels are moving a sizeable fleet in to this system. Their objective is to liberate the planet of the Trandoshans and our presence. We will of course stop their futile attempt."
- ―Darth Vader, to an Imperial pilot
A failed Rebel Invasion of Kashyyyk took place in 1 ABY, during the Galactic Civil War. An Imperial starfighter force led by Darth Vader prevented Rebel Alliance troops to land on Kashyyyk and liberate the planet
Prelude
- "To ensure that the pilots understand your supremacy, I'm providing you with my old star fighter. This weapon of destruction should instill fear and respect in both friend and foe."
- ―Darth Vader, to an Imperial pilot
In 1 ABY,[5] the Rebel Alliance assembled a fleet and troops in order to invade and liberate the Wookiee world of Kashyyyk from the Galactic Empire and Trandoshan slavers. However, unfortunately for the Alliance, the Empire discovered the plan right before the invasion started. Darth Vader, who was present on Kashyyyk at that moment, therefore gathered Imperial starfighters and pilots to ambush the Rebel fleet. Vader did not participate in the battle himself but he provided his own Eta-2 Actis-class interceptor to an Imperial ace pilot who previously served under Admiral Krieg.[4]
The battle
- "I will entrust you with leading our fleet to victory against the Rebels. Failure is not an option."
- ―Darth Vader, to an Imperial pilot
Although Imperial pilots had barely the time to take off and met in the Kashyyyk system, they were ready to fight when the Alliance starfighter jumped out hyperspace. A squadron of X-wing starfighters first arrived in the system. The surprise was total for the Rebel pilots who expected to attack Kashyyyk by surprise. In the ensuring battle, the Alliance suffered heavy casualties, particularly from the Imperial ace who piloted Vader's interceptor.[6]
Rebel troop transports and support ships later arrived in the system, but they were soon joined by a group of Imperial TIE bombers. Due to the loss of most X-wings in the first stage of the battle, the Alliance starships were completely vulnerable to Imperial fighters and bombers. All the Rebel troops were killed in their transports before they could even approach the planet Kashyyyk. The battle ended when the remaining Alliance ships were destroyed.[7]
Aftermath
- "Good, my faith in your abilities proved right."
- ―Darth Vader, to an Imperial pilot
The destruction of the Rebel invasion force in space totally abolished any hope to liberate the world of Kashyyyk in the short-term.[7] The Wookiee planet would only be freed three years later by the New Republic, after the Battle of Endor.[8]

- ↑ 5.0 5.1 The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
