"An army of droids travels this way, and early reports say that they intend to leave no survivors."
Foreman Koseyet[6]

The Battle of Koseyet occurred on Mustafar during the Galactic Civil War. HK-47 and his droid army attempted to wipe out the Koseyet Mining Camp, as part of HK-47's personal mission to seek revenge on all organic "meatbags" for their part in the events that caused him to lose his original body. When HK-47 attacked the mining camp, he was eventually repelled by a group of spacers, who destroyed his droids and drove him away from the Mensix Mining facility.

Prelude

"That is great! Just great! Not only do we have to worry about the Empire, we also need to worry about an army of robots coming and killing us all. Listen, you have to fix this. You have to stop that army of droids. We are miners, not soldiers. You are our only hope."
Milo Mensix, to a spacer[6]

Some time during the Old Republic era, a Hammerhead-class cruiser crashed on the planet Mustafar.[7] One of the cruiser's passengers was HK-47,[6] an assassin droid that served the Sith Lord Darth Revan during the Jedi Civil War.[8] Centuries later, during the Clone Wars, Separatists discovered the wreck of the cruiser.[9] They excavated the wreckage[10] and discovered HK-47. When the Separatist engineers realized that the droid's technology was superior than anything they knew, they reactivated HK-47. However, the droid was too dangerous and the engineers were forced to transfer his memory and thought patterns into a sub-system of the crashed cruiser. Trade Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray later ordered the construction of a droid factory on Mustafar in order to produce an army of battle droids based on HK-47's technology. Unfortunately for the Separatists, the construction of the droid factory was only achieved in the last days of the Clone Wars and the new battle droid models were never deployed. In the meantime, HK-47 remained conscious but stuck in the ruined system of the wrecked Old Republic cruiser.[6]

Two decades later, during the Galactic Civil War, a group of spacers working for Mensix Corp explored the wreckage of the Old Republic cruiser when they discovered the artificial intelligence of a droid trapped in a computer.[11] HK-47 tricked the spacers into helping him to escape the ship's computer. The spacers accepted and followed HK-47's instructions to transfer his AI to the old Separatist droid factory.[12] However, they soon realized that they inadvertently allowed HK-47 to reactivate the factory and take control of a large droid army. Furious at having been stuck in a wreck for so long, the assassin droid wanted to take revenge by destroying all organics on the planet. His main target was the Mensix Mining facility, the largest facility of the continent. As the Koseyet Mining Camp stood in the way of the droid army's invasion route to the Mensix Mining Facility, Milo Mensix decided to organize the defense there.[6]

The battle

"Some of my men have remained behind to assist you in defending this area. Make use of them as you will. It is not just our lives, but the lives of many, that depend on you today."
―Foreman Koseyet, to a spacer[6]

HK-47's army consisted mostly of HK-77 droids as well as AK-1A "Hammer", AK-3 "Reaper" and GK-5 sentry droids, which HK-47 either recruited to his side or built himself.[6]

The spacers arrived at the Koseyet Mining Camp before the droid army and began to prepare for the battle to come. Mensix Corp had limited defensive capabilities but managed to deploy shield generators around the camp to prevent the droids to continue their progression to the Mensix Mining Facility. The secondary objective was to keep the camp intact. The miners were not well trained or armed, but they were willing to fight to defend Koseyet. A spacer used this to his advantage, and ordered the miners to defend key points. Another spacer, most likely a commando, had the opportunity to place explosives around the camp. With barely enough time to strategically set up the miners and charges, the first waves of HK47's army fired upon the camp.[6]

With the battle now underway, all the men fought bravely to defend Koseyet. Many miners died at the blasters of HK47's newer droids. Over 100 HK-77's were destroyed, along with many of the AK-3's, GK-5's, and AK-1A's. Near the end of the conflict, an improved HK-77 droid known as the Forward Commander entered the fray. He was by far the deadliest droid on the battlefield, possessing the ability to command other troops and his own personal escort. With the remaining miners and spacers focusing their fire on him, the Forward Commander was obliterated. This one act gave the rest of the survivors a huge moral boost. The remaining men charged fearlessly with boosted egos and easily wiped out the few remaining droids.[6]

"You have done masterfully. The droid army is a wrecked heap across the landscape."
―Foreman Koseyet, to a spacer[6]

The Battle of Koseyet was a victory, but HK-47 was far from stopped. The surviving spacers left the camp and raided HK-47's droid factory in a hope to end the conflict. They successfully disabled the facility.[6] Eventually, HK-47 and the remnants of his army were defeated in an epic battle in a volcano crater.[4]

Behind the scenes

The Battle of Koseyet appeared in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[6] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[13] The Battle of Koseyet was added to the game with the release of the expansion pack Trials of Obi-Wan on November 1, 2005.[6]

  5. The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
