Messert was a planet[4] located in the Messert system[3] within the Mytaranor sector of the Mid Rim[1] and the Slice.[2] It was situated in grid square Q-10 of the Standard Galactic Grid.[1]
Messert was the homeworld of the human stunt pilot Seftin Vanik. Messert was part of the New Republic,[4] which was formally established in 5 ABY,[5] but eventually seceded from the Republic. Messert's secession stunned Vanik, as the pilot supported the galactic government. Sometime after the secession,[3] by 35 ABY,[6] Vanik accepted an invitation to join the Resistance by pilot Poe Dameron.[3]
Behind the scenes
Messert was first indirectly mentioned in the current Star Wars canon in Pablo Hidalgo's 2019 reference book Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary.[7] It was identified as "Messert" in the 2021 reference book Star Wars: Character Encyclopedia, Updated and Expanded Edition.[3] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, Messert was first mentioned in the 1991 West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game sourcebook Planets of the Galaxy, Volume One in the name of the Messert Mines Corporation.[8] It was later identified as a celestial body in the 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas, written by Daniel Wallace and Jason Fry.[9]
