- "Alert! Vergesso asteroid field charts are out of date, and traveling in Lybeya system is considered a Class Three navigation hazard. The system is surveyed, and found to contain no valuable assets."
- ―Lybeya system datafile
The Lybeya system of Bajic sector was home to five sets of asteroid belts, known as the Vergesso Asteroids.
History
During the primeval formation of the system, some external force, such as the gravitational influence of some other star, disrupted the system's planetary aggregation. As a result, no planetary bodies remained in the system, only five belts of thousands to trillions asteroids and smaller particles, and only a handful of moon-sized planetoids.[3]
The system was first discovered some centuries before the Galactic Civil War by a scout droid. The astrographical location of the system, plus the unworthiness of the asteroids in minerals, made it inconvenient for any colonial, corporate, commercial or strategic/military interest. Around 150 years before the Battle of Yavin, the curious nature of the asteroid-only system attracted the interest of planetologist Dr. Ecile Vergesso. She came to the the largest planetoid in the third belt, and made a survey base to explore the system. Her research earned her tenure, and the asteroids were named after her.[3]
Despite, and because of its lack of value, and its remote location, the system attracted criminal activities. Vergesso's installation, was used by pirates, smugglers, and a shadowport for Ororo, a legal front for Tenloss Syndicate that operated in Bajic and surrounding sectors. Known as the Vergesso Base, it remained the only sentient presence in the system, and the only source of traffic, until it was destroyed in the Battle of the Bajic Shipyards.[3]
