The Kira system was located in the Kira sector[3] of the Expansion Region[1] and the Trailing Sectors,[2] in grid square N-16 of the Standard Galactic Grid. Hyperspace routes linked it to the Bacrana, Kalinda, Pax, and Wroona systems.[1] In 34 ABY,[4] several screens aboard Chandrila Star Line's Star Cruiser Halcyon displayed a partial map of the galaxy that indicated the Kira system's position.[5]

Behind the scenes

The Kira system was first depicted in the current Star Wars canon on a galactic map in Star Wars: The Force Awakens Beginner Game, a 2016 Fantasy Flight Games' roleplaying game boxed set.[1] Kira's first in-universe appearance came in the form of being depicted on a map viewable in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, an immersive two-day roleplaying experience at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida[5] that opened to the public on March 1, 2022[6] and was launched for the final time on September 28, 2023.[7] It was then identified by name in "Star Systems of the Galaxy," an appendix published with the Star Wars Galaxy Map article on StarWars.com[3] on June 24, 2025. Both works were authored by Jason Fry.[8]

The Kira system was originally introduced in the Star Wars Legends continuity via the 1993 book Twin Stars of Kira, a supplement for West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game. In the book, the section describing the star system was written by Stephen Crane, with John Paul Lona providing an illustration of the system.[9] The Clone Wars: Act on Instinct, a webcomic authored by Pablo Hidalgo and released on StarWars.com[10] over the span of the 2009[11]2010[12] second season of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series,[11] featured the first appearance of the Kira system.[10]
