Plot summary
Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi went to the planet of Telos on an unofficial mission to apprehend Xanatos, the Dark Jedi who had tried to destroy the Jedi Temple. Upon their arrival, they were surprised to find that Xanatos wielded significant financial and political power on Telos. They soon discovered that Xanatos and the government of Telos had been distracting the populace with a new form of gambling called Katharsis. In the meantime, the company UniFy, a subsidiary of the massive Offworld Corporation headed by Xanatos, had been mining the planet's resources despite the importance the native Telosians place on their environment.
Pursued by Xanatos' men, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon were forced to trust a man called Den, a con man associated with POWER, an outlawed political party dedicated to preserving the Telosian environment. The three infiltrated the UniFy headquarters, looking for evidence to prove that Offworld was mishandling the planet's resources. However, the two Jedi were arrested and Xanatos personally informed them they had been sentenced to death. The Jedi managed to escape the public execution with the help of Andra, a member of the POWER party.
Obi-Wan and Andra infiltrated the Sacred Pools of Telos and discovered that the site was indeed being used for mining operations. The two were detected by surveillance droids, but were able to escape and record evidence that Offworld was connected with UniFy. Meanwhile, Den and Qui-Gon rigged the Katharsis lottery so that Den would win. When Den did win, Xanatos presented the prize to him, and the recorded images were played for all the Telosians to see. However, Xanatos deceived the crowd and the Jedi were captured once more. But Den, addressing the crowd, told the people how the lottery was rigged and how the Telosians were robbed of their money. Xanatos then made his get–away, but Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan were able to chase him back to the Sacred Pools. After a lightsaber battle amid the black acid pools, the two Jedi finally cornered the Dark Jedi. But Xanatos, not willing to be defeated, committed suicide by throwing himself into the acid pools.
Continuity
The first eight books of the Jedi Apprentice series told a continuous tale, with the events of one book flowing directly into those of the next, spanning about four months. A break of several months occurred between this story and the next, during which Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon were said to have visited other worlds.[1]
